I am someone who is admittedly unfamiliar with leather and kink as a whole, much less the history of it. This museum, which might be seen as salacious to those who have never been exposed to this kind of material, is very informative and doesn't attempt to sanitize the realities (and conceptualized fictions) of the mainly queer participants of the leather/BDSM community. Even though it's a smaller museum, there's so much to see. They also have a library, but I can't really comment on that because I didn't have time to see it before I left. The staff at the front entrance was friendly and they have self-service lockers for your bags. I would definitely come back, and I probably will.

This was a very unique and interesting museum. It had a really diverse collection of leather items, predominantly connected to leather daddies and other kink communities. There was an interesting exhibit on the pup community, the role of women and sex workers in leather culture, classic leather vests, and more. The library was also very impressive. It was a really cool place! They do have lockers they require you to store large bags in and they have a small gift shop too. Normally I believe there's a cost but when we went, it was free that day! Friendly staff and not too many people on a Thursday. I've seen most of the museums in Chicago but this was new and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone interested in leather community history or looking for a unique museum off the beaten path. Many cute places nearby after if you're wanting to shop or eat after too.

It's awesome a museum like this exists--I would recommend about an hour for it, unless you have an appointment for the archives or want to spend a lot of time in the library. A wide range of items with loving local history; I wish some of the descriptions for items gave more background, or that there was more of a curatorial narrative throughout the space, but it's clearly done thoughtfully. Happy to have gone!

The Leather Archives and Museum is a unique and interesting museum located in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago. I've been 3 times over the last 8 years and I've been impressed by the collection every time. The museum is definitely geared towards open minded adults. Some of the information and items profiled inside the museum seem to always stay, while other sections seem to be temporary/rotating exhibits. I'm always amazed at how much they fit into this relatively small museum. I always leave away learning so much. If you happen to have some free time on a Thursday, the museum is free to the public on this day of the week.

I am in total shock that I didn't know this was here. From the notes I took, since I had to be here for a class that I was in, I was so awestruck with everything. I was quite shocked that the leather museum had an exhibit on Bettie Page, the Queen of Pin up! This was an honor to see and to read all about the whole leather movement. All the pieces that are located inside are just wonderful with history, and you can see the care that went into this museum. I also like the fact that there is an actually library within the walls, Of course you cannot check books out, due to the age of many of them, but the fact that you can actually use them there and get awesome information is really a nice thing. During our visit there the head Manager gave us the tour and was really pleasent as well as knowledgable about the whole movement, for this I can appreciate the fact that I gave a 5 star beause I love when someone working there can actually give you facts. If you are not into this kind of movement, then this is not for you. After all you will see naked bodies all over in the art that is displayed and that may not be the best thing for everyone, the graphics are amazing but to me its art. Check them out as least once before making judgement, its not a bad museum in the least, but it is really graphic and in the lower level you will find items that you thought were only for the S&M culture, get ready its something totally different but with an awesome history lesson.

This is easily one of the most important institutions devoted to the documentation of leather culture and history in the United States. Much of the Museum is devoted to the material culture of the leather community. You will find examples of uniforms, patches and pins used by current and historical clubs and organizations as well as early examples of toys and equipment used during play time. The Museum also has a collection of interviews with members of the leather community and an extensive library of books devoted to sex, sexuality and leather culture. The museum is a must for any leatherperson interested in examining our history.

This is an excellent presentation of the leather scene and associated kink (of which I admittedly know next to nothing about). They have an extensive library (you could spend hours there) and several floors of memorabilia, art and demonstrative pieces. So much to see!
