I saw "The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui" at the Trap Door earlier this year and it was one of the finest pieces of ensemble acting I've seen in Chicago. Trap Door is a hidden treasure of which you should not deprive yourself. Like all good storefront theater, the stage is tiny, the seating limited, the experience intense. Plus, there can (will?) be wine.

Treefall! small and elegant theater! On Thursday night! Actors try their best to show how struggle the life should be without mom! They are yelling more but it's how they should perform. Very nice place. I like it!

Lipstick Lobotomy @ Trap Door Theatre, through 3-21-2020: Lipstick is worth seeing alone for the mouth masks, the 3 beautiful actresses Michaela Voit, Eleanor Katz & Bernadetta Zawiejska who contribute mightily with one? spoken word among them over 90 minutes (if that doesn't define love of the art & ensemble I don't know what does) & the great pink and sherbet vintage coats in an ever shifting pond of smart white spartan garb. Ann James can really belt out an American classic & was rock solid as Rose Kennedy, Lotspeich has a brilliant Irish brogue & vibrant physical presence, Sonneville, a kind of Judy Garland magic, & Blankenship once again absolutely nails a "Golden Age of Hollywood" contract actress tone & persona, also producing astonishingly good facial expressions (she's a master of frustration, fit & tantrum) throughout the piece as well as great movement on the jungle gym. Lines about Shirley Temple (& pornography?) are hilarious, almost as funny as the handsome Dennis Bisto bitterly exclaiming that he's lost an eye in a sporting match (to a girl in asylum care!) The John McEnroe era orange striped sweatbands were a really nice touch to Bisto's snaz blue suit. And it's always fun (& a bit strange) to experience actors hiding face & belly down on the floor at your feet. As per usual @ the Trap Door, every actor contributed nobly to a piece worth enjoying on at least two separate evenings from Traps' comfy chairs. Trap Trap Trap. THANKS. Forty five seats, people. Participate with gusto as you 45 are being counted on by all those hard working, UNPAID! actors. I saw The Beastly Bombing on Friday, it was funny and original. Oh, and we ate at Jane's before. Then we left through the front door, in the rain, to go to the entrance of Trap Door Theatre round the side. Only to arrive back inside Jane's. D'oh.

I saw the Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant at this avant-garde theater and it was great! The stage is tiny and only about 40 or so people fit in the theater in reclining-like chairs. The actors manned the little bar before the show; glasses of wine were at a suggested price of $4 and beer was $3. The performance was hilarious and well done. All of the Trap Door's performances come from original European literature. Tickets are 2 for 1 on Thursdays. It's also right next door to Jane's Restaurant, which is excellent, and across the street from a bar, which I can't remember name of.

If you've never been to Trap Door before, there is a good chance you are going to miss the entrance to the Trap Door. I made it here on a Friday night to see my buddies Amy Winehouse cover band in a variety show with a few other folk singers. They also had several burlesque dancers... aka "classier" strippers with some comedians in between acts . The place is small, only holding maybe 50 people. The stage is pretty tiny as well which means the performer is right in your face... which isn't always fun when the comedian likes to rip on the audience members. The venue probably would work better for some shows more than others. They do have a small bar for your drinking needs with cans of MGD and glasses of wine.

Trap Door Theatre is a small prize, hidden away in a pedestrian alley, which imports some of the more interesting of European theatre. I have been attending shows at Trap Door for several years, most recently the current "No Matter How Hard We Try," a recent Polish play communicating some of the emotional and cultural chaos which continues to survive the German occupation of WW II. This production, as with all Trap Door shows, is produced in their extremely small black-box space on Cortland just west of Ashland. Although the sets and lighting are typical for store-front Chicago theatres, it is the acting which never fails to amaze at Trap Door. In this production, I would especially advocate for Emily Nichelsen, who carried the first 2/3 of the play with her high-energy cynicism, Tiffany Bedwell as the bedraggled yet not defeated would-be anchor of this disfunctional family of survivors, and the always interesting Marzena Bukowska, whom I last saw in" Fairtytale Lives of Russian Girls" and was glad to be able to see her again. I would like to wrote a long analysis of this theatre and this play, but in my wish to spare you a lot of reading, let me just leave you with this: If you can't see this show, go by the theatre and see the next; you may be confused by the sideways approach of some of the European theatre they present, but I promise you will never be disappointed.

Wine from the bar is cheap and good! Served in a real wine glass though which makes for an awkward rest of the show when you are done. Hot when they close the curtain. The show we saw was meh but I'd like to try this company again.

My wife and I went to this theatre for the first time last Saturday. We saw "Naked" and were very impressed with the acting and overall production. It was a captivating and intriguing story. I would HIGHLY recommend seeing this play and supporting the theatre.

This theater is awesome! Came here to see "12 Ophelias" and loved it. I'd been before to see "No Darkness Round My Stone", and had a great experience with that show as well. I love the ambiance of this theater. It does definitely feel like a trap door, and it's a very intimate setting, which I think is great. They also get an extremely high caliber of actors in the company, so the shows are all really great. I'll definitely continue to see productions there!
