Cute concept. Funky interior. Amazing sushi. Those are three phrases that describe Umi Sushi. When I heard a new, pick your own sushi spot opened I knew I wanted to try it. And boy did it deliver. The price is based on the weight. I paid $8 for mine. There is a good selection - both raw and cooked. The flavors from what I picked were all so tasty. They have free sauces, one of which was a spicy mayo, that was just amazing. This may be my new go-to spot when I am craving some sushi! I highly recommend it.

If you are craving for suishi and something quick, this is the place! Self-serve and pay by weight. Good selections of rolls and a smaller selection of nigiri, but all the basic kinds are available. In case you don't see what you want, just ask (I asked about unagi nigiri and they made a fresh tray). Inside the place, it has about 10 along-the-window bar seats. Cups of water is available for free. It is a clean, simple atmosphere! I will definitely be back!

On a relatively short layover in downtown Chicago I was Jonesing for sushi. The idea of getting exactly what I wanted, bite by bite, and paying by weight intrigued me. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of sushi from this self-serve buffet-style restaurant. The rules were sitting out and after grabbing a set of tongs and a container I was able to pick exactly how many pieces of exactly which type of sushi I wanted. One piece of this, three pieces of that... The gentleman behind the counter was cheerful and answered my questions. The seating options are slim with just a couple of stools along the window bar. I was delighted to have eaten until I was full (6 pieces) for less than $10! If you're craving melt in your mouth, mind blowing sushi, this is not your place. But if you're looking for a decent meal at a good price you should check it out.

Cute little place. Not too much seating but they also have to go containers. Great place to get sushi quick and try lots of things. Nice variety. You grab a container/tray and a pair of tongs and get what you want. You pay by the weight and I had a full tray and was able to try so many things for a reasonable price. Friendly service.

This place is cool. Not the highest grade sushi but this place ain't for that. This isn't omikase. What it is is sushi done right for modern day. You can go in, pick exactly what sushi you want with your own set of tongs and container. You are responsible for your order. In and out. It's super easy, quick and they even give student discounts for all the students in the surrounding schools. I got 5 pieces of salmon sushi for $8!

I come here once a week they're so good! This is a perfect place for college students and workers on the go, offering fast service, amazing prices, and great quality. I love that it is by weight and grab and go style. They offer good students discounts and it is always just so easy to get in and out. I am a student who works a lot so I don't often have time to get my lunch in between jobs. I love that I can always count on this being a quick and stomach fulfilling trip and not to mention it being right by the train station!

Unique concept where you choose different types of sushi/rolls and pay by weight. My friend and I each picked up a tray and we were able to try a variety of different flavors. The fish is quite fresh and they had some unique rolls. The service is friendly and quick. The interior is clean. There are some spots if you choose to dine in, but we just brought it to go to picnic at Millenium Park.

You mix and match your sushi, take as little or as much as you please. There's a lot to choose from, something for everyone! The sushi is constantly being restocked so it's always fresh and delicious. Umi Sushi is open Monday thru Saturday from 10:30 am to8 pm and Sundays 11 am to 7 pm.

Amazing value! Every piece of sushi was packed with flavor and had a nice, satisfying bite -- you can tell they don't skimp on quality or portion. Our favorite was the smoked salmon nigiri; it was silky, perfectly seasoned, and just melted in your mouth. Honestly, though, everything we tried was excellent. Fresh, well-balanced, and beautifully presented. Definitely a spot we'll keep coming back to!

I have finally made it downtown and was able to visit Umi Sushi. I brought my 2 kids with me and we filled up a tray's worth and came to ~$18. We demolished the tray and got another one for the same price - this time trying new items. They have a loyalty card and each pound is a stamp. This trip we earned 2 stamps. The sushi is great for lunch and the variety is appreciated. They turnover pretty quickly as there is a steady stream of people coming in and out. Not gourmet sushi, but much better than what I would pick up at the grocery store. We will definitely be back when in the area!
