The Arkham is the new home of the Underground Theater Company. The location is very convenient as it is located on a major bus route (22 Clark Street) or in walking distance from the Red Line (Wilson). The new venue is located in what use to be a hipster furniture store and I must say that they have revamped the space well to look like a theater. The space is small, but intimate. It is a winning combination as you have live theater and it's BYOB. There are plenty of restaurants in the area if you wanted to have dinner first and then catch a show. Seating is tight but comfortable. However if someone is a little on the larger size, they could possibly end up taking up a second seat, which is what happened last night: three people in four seats. This meant that a paid seat was unavailable. But I was very happy to see that the staff did not panic or make a scene, they simply retrieved another chair for the person and placed it in the front row. We went to see Carrie 2: The Rage (An Unauthorized Musical Parody). I myself had never seen Carrie 2 the movie as I didn't see the point of it. So I was curious as to what a musical story about Carrie 2 would look like. I also figured it would give me an idea of what the movie was about. I have to say that the music and book for Carrie 2 was hilarious. The production staging was parse, but it worked. The songs were catchy and funny and David Kaplinksky as the Greek chorus (of sorts) was crazy funny. The cast overall was amazing, but my favorites were Sue Snell (Britain Gebhardt) and Annie Pfohl (Barbara Lang, Carrie 2's mom). Both of these ladies were over the top, but in a grand and glorious way. The rest of the cast were just as funny and brilliant. All in all it was a very good evening. I am hoping that this place is successful as I want to be able to walk down the street and see some original musicals :-)

I recently saw Wife Material and was impressed with the production value and music direction. Having just moved to the area, I'm on the hunt for good local theaters producing new works and judging by the show posters on the wall, it seems like Underscore is just the kind of place I like to patronize. I understand the theatre company is currently seeking a new Artistic Director, so I am interested to see what direction the new blood takes things. On the operations side of things, might I suggest some bathroom improvements?
