Overall the hotel is fine. The historic building is charming and the location in Chicago is great. However, did they consult any women when designing the bathrooms? Tiny counter space or shelving for your bathroom items and just a rain shower (some of us do not want to get our hair wet). The room we stayed in was not conducive for 2 travelers with luggage. Very little space for our things and trying to move around the bed. What’s with the giant pommel horse at the foot of the bed? It just gets in the way and serves no function that I could see. At the end of our stay, I was waiting for friends in the Drawing Room, and leaned back on one of the couches with a few shopping bags. I must’ve dozed off because I was rudely awakened by a staff member who said people aren’t allowed to sleep in the lobby. I explained that I was a guest in the hotel and she said I had to go up to my room if I wanted to sleep. I was just resting my eyes. What a rude interaction! It really colored the end of the stay and if this is the attitude of some of the staff, you better do some retraining. It’s not like I was some homeless person off the street. Do better with your guests taking a little time to relax.

I. Love. This. Hotel.

No doubt, the absolute star of this show is the building itself. RESPECT to whoever oversaw the renovation and transformation from athletic club to hotel. I have to admit I was bracing myself for another bad “modernization”, but whoever did this one saw the (increasingly) rare beauty and incredible SUBSTANCE of this building, and did a truly masterful job maintaining that old-world elegance and luxury of workmanship and materials, while creating a hotel that works in the modern world. Truly impressive. Good job, whoever you are!

Equally impressive has been absolutely EVERY interaction with everyone who works here. That’s sadly not something that can often be said anywhere, anymore, but I would come back just for the service.

I had a Founders room, and I can only say wow. Wow. I mean… Wow. That’s an epic room.

The location is great: across from the park and the lake, and an easy walk to the blue line and O’hare.

Breakfast was delicious (service was lovely). Drinks in the lobby by the fire… amazing. The deck off the bar upstairs with a view of the lake would be AMAZING if it wasn’t snowing :-D

And pool tables!

This was a great stay.   Very relaxing.  The reason I am posting this review is because I left something at the hotel of huge sentimental value to me in our room.  They found it and mailed it back.  They kept the communication open and were instrumental in it being returned.  I know they did not have to take it as seriously as they did, especially right before Christmas, everyone is a little crazy at that time!  However, they did! And I will be forever grateful!   The building is beautiful, location great, but the real gem of this hotel is the Staff!

Very nice hotel situated beautifully next to Millennium Park. Great architecture, wonderful rooftop terrace and friendly staff. Bathrooms were very clean and the rooms felt comfortable.

Drawbacks are that the Game room and the seats around the reception are always (at least during our stay of 6 nights) occupied by people not staying the hotel. Especially the game room is booked out to externals and the seats around the fireplace and the lobby are taken up by external people working/ studying. This is a real shame as we would have liked to have had a go at some of the games on over.

Also our heating first didn’t work as wanted so our room was very cold during the first night. The maintenance guys were very quick to fix it but then we ended up with constant heating on. After returning from a visit to the nearby museum we found our room to be at a toasty 97F/ 36C. Luckily the guy from maintenance was quick to fix it a second time.
Also the room Telephones are not working (at least for external calls, which I needed due to only having a European phone during my stay).

All these thing are not major issues individually (so still 4 stars from us) but add up and in the price range this hotel is in it would have been nice if things were a little different - at least for us.

Fantastic place to get a free game of pool in with a couple of beers and some good pub food. We actually spent two afternoons here playing pool and shuffleboard and enjoying Chicago old style beer with a hamburger and fantastic fries cooked.  Service was very good. They were attentive without being all over you right around the corner from the Palmer Hotel and I would recommend a great few afternoons just enjoying some games here at the Athletic Association.
