Well located and fairly priced hostel. Cheap in comparison to nearby hotels, but kind of pricey when it comes to hostels. The rooms were nice and we stayed in one that had a bathroom for the four beds to share. Definitely quiet despite the number of people that seemed to be staying there.

There's a really nice bar/restaurant in the back. Great ambiance and one of the bartenders was really nice. Small selection of bar food and cool drinks, but the drinks are expensive.

Location GREAT. Price seemed to be affordable but not a roach motel price, well that was till we were in the room for more than 30 minutes.

Heater did not work, after talking to the front desk twice a $10 electric space heater was sent up to our room. Water was just hot enough to shower but it was just enough to do a quick shower and get out.

Hotel also thinks using the lobby as an event space is a good idea when you can hear the event in the first few floors of rooms. There was a 20 some birthday party going this Saturday till 1030 pm, so no sleeping for us!

Lastly I know the building is old but the constant smell of sewage seeping up from the basement was a bit too much.

Spend the extra $100 a night and go elsewhere.

This place is great if you don't feel like shelling out big bucks on a hotel room.  The staff was super friendly and very accommodating. I never stayed in a hostel before, and I was a bit nervous about having to share a room. I am glad I chose Freehand. I got to meet some really cool people in the room. My roommates were very  courteous, and I got a great night's sleep. The bathroom was clean with great hot water.  The location is very good also. There are plenty of eating and shopping options In walking distance.

What a delightful place. Next time to Chicago we will certainly stay here. Small hotel with personal very friendly service. Rooms are small but really cool. Lounge is very different from your big hotel, but very comfortable with a delightful character. The location is also great.  Lot's of excellent eateries close by. If you want someplace more cozy and laid back than a Hilton, this is the place to come. We loved it.

I stayed at this hotel in a great central location in Chicago, which was very convenient for exploring the city on a budget. The room was quite small, but decent enough for a short stay. While it appeared to be clean at first glance, upon closer inspection, there were some areas that could have been cleaner. My room only had a window facing the interior courtyard, which was not ideal as it was noisy and the courtyard itself was quite dirty.

On the positive side, the staff were very friendly and helpful throughout my stay. The hotel also offers useful amenities like an on-site bar, an ATM, and laundry facilities, which added convenience.

Overall, it's a decent choice if you're looking for a central location, but the room cleanliness and noise could definitely be improved.
