Il Porcellino – A Rare Gem in Chicago’s Italian Dining Scene

As someone who’s often left unimpressed by Chicago’s restaurant scene—where cost often overshadows quality, freshness, and portion size—Il Porcellino stands out as a true exception. It is one of the very few Italian restaurants in the city that gets all three elements right: exceptional food quality, genuine homemade freshness, and generous portions.

The dishes here reflect an authentic Italian spirit, with rich flavors that feel both elevated and comforting. From the pasta to the sauces, everything tastes thoughtfully crafted and made with care.

The ambiance is another highlight—warm, calming, and inviting. It’s the kind of place where you instantly relax, whether you're on a date night or having dinner with friends. The interior design complements the dining experience perfectly, making you want to linger a bit longer.

Service is equally outstanding. A special shoutout to Dan, whose professionalism and attention to detail made our experience even more memorable. His customer-focused approach truly elevated the evening.

Out of all the Italian spots I’ve tried in Chicago, Il Porcellino is one of only two I’d confidently give a 5-star rating based on my personal tastes. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a well-rounded, quality-driven Italian dining experience.

This place has some of the best Italian food in the city! The pasta is absolutely delicious and the chocolate cake is to die for. I was super surprised to see. They have a pretty nice happy hour menu as well! Parking is not easy, and it can get pretty crowded, but this place is definitely worth it.

Went Sunday night. Partner had the special short rib. His dish was 5 stars. My dish was chicken marsala. It had 4 tiny mushrooms on it and the mashed potatoes were cold. I sent the potatoes back (my chicken was hot). It took about 10 minutes to get another set of mashed potatoes with a piping hot plate but these potatoes were the same temperature and at this point I was done with my chicken. The waiter (Dan) did a excellent job and I didn't blame him...he tried. The garlic loaf was excellent and chocolate cake was rich, big and delicious. They did comp my meal and dessert so I would go back but probably order the lasagna (Dan did recommend that and I should of listened). So I give a 4.5 star for food and 5 for service. I would go back if in the area again.

This is a solid choice for straight forward Italian food in a city with many options. The atmosphere is inviting with bar seating for about 25. The dining area is inviting and the requisite Sinatra/Darin/Buble crooner tunes adds a nice touch without being too loud or over played.
The staff is welcoming and attentive. I got the Italian salad, but it was way over dressed. The bartender's suggestion of lasagna for the second course was a winner. It is likely in the top 5 of all lasagna I've ever had👍 Pricing was fair (not over priced) and the portions were large.

There are a number of pretentious Italian restaurants within walking distance. Unless that is your scene and authenticity is not important, this is a much better choice.

This is a lovely restaurant with friendly, courteous service and delicious food! Even the host at the front door was wonderful. While we waited in the bar, even though it was crowded, we were treated very well. The food, including the Burrata lasagna was wonderful. The calamari, cheese, bread, and garlic bread were also wonderful starters! I will definitely be back. The only reason the atmosphere got four stars was because it is a charming interior but very loud!

Detta var mitt tredje besök på denna fantastiska Italienska restaurang. Maten är fantastisk och Servicen har alltid varit förstklassig. Detta besök provade vi korv och paprika förrätt och det var utsökt! Bad om lite marinara vid sidan om och det gav lite extra smak! Jag åt ORECCHIETTE-pastan och den var fantastisk. Vi åt även vodkapastan och den hade fantastisk smak!

Om du gillar en lugn atmosfär, skulle vi råda att gå tidigt eftersom det var mycket upptagen när vi gick men maten var stor, Servicen var snabb och priset var okej.

Maten är helt utsökt, massor av alternativ som vi kämpade för att fatta ett beslut. Vinet är helt fantastiskt. Vi är här för en affärsresa och jag är glad att vi inte har en av dessa platser i vår hemstad annars skulle jag vara i trubbel.

Hade en underbar middag på Il Porcellino. Vi satt högst upp nära baren. Det var ett fint mysigt hörnbord. Vi började med grillbläckfisken. Underbart! Den kryddiga scampin hade en bra kick och sido stor sallad var gott att dela för bordet. Köttbullsförrätterna var också utmärkta!

Utmärkt atmosfär, underbar inredning i den gamla stilen av bilder av kända italienare och andra på väggen och framför allt utmärkt mat.

Jag hade ostraviolin med bolognesesås ovanpå. Ostraviolin var fräsch och fantastisk, och bolognesen var något av det bästa jag någonsin ätit. Åt där flera gånger under min resa. Se bara till att boka bord. De bokar snabbt.

Restaurangen i sig är mycket cool, och hade en stor vibe. Vi beställde ftied calamari till förrätt och det var väldigt fräscht och gott. Vi delade sedan spagetti och köttbullar, vilket också var mycket gott, men det var inte varmt alls. Men återigen smaken var bra. Cocktails var också bra. De gör bot serverar gratis bröd, vilket var något av en besvikelse, men vi hade massor att äta och var nöjda.

Rolig känsla men genomsnittlig pasta. Alla våra måltider var överkokta och pasta lite på den blöta sidan. Servicen var bra. Vinlistan var begränsad och för dyr.

Denna plats var fantastisk för en fest men också avslappnad. Allt var utsökt! Lasagnen och chokladen var fantastisk! Jag skulle besöka Chicago igen för att äta här! Det var mycket packat så kan ta lite tid med service men väl värt att vänta!

Olycklig upplevelse. Dottern gick på middag med vänner. Tre unga män kom in från gatan och gick förbi personal och började tilltala och verbalt misshandlade kunder inklusive min dotter. Välte dotterns drinkar och mat. Servitrisen och chefen tittade precis på. Ingen hjälp erbjuds. Män lämnade så småningom och personal aldrig gick in eller tog itu med händelsen. Så småningom erbjöd sig att ta aptitretaren från räkningen. Detta skulle inte ha hänt för tio år sedan. Floden North är inte säker på natten. Ingen tar ställning. Sorgligt och frustrerande.

Enastående hemlagad pasta. Fantastisk atmosfär. Välkryddade rätter och fantastiska dessertalternativ. Massor av restauranger i området. Perfekt för familj eller affärsmiddagar.

Denna charmiga plats serverar tröstande italienska - amerikanska klassiker som slår på plats. Vi provade den husgjorda pastan, som verkligen var exceptionell, och grönsaksantipastin var fräsch och smakrik. Även om matsalen var stängd, pickup service var smidig och effektiv. Den avslappnade atmosfären gjorde det perfekt för ett par utekvällar. Vi kan inte vänta med att återvända och utforska mer av deras säsongserbjudanden!

Il Porcellino ligger i centrum nära Chicagofloden. Det ser modernt ut från utsidan med spridda uteservering. Från gatan kan du se den stora baren med matsalen på baksidan. 

OK, denna plats är ganska turistigt men att vara downtown och omgiven av hotell, så det bör vara turistiskt. Vi hade reservation eftersom vi skulle se en pjäs i närheten. 

Insidan är mycket upptagen med massor av italiensk tema inredning, tänka stora vinflaskor från taket, och ostig italiensk 50-talet och 60-talet popmusik i bakgrunden. 

Menyn är ganska grundläggande italiensk mat. Men vi älskar italiensk mat och kunde inte vänta med att prova allt. 

Vi hade en flaska vin att starta och dela burrata förrätten. Jag beställde Ravioli med Pesto, min vän hade Kyckling Vesuvio och min partner beställde Pappardelle alla Porcellino. Vi hade lite bröd också men vi borde ha beställt vitlöksbrödet, alla andra verkar ha beställt det. 

Maten var mycket bra. Min ravioli var fint kryddad med pesto och både min partner och vän älskade båda sina rätter. 

Totalt sett bra service, bra mat, ostig atmosfär och musik men kul tid. Vi återkommer.

Utsökt mat, bra service, mysig atmosfär med fin belysning och musik. Vi har varit här två gånger och älskade allt. Vår mat var alla läckra inklusive de smaskiga desserter. Definitivt en eventmiddag där du tar dig tid och njuter av maten, stämningen och det goda sällskapet.

Restaurangen var mycket upptagen när vi gick och borden är lite trångt tillsammans, men den övergripande upplevelsen var utmärkt. Köttbullarna är fantastiska - stora men extremt mört, och jag skulle starkt rekommendera. 

Vi gick in och fick veta väntetiden för ett bord skulle vara 2 timmar, så vi bestämde oss för att lämna och komma tillbaka. De kontaktade oss ungefär en halvtimme senare och sa att vårt bord skulle vara klart om 15 minuter. Så var medveten om detta om du bestämmer dig för att gå en stund medan du väntar på ett bord - gå inte för långt ifall väntetiden är mindre än väntat.
