Evanston train station! This is a nice place to catch the train- we rode the Union Pacific up to Lake Forest from here. You have to change trains, change lines, change stations here. But this little interchange in Evanston makes it easy. It's all handicapped accessible. It's super fast, there's lovely landscaping along the way between the stations on the ramp, and it's a nice smooth transition. There was lots of shade to hang out under and some seating for tired commuters. The signs were easy to read and everything was understandable. The conductors were super nice and accommodating when we needed a little extra help getting in and off the train. It was a good experience coming through Evanston for this station!

This review is specific to the line I took when I did this check-in, which is the Metra UP-N line. The Metra Union Pacific North line is da bomb. I don't take this line at a regular basis, instead take the line going to I live in the NorthWest burbs. This one is the line that goes to Evanston passing hipster neighborhoods like Ravenswood and Rogers Park. It's like the CTA, except 50-times cleaner and less scary. Living in the burbs for the last 6-years, I missed the different crowds when traveling public transportation. So I was refreshed to see a Metra train full of yuppies, suits, and beautiful women. Oh how I miss the city

My trip started 6 in the morning, and honestly, there isn't anything like a strong smell of urine to wake a person right up! And that is where a star gets knocked off. (Might as well get the negative out of the way!) With all that said, I like this station. Why? Because of location, location, location. It's right in the heart of Downtown Evanston. Even as early as 6 am, the area is decently lit and has enough traffic movement going around to make this area a tad bit less scary. There is also enough covered areas and an enclosed area if one wants to avoid harsh weather. And you have the luxury of the CTA purple line next door!

Dear metra, I have a bone to pick with you. Ok ok so I'm actually a fan of the CTA which probably seems weird but it's true. But the Metra has made a big blunder today and I am not amused. So, according to all official communication from Metra, including the Ventra app, the northbound UP-N train was due to arrive at Davis before the south bound one. At the station (where nobody was working as it's Saturday) there were barely audible announcements that the northbound train was going to be showing up in a few minutes on the southbound tracks. Train number and all. The train that showed up in the exact amount of time announced (and aligning with the app) turned out to be the Chicago-bound train. The trains were due to arrive around the same time due to a slight delay, and the southbound train passed first in the correct lane. Completely unannounced. But there was nobody near the doors in the cab that we boarded, again probably because it's Saturday. So everyone at Davis boarded the wrong train. Bravo. Guess where a bunch of us are going? Great Lakes. You know, the Navy school, to see our families. The ones who are standing outside waiting with no phones wondering where we are at this exact moment. Maybe there was a Fb post or a Tweet or something saying something different, but how many additional channels are necessary when there is nobody working at the station and the loudspeakers are announcing "this is train 803"?

I had a 10 ride with all but the 10th ride used. The conductor that punched the 5th ride had punched it twice (clearly twice on the 5th ride and not one on the 5th and one on the 10th). The conductor today claimed that second punch on the 5th ride was meant for the 10th. He killed my card and made me pay cash for an extra ride. The conductor is wrong. I did not use the 10th ride. Other than there being no punch on the 10th, if I had used all punches then the conductor prior would have killed the card, which he did not. If the conductors want to follow a strict 10 punches per ride policy, then they need to learn how to only punch one time per ride and actually get the punches on the right number the first time.

Metra Rocks. Clean fast trains, although not always on time. Location, Location, Location. This station is in a good area to hop off and explore a little bit of Evanston, or hop off here and get on the CTA (purple line) just a few steps away that takes you to Howard, where you can get on several other lines to the city. Station itself is meh. No real seating trackside, and the station seems to be closed, ALOT.

I love this Metra Stop. It's super easy for me to to take the Union Pacific Line to Kenosha when ever I want to go back home. Plus, it's not in a sketchy part of town, so I can feel safe when I am a solo traveler! Woo!

There are no chairs on the south bound side of the tracks and the ticket office is only open from 5.15 am - 1 pm week days. The man who staffs the office is impolite and almost helpful. His favorite phrase is "no refund." You may buy weekend passes but only for a specific weekend. Customer service was stricken from the Metra manual years ago.

If visiting Chicago avoid the Metra. It's useless. Stations are poorly marked. It's unclear where or how to buy tickets and the train schedule is such that if you miss one you're going to be waiting an hour or more for the next one. The trains also stop running pretty early so if you're seeing a show downtown you need to make alternative plans.

A lot of inside bench seating in an old and worn station. A small coffeeshop, "The Daily Grind", operates in an adjoining room. I've found the ticket agent to be friendly and helpful, but be advised he closes the ticket office from 10:45 to 11 AM most mornings in order to be on the platform to hand off the morning receipts to the conductor in the first car, so you can't buy a ticket easily for the 11 AM train. I don't believe this station has a restroom. Outside on the platform, there is little to no seating for waiting passengers, except to perch on the edge of the concrete pillar supports. This station is well located in downtown Evanston, with lots of restaurants, coffee shops, a great bakery (Bennison's), a movie theatre and other attractions just steps away from the tracks. It's also a terrific place to transfer between Metra and the CTA's Purple Line, though you can also do that at Main Street further south.
