I wish there was more there, but I mean it is what it is. Just be careful if you go during the day. I went to see the laser dark side, and ended up walking out about 10 minutes is because a woman had her two kids there yelling and screaming. She as asked to turn off her phone, was back in it two minutes later. Kids were loud, the man that told her to turn off her phone did not ask her to quiet her kids. It was a waste or time and money for me and my son as we could not enjoy it ourselves. I'm sure it would have been fun had that ignorant person actually patented her children.

Cernan Center is the planetarium that is part of Triton College. It's also a little gem in the near west suburbs. It is no comparison to the superb Adler Planetarium, but it is a perfect place for a short visit on a Sunday afternoon for a 4-1/2 year old aspiring meteorologist and cartographer like my son. It's got the "mom-and-pop" store feel the moment you go in and buy the tickets from the kind, elderly lady at the Star Store. Just like its larger lakefront counterpart, Cernan has sky shows in a small, dome-shaped theatre. It also has weekly laser shows like "Legends of Rock." Years ago, I remember seeing a Led Zeppelin laser show there. They draw a smaller crowd, parking is abundant and free, and sky show admission is only $4 for a kid and $8 for adults. We went for the Sunday weekly 2 PM interactive kids movie, targeted for pre-K and kindergarten aged children. "Magic Sky" explained a day of viewing the sky. We saw the sun's journey from sunrise to sunset, followed by identifying some popular constellations and some insight on the moon. Then a short film followed explaining each planet in the solar system, as narrated by an animated, bug-eyed sun. It succeeded in keeping my 4 year old quiet and in his seat for its 45 minute duration, which was remarkable. There's also some exhibits, like a miniature lunar landscape, a space suit, a 1/15 replica Space Shuttle, and a brachiosaurus footprint mold. Takes about 10 minutes to see it all, but it's perfect for a short attention span. The Star Store inside has kid and grownup space-themed books, posters, toys and glow-in-the-dark stars to put on your ceiling. No substitute for Astronomer Joe's place, but a fine educational activity for a curious child on a winter weekend.

I'm so glad we visited this hidden gem! I took my 5 year old to the 2:30 showing of the dinosaur movie and we were the only ones there. $8 for me, $4 for her. The place is similar to the OmniMax theatre at Museum of Science and Industry. After the show, they projected the stars and constellations on the screen and answered any questions we had. Cute gift shop, very friendly staff. Thanks Cernan!

The laser light show (we saw Ray of Light) at 9 pm looks like something that was created back in 1999 because the music and visuals are outdated. That being said, it was still something fun and different and I recommend people check it out. It's not crowded at all since most families go to the earlier shows. It lasts about an hour. I'd come back to see their holiday-themed laser shows and I'd also like to catch a night sky viewing as well this summer.

So fun for kids of all ages! Yes its not the planetarium, but on a cold wintry day its a wonderful little place to bring the kids. Also the movie was fun and educational. Plus parking is super easy and right in front!

I just came here a while ago for the laser light show (this one featured Queen) and it was a great experience. Helpful and friendly staff, some cool displays in the lobby including a real spacesuit, and a cool light show that made for a great night out.

As a teenager, I'd hit this laser light show on a regular basis, and it was amazing. Saw Dark Side of the Moon, and the sound was as good as the visual experience. At least that is what I remember of it. Took my wife and son to see the Legend of Rock show there this past Friday night, and I was really embarrassed after talking it up so much to my family. Other than us, there were four other people in the place, and I was confused by this because back in the day, there was a line to get tickets at the box office window. As soon as the show began, I understood why. The sound quality is absolutely horrible. I'm not a sound engineer, but I am an avid music listener, and let me tell you that something is terribly wrong. We were expecting a clean/clear, and louder sound experience, this is Legends of Rock after all! The Hammer of the Gods and all that! They warn you somewhere that this may not be appropriate for young families because of the subject matter, etc. What we got was a distorted, quiet, choppy audio track. If the sound had been great, I could have overlooked the light show that looked like it was scribbled out by a Kindergarten classroom (no offense, I like my kids young artwork and all, just was out of place here). After the show ended, I found the guy who looked like he was in charge, and tried to let him know about our experience, and he could not have possibly cared less what I had to say. I suggested they invest in new sound equipment. He told me it was brand new, but that the sound track was probably just old. He recommended we come back and see a different show, and that the sound would most likely be better. I spent $30 to take my family there and left bitterly disappointed. Why would I give this place another dime? They might be doing great astronomy programs there, but if your going to also provide an entertainment program, it should be worthwhile. Management is missing the opportunity to pack that place every show, like it was back in the day. I wish they had named this show more accurately: Distorted, Quiet, Poorly Selected Music Tracks Set to a Visual Show of My Kids Kindergarden Artwork. I would have thought twice before shelling out my $30. Sorry Mr. Manager, I'll not be trying your other shows. Here's my suggestion to you: try to put out a decent experience, and pay attention to your customers when they give you feedback about your product. You might just pack' em in again!

This is my favorite astronomy place around. It may not be as big as the Adler - but an evening with a planetarium show will cost a few bucks (like, $4) for my wife and I. It's small, not crowded at all, and the staff are very friendly. Highly recommended.

The laser light shows choreographed to music are a great good clean fun date night. However, if you want to experience the center for the excellent acoustics and enjoy the music that goes along with the show this is not the place. I feel it is the management (or should I say lack of management) that really turned me off. I was told that the show was starting at exactly 9:pm and to hurry up as I was waiting in line to pay for my ticket. The cashiers were unable to keep up with the crowd, but no consideration to the paying customer was attended to. I asked them how it is possible to start the show before I was allowed to enter due to the length of the line. I was ignored and had to run before the door closed once I had my ticket to enter. Then, asked to turn up the music because I could not even hear the base because it was too quiet. Too much money to be disregarded, disrespected and unappreciated. I will spend my money elsewhere.
