This was my first visit to this nice summer festival. Without any kiddos in tow, which is not really in the job description anymore except in umm special situations, I was only interested in the free concerts. The atmosphere on a pleasant Saturday evening was crowded, festive, buoyant, well-behaved, and safe with a good visible presence by the Skokie police. This festival is really great for the area and has grown in its local renown. I actually lived in Skokie from 1982 - 1995 and this event didn't exist until 2007. We saw about half of Americana singer Micheal McDermott's performance followed by alt-rock band Vertical Horizon. For the price, t'was very enjoyable. I never heard of either and it was no biggie, but I saw that the Bash drew Foghat here at least one year, so they occasionally get some big names. I also learned I didn't need to lug around portable chairs to watch the main stage. There's fold-up chairs already set up and available and it's easy to nab a couple of seats if you're there before a performance starts. Midway through one though, it's harder at prime time, but with people coming and going, the wife and I still managed to nab a couple seats pretty close to the front. Parking can be a little challenging as it's virtually all neighborhood street parking. You just have to circle around looking for an opening and be willing to walk a little. Great festival, and a great first visit for us! Thank you Skokie!

I like the fact that I could just walk to this event from my home, no car necessary, not at all. Downtown Skokie is experiencing a resurgence and the Backlot Bash is part of that good feeling about living close to Oakton and Niles Center Rd. And it's a three day event (Friday - Sunday) and there's a little something for everyone - kiddie rides, funnel cake, a beer garden, car show, good food (relatively speaking), live bands and you can go during the day and at night. I really have enjoyed the bands, here's a list of who I've seen - The Wailers (without Peter, Bunny and Bob), the Fixx (One thing leads to another), Blue Oyster Cult (more cowbell please), Flock of Seagulls (actually missed them as I was in Ireland) and most recently Foghat (I just wanna make, love to you - whoops, this is a PG rated review). So that's a pretty awesome list for a free neighborhood concert. I do worry though because this event is getting bigger and bigger and bigger each year. I think they need to go West on Oakton for more space. I haven't asked the home owners though, for their opinion. I do have to say that I enjoy the folks who bring their little kids or their aging parents to watch a rock concert, that just warms my heart. Like I said, there's a little something for everyone. It's also really safe, there's always the Skokie 5-0 swat truck parked right in front. Now I just hope next years band will be even better - how about Rush, REO or Cheap Trick, The Romantics, wouldn't that be great?!?

I must admit. Last night was fun. Rides for the kiddos, beer garden for the adults with Flock of Seagulls playing on stage, and funnel cakes! Better than your typical carnival because of the ambiance that the beer garden brings, along with the live band. Beer prices were reasonable too at $5. I just wish that there were more kid rides for the older kids ages 7-9. I felt that they were geared more towards smaller toddlers around 3-5 yrs of age and none of the kid rides really left the ground. Nonetheless, my 7 year old still had a blast. All day wristbands for weekdays was pretty steep too at $30 from 6pm-10pm. I didn't think it was worth it since we got there closer to 8pm. Weekend wristband prices are more reasonable at $25 and I believe its for all day (dont quote me on that). Lots of food choices also, typical carnival food. Definitely check this carnival out if you can. Great end of summer event to take the family too.

Have I really not written a review? The Skokie Backlot Bash is the little festival that could. My band played here four years ago ahead of the Fixx, and we were treated so well. This year's headliners were Living Colour and Tributosaurus as the Police, and I know last year they had English Beat; so it's a great place to see 80's/90's bands that are still doing it. I also love the local bands that play most of the day, and they switch it off with quieter acoustic stuff in the tent. There's a classic car show, a carnival and rides for the little ones and teens, making this a very family and dog friendly festival. The Skokie Library has almost continual activities for kids during the festival, and had a light sabre demonstration. There's not much in food options but this year I sought out some Real Urban BBQ for some great brisket on mac 'n' cheese. This is a great little festival that has unique charm.

One of my favorite summer events! Think carnival/festival/live music/food and fun, right in downtown Skokie! Streets are blocked off around Oakton and there's a large stage in front of the library which hosts local bands Friday night through Sunday, in addition to food vendors, a beer garden, and rides and games for the kids. Not to mention my daughter's dance troupe performs on the library stage every year during the fest! It's a good time for people of all ages!!

This review is for Friday 8/25/17. We made the trek to lovely Skokie, IL to see THE ALARM and A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS. --------- PART 1: THE ALARM --------- We were very close and center for The Alarm. The sound quality for their set was fantastic. The quality of the vocals and backing music was impeccable. I have to say, The Alarm really rocked it - I especially appreciate the enthusiasm of the lead singer, Mike Peters. He was jumping around onstage like a guy half his age. It was a magical and wonderful experience. I learned at the event that Mike Peters' passion project is registering bone marrow donors, as he has battled leukemia for decades. He even arranged to have an on-site donor matching program for those who would wish to potentially save a life as a donor. I find it admirable whenever a public person becomes the voice of the underserved, such as those looking life-saving a bone marrow match. --------- PART 2: A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS --------- The crowd for A Flock of Seagulls was much larger. After taking a dinner break and losing our prime spot, we found ourselves further back than we had hoped. Overall, it was a decent set. I was at an all-day 80's concert last year that featured A Flock of Seagulls and I must note that I believe they were having a bit of an off night (as compared to when I saw them in May 2016). It was still enjoyable and the crowd absolutely lost it when they sang their megahit, "I Ran." A side note... We were also at Skokie's Backlot Bash last year to see The Psychedelic Furs and they were amazing as well. I will be back again, and I highly recommend this festival to anyone who loves retro/first wave alternative bands!

This festival is literally in my backyard so I cannot avoid it. It is a nice, small festival. This year did seem to have less activities and movies than the previous years. It would be nice to have some more adult-focused activities other than bingo and the beer tent. The music lineup is typically very good. Feedback for organizers: What about having a Taste of Skokie food tasting? This could bring a lot more local flavor to the festival.

Skokie Backlot Bash is the perfect little festival. I've gone off/on for the past few years. After going a couple weeks ago, I'll be making a point of going every summer. It's small and manageable (never feels crowded), and parking is pretty easy to find on surrounding residential streets. The food is typical "festival" fare, in that it's mostly fried stuff, but that's to be expected. They have carnival rides, classic cars, a beer garden. And best of all? It's FREE to get in. None of that pesky "suggested donation" bs. Me, I go for the music. In fact, this year I went two nights in a row. The first was to see one of my favorite early 90's bands, Living Colour. I hadn't seen them live since the very first Lollapalooza (yes, I'm old), and they sounded as good as ever. The crowd really got into it. The second night I went to see my much-beloved Tributosaurus, who "became" The Police. If you're not familiar with this band, they are a cover band and they "become" that band and replicate their music so it sounds exactly like it should. They do a different band every time they play. As they say, they aren't A tribute band, but EVERY tribute band. Skokie Backlot Bash is one of the few summer festivals I make a point of going to. It's great fun for the whole family. See you next summer!

The Village of Skokie is just AWESOME. The Backlot Bash is a lot of fun for all ages and provides an end-of-summer experience to round out those warm weather memories. Things to make, music, carnival rides and games, prizes to win, shopping, food, and an unbelievable photo op. Free admission. Wander about or buy tickets and have some fun.

Small carnival for the kids. In fact the whole thing is on the small scale. Car show small, food is good but limited choices. One vendor had enough choices to run the joint by themselves. Fairly large beer tent though. The music stage was free and the night I was there Living Color was playing. They were always on my bucket list. They flat out rocked it! They were so loud and powerful you could probably hear them in Evanston. 5 stars for them. After that they closed for the evening. We ended up at the Village Tavern but that's another review.
