This place was awesome. I cannot believe we have not been here before. I never heard of this place until last July. A guide at a home in Mobile AL was involved in building the museum and he recommended this place. Well worth the stop.

Honestly, I had high hopes, but I should have known better. The state of LA has a rich history of being part of the Deep South so I'm not sure why I expected anything elevated, learned, recognized, or truthful to be here. The museum is cheap to get into, can be completed in less than 2 hours and is technically geared more towards school age, but since it was our first time in the state capitol I figured it was worth the visit. I actually found myself crying, actual tears, in the middle of a museum for how poorly done the entire portion on slavery was. If ever there was a chance for a state to tell the real story, the real history, this would be it and that isn't what happens here. At EVERY turn there was some watered down version of how slaves "benefited" or "learned skills" and I was horrified. There was an entire section dedicated to slavery and not one school field trip was visiting that section and there were at least 2 buses of kids in the location. Let me be clear though, when I say a section was dedicated to slavery they did not tell the full story or the truth and they didn't even try! The one highlight was learning the history of mardi gras upstairs, but it was very Krewe heavy and I want to believe there's more history to learn there as well.

The Capitol Park Museum, located in downtown Baton Rouge, is a hidden gem brimming with Louisiana State History. At the time of our visit, adult admission was a reasonable $7 per person. There are two floors: the lower floor gallery focuses on Louisiana state history and the top floor focuses on state culture. The exhibits are child friendly but there is a lot of information available to read for those who are so inclined. We spent two hours there and could have spent longer if we had delved deeper into some of the exhibits. If you are wanting to learn about Louisiana or share the history and culture with visiting friends or family, this is your spot.

How did I not know about this state run museum before? I was looking at things to do in Baton Rouge and this came up. Other places nearby seemed more popular, like everyone goes to the more popular places. Reasonable admission prices. I came on the last day of the rotating display that was the DC Mardi Gras. Amazing. Just so much to look at! Come! Take a look around! You won't regret it.

I love history. I must visit this museum. I was looking for a parking spot. I parked in the street. I had to insert coins. I hadn't seen such a parking meter. I couldn't pay by my smartphone and credit card! This meter was some vintage one. I would like to put the meter to the museum. LOL. I really enjoyed everything! I saw exhibitions of Huey Long, Louis Armstrong, and other people in Louisiana. I found some old Japanese (phonograph) record of Louis Armstong. That was amazing. I went upstairs. I really learned about the history and geography of Louisiana. Louisiana has a lot of fo fun such as Jazz, Mardigrass, Cajun food, etc.. Please visit this museum and learn about the culture!

I've been able to pop into the Capitol Park Museum several times for various art shows and celebrations, but I had never really been able to go in and experience the museum solely for visiting it. I took some days off and decided to head to the museum to visit. Staff was incredibly friendly and offered guidance and information. The museum has two levels - the first highlighting the history of Louisiana -good and bad, and the second floor displaying the culture of the state from the regions, to the music, to Mardi Gras. To really experience the exhibits, I think planning about two hours would be appropriate. Don't forget to be a tourist in your own backyard! There is so much to learn and little nuggets from those days of Louisiana History classes to refresh yourself on! I look forward to returning, and I will absolutely send my friends who swing through here. (((After you tour the museum, head over to the Visitor Center and the La State Capitol to see the Huey P Long bullet holes and the Observation Deck!)))

Small but mighty!!! This little museum pack so much history, culture, and fun tid-bits into a shockingly small space! It has been laid out so well! The staff has always been friendly and informative. I have made this visit almost every time I pass through Baton Rouge (5+ this year) and always find something new!

The Capital Park Museum is literally the perfect venue to host a wedding, a reception or any event for that matter. My wife and I have both attended and were a part of several weddings and other events there, and it truly transforms into a beautiful space, especially for weddings! The event coordinator Kelley is so helpful and is a pleasure to deal with! She is always willing to assist and help in any way to make a special day turn into a memory of a lifetime.
