# HI New Orleans Hostel – Affordable Hostel in New Orleans with Great Amenities
HI New Orleans Hostel is a vibrant and welcoming hostel located at 1028 Canal St, New Orleans, LA. Known for its clean facilities and friendly staff, this hostel offers a comfortable stay for travelers seeking budget-friendly accommodations. I've stayed in at least 30 hostels within and outside of the US, and this hostel is a really good one. Far much better than the last hostel I stayed at in NOLA in terms of square footage, amenities, and aesthetics. I only spent 1 night so I cannot comment on the social vibes or if the hostel offer activities to foster social interactions. LOCATION It's really a convenient, great location. The famous Bourbon St is just a few blocks away. The rail car is right there. PARKING You might find temporary parking in front, but the hostel has no allocated parking. You can get discounted garage parking upon arrival. I only found parking on the very top level (level 8) which has no covering. It's a 3 minute walk from the hostel. If you are willing to spend time searching and walking, there are cheaper garage parking nearby for half the price. ROOMS I stayed in the 8-bed women dorm. It wasn't full. Everyone gets a card to enter into the building, staircase to the kitchen from the lobby, and your room. I like the bed setup. Each bed comes with a small moveable lamp light, locker, curtain, power outlet with USB ports per bed. The bed was comfortable. I slept better than where I came from. Sheets looked clean. The bed bunk frame is metal so it won't shake like the wooden ones when people turn or get in or out of bed. If you're a light sleeper, you'll need earplugs. You will hear honks and sirens. BATHROOMS There are at least 5 or 6 shared bathrooms on the floors with dorm rooms. The 5th floor has no shared bathrooms. They say they clean them twice a day, which is good if they really do. I'm glad there are no bathrooms inside the dorm rooms. The shower curtain is not wide enough. The water temperature of the shower was lukewarm and not as hot as I would like. I don't know if it was because multiple people were using the shower at the same time. OTHER THINGS TO NOTE The elevator can only fit 5 people max and it's a bit slow. The kitchen has 2 or 3 huge refrigerators. The lobby has a pool table, different seating arrangements, snacks and beverages for sale. After checking out, there are lockers to store your items. You can also hang out in the lobby till 9 pm. There is a receptionist available 24/7 but they don't seem to answer the phone at all. I called before and after booking my stay and no one answers at all. There is a lot of areas to sit and lounge/chill. In the lobby area and second floor where the kitchen is located. They offer a lot of recommendations for things to do and restaurants. The towel given is small and not an actual bath towel.

This was one of the best hostel experiences I've had! I've stayed at HI Austin, HI DC, HI BERLIN, possibly other locations, and many other hostels, in general. One of the most organized and consistently clean hostels ever! The bed was soooooo comfortable. The staff were accommodating of an accessible need of mine and I appreciate it. And it was a delight to run into staff member, Vincent, daily. He was also helpful carrying a hot bowl of food for me from the microwave. I highly recommend this location and will definitely return.

Everything is always clean, the staff is always nice. The location is in a great spot not too far from the action but gar enough that you can get away and get some sleep until the next event.

I stayed for 2 nights. This facility was kept very clean. The bathrooms were cleaned, and bath mats were restocked several times daily. The staff members were very nice, friendly, and professional. I did not try their continental breakfast that is offered between 7am - 10am, but that is offered on the second floor. Laundry room can be found on the second floor and cost $3.00 that you would pay the front desk. They also have lots of places to study or hold your Zoom call. It is attached to Besame cafe. They also have snacks and waters available for sale, along with some toiletries at the front desk. (There is also a Walgreens two blocks south of Canal St., if needed.) It is very secure. You need to tap your badge to enter the building, to access the dormitories, your room, and your closet. I stayed in an all-female dormitory that had 8 beds. My first night wasn't an issue - most guests were mid-20s to 30's and went to bed by midnight. The second night, new roommates with late arrivals came in at 1:30am. Ear plugs and disposable masks available at the front desk. I also appreciate the facility to provide a free 9-page handout of food and restaurant recommendations, bus information, and a map of the city. There is an iron board available if you're there and your clothes need some ironing. I didn't see that on their website. The location is accessible within walking distance to the French Quarter. You can use their metro transit called RTA, where you can download the app to buy your tickets and plan your trip. The days I visited, they have construction on Canal St. so outside of their facility was one lane road and so I felt bad when Uber/Lyft picked me up because I felt like I was holding up traffic. I would definitely book this place again.

Wish I would have written this review sooner! It's been some months since I had my stay here. It's definitely worth the price! It's a great central location! The rooms were clean, the bathrooms they did have some out-of-service (they need to figure that out, it looks bad) but I was always able to find a bathroom every morning or any time I needed one, so that's the main thing! There is always staff at the front desk, they are reasonably knowledgeable, I got one wrong piece of advice regarding the trolley -- it's 100% cash only, FYI! But, they were nice. The doors lock at a certain time of night so those without a guest card can't waltz in. It's a good deal to grab a drink or two from their coolers before heading out, too! They were reasonably priced and are packaged up to-go if needed. One night I came back from my long day and saw a party bus, like one of those shorter ones catch on fire! Yes, the entire bus was in flames! Luckily, no one got hurt and they all came into our lobby while waiting for their next ride since it was unseasonably cold outside for New Orleans that weekend. On the day you leave, they have an entire room dedicated to locker storage. This is great as you have to check out and may have a later flight. Also, ask about the shuttle bus to the airport! If you have an extra hour to leave early since the bus takes so much longer, it's only a few dollars! That's right, I want to say it was around $2 all the way to the airport! Holy... You have to find the stop and be willing to chill for the ride. This was March 2022, so I'm not sure if that price or bus option will always be available. I mention it since it's super close to the hostel and of course, hostel stayers are looking to save money on lodging and transportation so they can better spend their money on cooler things! Also, the little Spanish/tapas restaurant attached to the hostel is quite lovely! Check it out! They should have some coupons or discount for hostel guests! This was only my third hostel ever and it is more of a high-end hostel, that I can deal with! Lol.

Stayed here for 3 nights, Wed to Sat. One of the best hostels I've ever been to around the world. Plenty of individual private bathrooms, never had an issue having to wait for one. I stayed in an 8-men dorm, people were respectful and we barely saw each other. There is a private locker located next to your bed that your key card locks/unlocks. Everything was clean. I made use of their luggage storage on my day of checkout. There were a few reviews that said this hostel was in a bad neighborhood. I disagree. Felt safe the entire time. It is an eclectic neighborhood though in a big city. There's a Ritz Carlton a block down, Marriott and Fogo de Chao a few blocks down, but there's a check cashing place next door and liquor stores all around. Besame is a nice restaurant attached to the hostel. Bourbon Street starts a few blocks away, and so this area is heavily trafficked. There's a few panhandlers on Canal, but they are harmless and expected in a touristy area. There's a soup kitchen about 4 blocks north on Rampart FYI, but again they are harmless. It's an eclectic neighborhood with a Ritz Carlton 5 blocks away from a soup kitchen and party people going wild a few blocks away. Just be aware of your surroundings like any big city and you'll be fine. The Airport Express 202 shuttle stop is only a few blocks away and only costs $1.25 in cash.

Loved this hostel in New Orleans. I feel it's at a great spot to get to the happening areas by bus or Lyft. There are also places to walk closer by for food. They will let you store your bag in a secured storage area if you arrive early. I stayed in a 6 bunk bed room. There were lockers to put my luggage (I would suggest bringing your own lock). Community bathroom shower was right across from our room and it's individual to where you have privacy. There's also a bar at the basement that's pretty cool. As a solo traveler, I felt very safe and the guests staying were also very respectful and kind. Great place to mingle.

My belongings were stolen from the privately assigned hostel locker! I stayed at the HI Hostel New Orleans for five nights. Upon arrival, the hostel assigned me a private locker (which was inside the dormitory I stayed in) and the hostel provided me a digital locking key for that private locker. Sometime during my stay (during the tail end) all my electronics that were inside the locker (including my expensive cameras) were stolen from that locker. I discovered the items missing when I was packing up to check out. Also, sometime during my stay, the hostel staff had unlocked and accessed my private locker while I was not in the room which I figured out because my clothing and stuff had been shifted around inside my locker. These are two separate facts, but understandably raised an eyebrow for me so I shared both facts. I informed management of the stolen items and I also filed a police report. The management has said they reviewed and ruled out any relation to staff. But the management has made no effort beyond that to address the locker theft. It has been infuriating to get my expensive cameras stolen and at no fault of my own and from what is supposed to be a secured location. I requested the hostel to compensate me for the stolen items considering the loss is due to a breach of their locking mechanism they provide. I have made an effort to communicate and come to some resolution. The management has been dismissive and deflective of any accountability and telling me to contact the police dept instead of them for any further communication. So, the message is, these private security lockers the hostel provides on their premises clearly are neither private nor secure and give you a false sense of security.

Wanted to update because of the breakfast I took advantage of. Nice to save some money. I added an extra night and noticed a dog in my room (small puppy). I'm not allergic but some people are. When I went to the front desk they said if they're a service animal, they can stay. Didn't like that at all because the other guests should have a say. Some are allergic , scared of dogs are just don't like them. Glad I left early that morning. Because I wouldn't have been comfortable sharing a space with an animal. Maybe it should be posted somewhere that it's possible you may share a space with that. Unless I can get my own room, I won't want to share in the future.

I loved this hostel and totally recommend it. Great location and very clean. The staff was super friendly and helpful. I was in an 8-person girls' room and it was very nice and clean. Every comfortable bed had its own curtain, socket for charging mobile phone, reading light, and warm comforter. You get a nice sized locker (will fit a small carry-on bag) that is accessible with your room key card and there is even a socket inside the locker!!!
