Hit and Miss, depending on the crowd. We enjoyed sitting in the stands for small parades. But they do not know how to handle the waiting line for the larger parades. For Endymion 2024, the line formed a couple hours ahead of the entry time. It got to be over a block long. About 15 minutes before the gates opened, they had everyone move. In order to get in the new line, we had to was around a large group of shrubs. As a result, the folks in the back of the line we able to navigate directly to the new line. Our group had waited two hours and ended up toward the back of the line. The event organizers are not very experienced at managing crowds and I would avoid the larger parades. But for the smaller parades, it's a fun experience.

Even as I was telling friends "I'm going to Mardi Gras" I had virtually no understanding of how the whole thing worked. Is it one day? One week? Two months? If you go to a parade can you actually get close enough to see the parade? Catch beads? Where do you go to watch a parade? How do you know when it'll pass by? How long do you have to stand? What if you have to pee? So many questions. Finding New Orleans Parade Tickets (NOPT) gave me some assurance that I'd see at least one parade close up, while seated, with nearby, dedicated restrooms. NOPT's web site is where you go to purchase grandstand (elevated bleacher) parade seating. The seats are priced according to the parade's popularity with Endymion and Bacchus parades costing the most and even though parades might be happening sequentially, from day into evening, your ticket is only for the parade you've purchased. In advance of my trip (purchase early, they do sell out) I'd purchased 3 tickets to watch the Endymion parade from the St Charles Street grandstand (seating also available near Lafayette Square) and the tickets were sent to me via USPS. The evening before Endymion I found myself down in the Arts District and watched 3 parades from close-up without arriving much before they rolled by. If it was this easy I wondered, maybe I'd wasted money buying seats. But I hadn't. Although you can find a place to watch almost any parade, you'll deal with stuff that having advance purchased seats removes you from completely. Although I sprung for seating for only one parade, I was really glad I did. It was unique and made the whole thing effortless. Upon entry to the grandstands we nabbed seats in the back row, providing back support and the opportunity to stand without bothering anyone. The promised restrooms were 2 port-a-potties (for ticket holders only) which were welcome but thoroughly disgusting by the end of the parade (they're in use for all parades that day). And beads? Don't you worry; you'll leave NOLA with more beads than you need in a lifetime. NOPT worked perfectly for me. If you've got the money and want to treat yourself, I highly recommend you spring for seats for one of the big parades.
