Note: During my visit, they were requiring proof of COVID vaccination and requiring mask use. They did provide masks. The Jewish Museum of Maryland is as niche as it sounds. It is really focused on the specific history of Jews in Maryland. With some family ties along those lines myself, I thought it a worthwhile exhibition. The main attraction is the tour of two adjacent synagogues, which is generally twice a day. Check the times accordingly. If you're not on time for one of those tours, the museum itself is a couple of rooms, one with local history of Baltimore, and the other with a rotating exhibit which on the occasion I stopped in was focused on the Red Scare and the implications for free speech, with some interactive elements (and some people responding who clearly did not see the parallels to today). The synagogue tour takes one through historic buildings that have been through numerous iterations. One is no longer in active use, and the other holds regular services to this day. They are quite different, and both interesting. A docent-led tour held fine details on the history of the space. You can't walk into these buildings without supervision. If you ever wanted to here the word "Torah" pronounced with that Baltimore accent "O", this is the place. It was a reasonably interesting museum that I spent probably and hour and a half to two hours on (the synagogue tour is an hour). It won't be for everyone given the narrow focus, but even those without Jewish immigrants in their family tree would do well to learn a little bit about the history of this country and the people who make it work.

Awesome event held in conjunction with MPT - Great staff and attendees - Being African American and attending I had a 10% feeling of uneasiness attending however I'm a true believer and wanted to have knowledge, especially here in Baltimore since this is where I reside. Everyone was friendly and open - the program was very informative - however the tour was amazing - A special note of thanks to Ms. Wendy Davis the tour guide - so knowledgeable, energetic and helpful -

The $10 adult entrance fee included a self guided tour of the small museum, a limited time exhibit, and a guided tour of the two synagogues. The museum mainly projected the Jewish history of Baltimore. It was very educational. I didn't know Baltimore was a popular destination for German, Russian, and Eastern European Jewish population. The exhibits focused a lot on Jewish daily life. The limited time exhibit deal with recycled rags and metals and it's work relationship with Jewish population. The guided tour of the two synagogues were very interesting. Lots of the original furniture, glass works, and religious items were still in use. In fact one of the synagogue has an active congregation. For $10, it was absolutely a wonderful way to spend 2 to 3 hours.

Visiting the Jewish Museum of Maryland was a highlight of my visit to Baltimore this past Memorial Day weekend. The museum is small but has an area for their permanent collection ("Voices of Lombard Street" - an exhibit on the history of Baltimore's Jewish residents of Jonestown) and two small temporary exhibits (when I visited there was two exhibits relating to fashion, one on a Jewish Czech fashion designer who died during in the Holocaust). I wish there was a bit of information about the history of Maryland's Jews - when did the first Jew arrive in Maryland? - but I really enjoyed the exhibits they did have. The highlight for me though was that you can tour two synagogues on either side of the building. One is considered the third oldest synagogue (still standing) in the United States, and the other is still in use. Built something like 20-30 years apart, they are very different architecturally speaking, and it was wonderful to tour both and learn about their histories. My tour guide was Ray, and it ended up just being the two of us on my tour. He was was wonderful and answered all my questions. The museum also has a pretty great gift shop! Overall, I learned a lot about Baltimore's Jewish community (did you know East Lombard Street was once called "Corned Beef Row" or that Jonestown once had a "Horseradish Lane"?) and thoroughly enjoyed my visit.

The Paul Simon: Words & Music exhibit was fantastic. I've been a huge fan of Paul Simon since I was a little girl and I was excited that the museum provided an opportunity to bring this exhibit to Baltimore. I loved seeing hand written lyrics, rare photographs, Paul's Grammy Awards, guitars and other artifacts and videos from Paul's life. I liked that there were various videos around the exhibit to hear Paul talk about his career in his own words. You truly got an insight into his life, how he writes his music, and his career. The only downside was how crowded it got inside the exhibit. I believe the museum lets in up to 50 people in half hour intervals. Perhaps they could cut down that number in the future for a more comfortable experience? The room was small and there was a lot to read, so if two people were standing close to the cases, it prevented you from seeing anything until they moved. The TVs showing the interviews went on for several minutes, which meant a huge group of people standing in one spot watching them. I'm very thankful the closed captions were on for the interviews because people were talking over the interviews and singing along to the songs in another area of the exhibit, so it made it easier to follow along. 3 tickets cost us $28 - $10 for adults and $8 for seniors 65+. If you buy tickets online, print out your confirmation page and give it to someone at the front desk when you arrive. They will ask you how you heard about the museum, your zip code, and give you a paper bracelet to get into the exhibit. We also stopped in to see Voices of Lombard Street: A Century of Change in East Baltimore. It was interesting to see how much Lombard Street changed over the years. This exhibit would be great for kids to get an insight on what times were like back then. You got a feel for how people lived, shopped, worked, etc. Each section had sound effects to heighten your overall experience of that space. The gift shop had some Paul Simon merchandise (at 25% off!) and featured beautiful jewelry, books, and toys. The employees we encountered were polite and helpful. The museum is small, so it's not a place you're going to spend hours and hours at. If you're interested in Jewish history and culture in Baltimore (and in general) I feel like this museum would be worthwhile to go to.

Although the museum is small, it's a real treasure. We went there today and liked all three exhibits, but "Voices of Lombard Street" was the absolute highlight; it was VERY well done and quite informative. The gift shop has a nice selection for a museum of that size, including some wonderful photo books published by the museum. Free parking is available at a parking lot directly across the street.

Last week I took a group of middle school students here! They enjoyed it and learned SO many new things. They were able to explore Maryland's oldest synagogue and complete a hands-on scavenger hunt, which encouraged them to explore the exhibits. The employees were attentive and very hands on. I definitely recommend this Museum. We will be back.

This museum has only one permanent exhibit that is about the Jews of Lombard Street in the first half of the 20th century. Other than that there really isn't anything unless they are having some kind of special event. You will get no information on the Jews of Maryland but only the Jews of Lombard Street and only Jews that arrived from Eastern Europe in The Great Migration from the 1890s until 1924. You will walk away knowing nothing about the first Jews to settle in Baltimore or Maryland. You can take a tour of the synagogue that was built in the 1850s. I was so disappointed after having gone out of our way to get to this place that I decided to forego the tour in an attempt to make the best of our limited time in Baltimore.

I'm not Jewish, but I've always been really interested in Judaism and Jewish culture. Coming from New England, I never had much exposure to it, though. When I moved down here to Baltimore, I was thrilled at the size of the Jewish community and the learning opportunities that awaited me. Today I finally had a chance to visit the Jewish Museum of Maryland and I'm ashamed that I waited so long to do so. Everyone that works at the museum is incredibly nice and knowledgeable, and while the museum is on the smaller side, it's still worth a visit. We walked through the two exhibits currently up -- Life on Lombard Street and the Amazing Mendel Cohen -- and also toured the two synagogues that flank the museum building, where we were treated to history lessons on each. To wrap up your visit, there's a very nice gift shop where I purchased a book published by the JMM about the history of Baltimore's department stores. I would absolutely go back once the exhibits change and there's something new to see, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who's interested in Jewish culture, Baltimore history, or who is Jewish and wants to learn more about their religion and history.

The museum is really cool and has started putting on some very clever events. Yesterday, I attended the Gefilte Fest where 3 chefs demonstrated different ways to make this quintessential (and sometimes inedible) Jewish food. Definitely a worthwhile stop if in Baltimore. The reason why I didn't rate this higher is that it is really of niche interest to most people, unlike Ft. McHenry or the Flag House.
