3.5 Stars Look, there aren't many other options at the Zoo, but you could do worse than Whistle Stop. It's mostly a grille-type restaurant. Lots of fried and grilled stuff (including hot dogs and pizzas too) but they do offer healthy salad and bowl options. We got fried chicken strips for the kids and I was surprised just how well-seasoned the crust was. The strips were juicy and big. My wife got a B&O Burger, which was a delicious array of bacon, caramelized onions, and BBQ sauce on a beef patty. I got a falafel burger, which was moist on the inside and had a nice exterior crust. YUM. The fries that came with were perfectly fried and well seasoned as well. The food is a little pricey, but it doesn't have to break the bank (though all bets are off if you order one of their $7 bottles of beer). Service was friendly, but it took a while for the food to be ready. They gave us a buzzer so we could be notified when it was ready. That gave us some time to relax, find a table, and hit the bathrooms.

There really aren't a ton of options, so I wasn't expecting much here; and to be fair, most of the offerings are what you'd expect. The hot dogs are ... well just normal hot dogs. The fries are pretty good. The pizza tastes like the french bread pizza we'd get at elementary school. However - the Falafels. My wife doesn't eat much meat, so that was the best thing on the menu for her. I love falafels, so wasn't going to order one for myself (since a bad one just ruins my day) but at the last minute I decided to go for it, and man was I glad. At first I was skeptical, it isn't a traditional falafel, but rather a burger sized chickpea on a bun bun. Some how, despite the dimensions they've pulled off this off. The outside was perfectly crispy the inside was wonderfully moist while still being cooked through with just the right amount of crumbliness. Topped with a nice tahini sauce, they pulled this off. Honestly, one of the top ten falafels I've ever had. As a side note: Prices seem steep at first, but the sandwich style things come with fries, so not terrible when you consider that you're supporting the zoo. 4 stars - but I'll only be ordering fries and falafel from here when I go back.

Being a captive audience at the zoo for the day this place will do.... Seems kinda expensive for what you get but I understand that you're supporting the zoo by eating here. If this is true, then ok for the high price. The folks running the food stand were so very nice. For that I give 5 stars. Smiling, pleasant, helpful..... Now onto the food. The Pizza - My biggest pet peeve is I like my hot food served hot and cold food like a salad served cold. I was given a pager and had to wait a bit for the pizza which was fine. I assumed they were cooking it fresh to order. Nope... The pizza had clearly been around a while and was just barely warm. Was tasteless. They also didn't have parm to try to flavor it up a bit. It was not very good but not having any alternative it will just have to do. Would not get it again though. The hamburgers looked pretty good but out of my price range for a burger at lunch.

(11/15/2016) It's all right, you're pretty much a captive audience inside the Maryland Zoo. The Whistle Stop is the largest and most varied of the food options inside the grounds. There are the kids standards for hot dogs and chicken tenders. For the adults, salads and wraps. Hot dog was griddled and thick in girth, bun a touch stale. Chicken Tenders had a flaky crispy crust and were actually whole, breaded, tenders from off a whole breast. Wrap was sufficient, looked pre-made, vegetables a little wilty, but OK amount of turkey and cheese. Prices are, well, as expected, exorbitant. The baskets were $7-8 each, but, what are you going to do. Oh, and no outside food allowed inside, of course.
