Still waiting for promised changes to either go back to old style or improve choices greatly. While Mac & Cheese is worth the drive, rest of menu too fancy for most kids and picky adults. This is a family musuem, not a fancy art one. Serving sizes are almost 2 meals for me, but EBS could put done the whole thing with a big smile on his face. Still, with the other choices here, still the place to eat while visiting The Henry Ford Museum.

The Michigan Cafe is one of three limited food options inside the Henry Ford Museum. Considering your choices, their selections and their prices, this is the best one to visit during your time. The restaurant is located near a quieter wing of the museum (near the trains) so it's easy to miss if you're not careful. There are signs pointing to it, though, so you shouldn't have too much trouble. It's a decent restaurant with a few different food options to choose from and a large dining area overlooking the perfectly manicured grounds. They offer food and snacks low as $2 here. If you're eating on a budget, you'll definitely find something to munch on, whether it's a bagel, a bag of chips, some yogurt or a full-fledged meal. I'm partial to their open-face pulled-pork sandwich ($6) and their side of mac and cheese ($2.50). My husband and I have medium appetites and these two items are enough to share to get us through to our next meals. Some of the items are made with local Michigan ingredients, and you'll find Detroit staples like Better Made chips and glass bottles of Faygo, but I don't eat here for the local feel. I eat here because it beats a rubbery Oscar Mayer wiener and the kitschy fare offered at Lamy's, and the prices aren't nearly as high as you'd find in other museums.

Enjoying a vacation day from work to take the kids to The Henry Ford (THF) on their first day of spring break, we had originally planned to have lunch at the American Dog House, then go out for dinner afterward and splurge on a nice meal at one of Dearborn's many excellent Middle Eastern restaurants. However as the line from the Robert Burns poem goes, "the best laid schemes of mice and men often go awry;" upon arriving at the museum, we discovered that the American Dog House is not open on Mondays during the winter. Ooops. Time for Plan B! Wanting to beat the lunch rush at the Michigan Café, we arrived at the restaurant entrance at 11:30am. Since we have eaten at the café a half-dozen times previously, we are not otherwise put off by the confusing layout which seems to befuddle first time customers and cause traffic jams when they wonder about in confusion. As such, we proceeded straight to the cashier to place our orders: a Rotisserie Chicken salad, a Rotisserie Chicken Club sandwich with Better Made barbeque potato chips, a THF Mac + Cheese, and two BLT Mac + Cheese entrées. Adding five sodas and tax, less our discount for being THF members, our total was $52.02, which is definitely on the expensive side, even for museum food. Granted we were on the leading edge of the lunch rush, but there were heaps of open tables and all of them appeared to be very clean. Normally we sit closer to one of the large groups of windows which look out on the beautifully manicured grounds of THF, but today the kids picked a non-window seat. The walls of the restaurant were decorated with outsized postcards from yesteryear from across the state, as well as a large map eschewing Michigan's many tourist sites. We also liked the stained glass light fixtures, which if you stand under them, you can see they have a beautiful stained glass pattern showing the state's two peninsulas in green and the surrounding Great Lakes in blue. After a surprisingly short wait, a very small staff member carrying a very large tray laden with all of our food items honed in on our GPS-enabled order pager. All members of our party immediately dug in to their food, and all really liked their orders. My youngest described the rotisserie chicken salad as being excellent, and she absolutely loved both the hobo bread croutons and the toasted walnuts. My middle child said her rotisserie chicken club sandwich was very good, as were the Better Made BBQ chips. My son and his friend really liked their Mac + Cheese, with him heaping extra praise on the delicious "B" in his BLT Mac + Cheese. I also found the BLT Mac + Cheese to be excellent, with the roasted Roma tomatoes and generous helping of arugula greens on top perfectly accenting the cheesy goodness of the pasta. However I had to agree completely with my son, in that the bacon was the star of the dish. Only this was not like the thin-strips-of-meat kind of bacon you buy at the grocery store, but more of a cubed pork belly that nearly melted in your mouth. Taken together, the dish was absolutely fantastic! Portion-wise, our orders were a mixed bag. Both the chicken salad and the mac and cheeses were such large portions sizes, that even the teenagers did not finish them. Taking the leftovers home was not really an option, as we were planning to stay at THF until it closed at 5pm, so even if we could have gotten to-go boxes, leaving the food unrefrigerated in the car for the next five hours did not sound appealing. However contrasting with those generous portions, was the skimpy club sandwich and chips, which my elder daughter devoured, and then moved on to her sister's leftover salad. While I fully recognize that portion sizes are uniquely individual to each eater, the Michigan Café seemed to suffer from the Goldilocks problem, where the portions were either Papa Bear way-to-big, or Mama Bear way-to-small, and none were Baby Bear just-right. Two more items of additional note: First was the self-service soda fountain, which allowed you to add a flavour shot -or combination of shots- of cherry, lemon, strawberry, or vanilla to your drink. Without my wife there to keep us on the straight-and-narrow, the kids and I had great fun experimenting with different combinations such as vanilla Pepsi, cherry Sierra Mist, strawberry lemonade, etc. Second was the staff on stand-by in the dining room, who quickly and efficiently bussed and cleaned tables as patrons finished and moved on. I even observed them sweeping kids' spilled food items off the floor, which is an easy thing for harried staff to miss -especially during a lunch rush- and says something about the dedication of the employees. While we loved the great flavours, attractive décor, and attentive staff, it could not completely make up for the excessively high prices, uneven portion sizes, or confusing setup for neophites. Regardless, I rate the Michigan Café as being Very Good, and will definitely be returning!

The menu is listed outside but there are also smaller menus to look over. You order at the register and the food it brought to your table. We enjoyed the sandwiches and the gumbo. The gumbo had a small kick of heat and it went well with the chicken salad sandwich. The favorite was the Michigan club sandwich with it's cherries and bacon. Overall, the service was quick and the food was good for a museum.

This was so over priced I don't even know where to start. My husband and I are vegan so we ordered 2 large Fatoush salads which were priced at $8.95 each and it consisted of 1 cup lettuce greens, half a radish and half a cherry tomato with 3 measles tortilla croutons. We also had 2 bowls of Lemon lentil soup for $5.95 each. 2 seltzer waters and our bill came to $38. 2 days ago at the Detroit Institute of Arts we had an amazing salad bar where we picked what we wanted, 2 drinks and the salad was double the size with 2 side entrees of rice, and stir fried vegetables for $20. We have traveled all over the world and this was one big disappointment. I found everything at The Henry Ford Museum way over priced.

The food here was pretty bad and overpriced. There's a throwback McDonald's in the museum, which I'm told is full service. If true, I'd highly recommend that over the Michigan Cafe. There are also other places to eat in the museum, all of which are rated higher than the Mich Cafe on Yelp. This should be a backup place. I picked the specialty burger, mushroom and swiss, thinking it would be the safest option to get a good meal. The burger was dry, well done, and honestly tasted reheated. My guess, considering it was done almost as soon as I ordered, is that they make several burgers at once and keep them drying out on the grill. The single leaf of lettuce and tomato end were sort of pathetic to look at. They also offered caramelized onions, which didn't look or taste like any that I've had before. They were more like wet onions. If it needs to be said, the burger was flavorless and dry, the side of chips were sort of... spongy. An odd adjective for chips, but they were clearly sitting somewhere moist. Save yourself $10 and pack a protein bar, or as mentioned eat elsewhere at the facility.

Horrible, horrible and horrible. Locally sourced from garbage?!! You would think with the prices and advertised local source that the food would be at least decent. WRONG!! I bought a bag of BBQ chips, once opened tasted stale! Yet marked for October. My provolone burger was nasty!! In n out has better basic burgers! An iced tea, chips and cheese burger $12! Atleast make it tasty!!! Sneak food in, eat before entering or find another place. Absolutely horrid. Henry ford museum-allow real restaurants to sell their meals here..at least it would be eatable and somewhat tasty.

The theme is "Postcards from Michigan". The food is the brands that Michiganders love- Vernors, Sanders, Faygo, etc. The food comes from our ancestors, immigrants from Poland, Wales, Finland, Greece, Lebanon, etc. Deep South foods that came here after the auto plants lured people up North. Today, they were serving venison stew and quinoa salads, hot fudge cream puffs, and lots of burger options. Pulled pork and potato chips, etc. The place was packed and while the lines were too long to stop today, we have in the past and found it simple comfort food. If you don't want to eat here, you also have the option of eating at Lamy's Diner, a converted wartime diner that serves tuna fish sandwiches and blue plate specials, along with coffee and dunkers. Or you can eat at the Weiner Cafe, located near the Weinermobile. You can guess what's served there!

Service was terrible. The staff stood around chatting rather than helping the customers coming in to their establishment. Went to get sodas when the nozzle popped off and shot soda all over me. When we finally got someone's attention, we were told the nozzles weren't locked in. Okkkkaaaay, I don't really care and please fix it. Plus I walked around all day with a wet shirt. No apologies whatsoever. Food was good. Hubby had the mac n cheese and bacon sandwich and it was delicious! Beyond delicious! I had the basic Mac and cheese which was good until I tried his sandwich. Wish I would've ordered that instead.
