The DIA has a theater inside, and it's beautiful and shows non-mainstream films. My dad introduced me to this theater and my first and all subsequent visits have been great. Ticket peices are very reasonable and they validate parking. They have a snack shop upstairs where you can get wine and other refreshments such as small sandwiches and brownies and others. Ushers are helpful, pleasant, knowledgeable and good for conversation about the film. The more popular films are the Academy nominated short films, which they show every year. They have sold out, so it's recommended to purchase tickets in advance. Others films include foreign films and older films that are not show very much any more. Perfect date for the obscure film buff!

What a beautiful and unique theater! I learned this weekend that it is the only one of it's kind in the country. How cool! The design is just gorgeous and the volunteer staff are amazing. Full bar and concessions upstairs, the seats are relatively comfortable for such an old theater, sound and picture perfect. The only drawback on busy nights is the ladies room - with 4 stalls, it creates quite a line. We went to see all of the shorts nominated for Oscars, and what a great way to view them! 100% worth the ticket price; I'm already planning to attend every year, as well as go see more films there. A true gem in the city.

After a few more visits I have to say I have no idea why I didn't give this baby 5 stars from the very beginning. It's gorgeous, they've got a great selection of indie and foreign films, and some classics as well. The concession stand has a fancy selection of treats like wine, pastries, and more. The screen is huge, the seats are all right (not the sprawling seats you'll find at more modern multiplexes but they're not uncomfortable by any stretch). The films are a combination of beautiful, thought provoking, and inventive. The epitome of a 5 star film experience! It's a lovely night out, totally elevating the typical movie night into something really truly special.

The Detroit Film Theatre is part of the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA). It's tucked into a building just to the right of one of the entrances. Admission to the museum and tickets to a film are separate - you can do just one or both. My brother and I were visiting Detroit for a weekend - we spent one evening exploring the collection at the DIA (open until 10pm on Fridays!!!) and the following evening at a film at the Detroit Film Theatre. The theater is gorgeous. The films screened interesting and varied (we saw a documentary about the artist Christo but this upcoming week they're showing a documentary about Toni Morrison)! The ticket prices are reasonable ($9.50, or $7.0 for seniors, students, and DIA members). Having once lived in a city that has a similar theater in a museum (Houston) but now living in a city without a great art museum and certainly without an art museum that offers a theater (Nashville), I am jealous of Detroit residents that can visit this theater every weekend! What an amazing film program!

One of my favorite places in Detroit, the DFT is tucked into the backside of the DIA. GORGEOUS interior, with many community events (including free screenings!) Throughout the year. Admission is affordable, and though you can't take snacks into the theatre there's a lovely cafe on the second floor. If you buy a punch card for admission, they include parking passes for the lot across the street! Cannot recommend this place enough. Why haven't you gone yet?

What a beautiful theatre. My first time here, and I'm impressed with just about everything. The SO and I came here to see "Old Stone", an art film directed by Johnny Ma, and set in today's China. The movie was just OK, but I'm definitely coming back here for another film. Great place to see a movie. Just a note - there are no concessions sold here, so if you want something to munch on, you should bring it with you. There is a café (check their hours) in the larger DIA part of the complex if you'd like to have a snack or a meal before or after the film.

I'm a member of the DIA and didn't know about this pretty theater on the back side of the building. Went to the Cinetopia screening of Symphony in D here and enjoyed the theater and the movie. Down side is the restroom only had 4 stalls!

I have mad mad love for the DFT. This is hands down one of my favorite places to go to in the city. If I'm not working a weekend, it is very likely you can find me here especially now that I'm a volunteer usher for the DFT. (Hands down easiest and best volunteer job EVER!) Highly recommend. More on that later. First of all, this theatre is GORGEOUS. What a treat to watch a movie in such beautiful surroundings with so much history. Those are the original seat backs and arms you're sitting on by the way from 1927. That's why you're not allowed to bring in food or drinks. No popcorn is a bummer but small price to pay for sitting on chairs that long ago Detroit theatre goers used to sit in. Kind of cool if I do say so myself. There are so many things to appreciate here, from the Pewabic pottery on the stairs, to the beautiful chandeliers in the Crystal gallery cafe on the second floor, to the water fountain that is literally a work of art. Also how great is that smiley face that greets you when you enter the theatre. Kills me every time. Eclectic movie selections. I have watched quite a few of them since I volunteer here and I have to say some of them had me snoozing. They're not all winners. However, I do appreciate them all because they were picked because they bring you a different perspective or something else that is unique ie. filming style AND these are not movies you will likely find anytime soon at your local library or video store. A memorable one from this past season was Felix and Meira that gives you an inside look into the lives of Hasidic Jews and that was very enlightening. Since the theatre can seat up to 1200 people and for most of the showings they don't get near that number of people (some nights it can be as few as 30 specifically Father's day comes to mind), you can easily have a whole row or section of the theatre to yourself. I personally like to sit in the balcony because there's even less people who sit up there. Feeling pensive and looking for something low-key and quiet to do on a Friday night? This is the place to be. Also a perfect place to take a date. Every year they also play host to the Oscar-nominated shorts and I highly recommend checking that out. I've gone the last two years and have laughed and cried. They will not leave you disappointed. Regarding being a volunteer. You do need to attend 2 orientations, one general and one for being a DFT usher and they're only held certain times of the year and sometimes there is a waitlist so e-mail them sooner rather than later. Basically I come in 1 hour before the film and help with taking tickets or the ever popular giving directions to the restrooms. The crowd is great and you get to recognize the regulars. Every other volunteer I've met here has been super cool and passionate about the arts which I love. And once you've helped out, you get to watch the movie for free. Quite the sweet deal if you ask me. FYI there is no cell service in the basement where the bathrooms are. Tickets are a steal at $8.50 and only $6.50 for students, senior citizens, and DIA members. Plus when you buy a ticket, they give you a free parking pass for your next visit. Pass is for the DIA parking lot on John R which is across the street from the DFT and which alone is worth $7. This place is the bee's knees so if you haven't checked it out yet, please do and come say hi if you see me volunteering. :)

Not only are the movies art, but the theatre is, too. You could walk in here stinking and bedraggled and the beautiful, ornate surroundings will make you feel like you're wearing a natty sportcoat, tophat and monocle (or a fur coat and spectator heels if you're a lady). The films are at least a couple steps removed from the usual Hollywood dreck. I saw "A Separation" there tonight and it's a great picture, full of twists and turns, keeping you reading the subtitles, demanding answers. Now and then they'll even have a filmmaker in-house for a Q & A session after their film screens. I saw Spike Lee hold court after a showing of "Bamboozled" once. They even have a Thursday night series featuring Detroit-themed films running in addition to the weekend series. They're showing a flick about the Grande Ballroom sometime in April. At $7.50 adult admission it's pricier than the Cass City Cinema down the way but the splendor is worth it. And it's definitely a better deal than paying to see a first-run film at some mall multiplex where some idiot is liable to flap their gums through the whole film. There's even a snazzy cafe upstairs - a charming place to meet friends or simply relax and enjoy a beverage before a film. Or something like that. It used to say that on the season's film schedule and I enjoyed repeating the stilted description like it was something that had just popped into my head.
