5 stars for Old Man Peking and his Peking Express hat! "You want spicy, no spice?" Then he bangs on the bell and yells at his wife while she cooks your food. The food is alright, but the real value is the entertainment from the owners.

Arrived on 10pm Oct 10th Sun but staff was so friendly to serve us until we left. Lamb Pot was really good after a long trip. Can't forget the Spicy Ti Jin which was great! About $20 a person. Easy to find a parking lot nearby.

This used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant in East Lansing, and really, in all of Michigan. The tiny, hole-in-the-wall place run by an old man and his wife - immigrants from eastern China in the 1970s - was a great place to go for any kind of quick Cantonese craving. It reminds me now of some of the little places in Shanghai, owned by similar-minded folks, which for me adds a little bit of authenticity. Or at least down-home Chinese atmosphere. Having tried just about everything from the mongolian beef to the sweet and sour pork and tons of the various daily specials, I can honestly say that in my opinion, nothing was bad there. I'm not huge on water chestnuts so I'd avoid those dishes with 'em, myself, but that's a matter of personal taste and not quality. And the old man and his wife were friendly folks, too. After awhile they knew you by name, what you were up to - as a student they knew what I was studying and would ask how various things were coming along. When things were slow, they'd let me in a little bit on their family, and how their sons were doing and all that, even though I'd never met them and likely never will. They'd become characters in a family drama that I'd gotten to, at least in part, bear witness to. Really, just great people altogether. Sometimes when I get Chinese food elsewhere, I kind of miss them, and wish they were still in the back running the kitchen or something. A couple years ago or so they moved into a new, bigger location, and the old man confessed that they were having trouble making ends meet. The rent was too high, and business was slowing down. I'd moved away by then, and was only in town visiting, so certainly I was no help to them, but I ordered a plate of mongolian beef and the largest coke they had, to try and do my part. I still spent under ten bucks. He brought it to me at my table, now that they had actual tables, his wife in tow with an extra serving of rice, and it was the last time I ever saw either of them. The place has new owners now, and they also serve korean dishes as well. It's still pretty decent food, but it's still primarily Cantonese, so really, you have to go a long way to screw it up. Now if you're dining in, sometimes they'll serve you on those cast-iron sizzle plates, which I still get a kick out of, despite it being wholly unauthentic and inappropriate. Either way, it's not the same without the old man and his wife. I hope they're doing alright, Chinese food in Michigan isn't the same without them.

When this place first opened, boy was the food magnificent. I use to only get Chinese food here and it all went downhill... THEN, the business was sold to another owner. The food then got worse and worse. My Shrimp Omelette that I normally get was just not the same. It became too oily and they starting skimping on the shrimp. Had the Mango Pudding there and it was really good. Again, haven't had it once it was under new ownership.. It's sad that it has come to this where I can't go back to enjoy a good meal anymore.

I had heard that this is a great place for Chinese food - mostly from MSU grads. I finally got a chance to check out this place and I was not impressed. Service was very rushed even though there was just a few customers scattered through the dining room. I ordered the BBQ duck on rice for $6.95. The entire dish was lukewarm - tasty enough, but not great. I think this was a great place back in the day and under previous owners as I've figured out from reading the other reviews. I'll probably not be back.

Solid lunch destination. This little hole in the wall (or basement if you want to get technical) has decent food. The authentic menu is where it's at, but in the event that you can't see yourself eating the organ meats of animals, perhaps you should stick to the more mainstream dishes. They have a fairly good menu with the standard Americanized dishes (General Tso's, Almond Chicken, etc.), great selection of noodle soups, and non-Americanized dishes. The food does tend to be on the milder side. Not even their hot chili paste is not. Not a bad place to go, but there are definitely better places within driving distance.

Peking Express is my go to New York style "Chinese" restaurant in the Lansing Metro. The food is typically priced. They serve the food quickly. But the real win here is in the serving size: an $8 meal gets a you a huge helping of your main dish, rice, crab-rangoon/egg-roll. The dumplings seem to be made in house are vegetarian and are pretty tasty. Can't ask for much more in a "Chinese" take out joint.

First-time here. Very authentic Chinese cuisine, reasonably priced, NO mandatory 18% tipping (which is a very irritating phenomenon in some Asian restaurants near Purdue). The owner (I guess) lady was kind and lovely. I saw some negative reviews regarding the service, but my experience was great. Maybe it's hard to keep up with the service quality when they are really busy... Overall, I would recommend it to those who love authentic Chinese food.
