Always look forward to Heart of America Shakespeare Festival! This years production of The Temptest was fairly entertaining, and had an awesome set/costume design. It's nice to get outside, pack a picnic, and enjoy free entertainment in KC. (They typically accept donations at the entrance, which helps to fund each festival). There's also some food & drink available for purchase, if you don't feel like packing a cooler/basket.

How have I lived in Kansas City for the past 3 years and am just not finding out about this gem!?! Truly a great experience from start to finish and it's free!! My recommendation is to bring a chair and some snacks. Maybe a blanket as well as things tend to get cooler in the evenings. You can also buy popcorn, etc. and wine from food trucks. There was a parody done by students which helped me understand and follow the plot of the actual performance. Then there was a lecture done by a retired college professor who explained the history behind the show. This was hard to find as it was outside what I would call the fair grounds, so I missed the beginning. Then the show, oh my gosh was such high quality. Great acting, costumes, set and even live music. I want my friend from Chicago who is a big Shakespeare fan to come to Kansas City to enjoy this one day. It's worth the trip. Can't wait for next year!

The review is more about the quality of this event rather than the excellence of the performance. This free event, like many other similar ones throughout our country, is a challenge and rebuke to our digital culture that can't SIT and enjoy an ENTIRE play without text messaging. While there's a minority of people who are too enslaved to their devices, too uncomfortable with the silence of their souls to actually put a phone down for an entire performance, the vast majority of attendees are here because they want to enjoy a lovely evening out in the summer. They want to drink food and drink that they packed themselves. They want to give $5 at the door even though no donation is required. They want to enjoy the Shakespearean language that will penetrate enough that at intermission you might ask your friend "what thinkest thou of the play?" They want to go to the pre-show "talk" and "puppet show" where you get some deeper insights into the play and some laughs, respectively. Can't really have a complete KC summer without this great event. Macbeth, this year's play, was done quite well.

I caught the final night's performance of "As You Like It" with a couple of friends. One has gone every year for the past 11 years, the other had gone last year as well, but this was new to me. We got there at about 6 to stake out blanket territory and scored the third row center (behind the reserved section). It was quite warm initially, but as the sun went down this turned into a fantastic open air experience. Food vans were set up in the "lobby" area serving everything from kettle corn and funnel cakes to veggie sandwiches and burgers. We brought our own picnic and a few bottles of wine and were in 7th heaven. This performance was set in an updated time frame, the 60s presumably. The cast was very funny and very good. I loved it and will be going every year. Who can pass up free Shakespeare in the park? I had no cash on me for donations, but a helpful note, they come out with a sign at the end of the show with a text number to send a $10 donation, if you choose.

Shakespeare in the Park is one of my favorite summer time activities in Kansas City and is one more reason why Kansas City is so special. Can't pass up on a free performance! If you love Shakespeare and really want to be able to see and hear, be sure to come extra early to spread out a blanket up front. You're allowed to bring whatever you want: blankets, chairs, food, wine, etc. They have it set up where chairs are required to be in the back while blankets are up front. Depending on the year, performances run almost every day during prime summer time. Pack yourself a picnic, grab a friend, and head to the park for a free Shakepeare performace!

Shakespeare in the Park is one of my happiest memories of Kansas City. Every summer my friends and I would pack up a picnic and head out to Southmoreland Park to see Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet or Julius Ceasar. The stage is always built outside and playgoers are encouraged to bring their own blankets/chairs to settle in the grass. The festival always runs June-July, which is perfect for lounging around in the park. I would suggest getting there early because they tend to get really crowded pretty fast. The plays are FREE, which is the best part. If you're feeling particularly generous you can make a donation to support Free Will, which is the organization that will keep putting on these plays and also allow kids to take part in Camp Shakespeare. It's worth a few bucks to give something back! The Festival is always seeking volunteers for various events. Volunteering for this group is always fun and it's a great way to meet new friends.

I LOVE Shakespeare in the Park. I think outdoor amphitheaters are so much fun, and the park is all green and the weather is great for outdoor events this time of year. Not to mention the plays are always GOOD! Kansas City has some fine actors, and this event always showcases that as well. This is a really fun event to go to with a group of friends and pack a picnic dinner that would make the Barefoot Contessa, Ina Garten proud. I have a soft spot in my heart for Shakespeare in the Park too, because when I attended KCAI's Summer Studio for high school students in the summer of 1995, that was one of the outings they took us on. I believe it was Taming of the Shrew that year. Anyway, it was one of my first outings with the boy who, 15 years later is now my fiancé. Getting to sit with him in the grass on a summer evening is one of my favorite memories of the summer we met. Awwww, a happy ending that I think Shakespeare might actually approve of!

I think this is a perfectly nice festival, and a good way to spend an evening with friends, family, or a great date if you've taken yourself a lover. I have to believe that every person out there already knows if they'd be the type to enjoy seeing Shakespeare, so I won't get into the quality or entertainment value of the show. Instead, I'll just discuss how they as a company handle organizing a large-scale event. It's pretty awesome that HoA is free, and they don't harass you too much for donations as you come in. That being said, come early and secure blanket space, because otherwise you'll either have to sit behind a tree or pony up some money in their "premium picnic space" which I think is about the most irritating thing I've ever done. That being said, if it's worth it to you to pay a chunk of change (like $30 or so) to be able to show up at the last minute and have a baller spot, now you know it's an option. You can bring your own food and drink, which I would recommend. They do sell some of each on site, but it's an annoying process. Can't use money, nope you have to buy tickets. I get why they do that (benefitting off of unused tickets) but it's SUCH a pain. This is especially true with the food truck, as the line is incredibly long and you'll be tempted to give up. I think they need to have one or two more trucks out there. I don't think sales would suffer, but instead I think more people would have an opportunity to spend money. I know that I'm not waiting 30 minutes in line for a sandwich. I like the festival, and I debated pretty hard between 3 and 4 stars, but my gut says to go with 3. If I go back next year and the food lines situation is a little more reasonable, I'll bump up to 4 no problem. Pro tip: Are you a member of the Nelson-Atkins? Just park there for free!

This is one of Kansas City's greatest treasures. I'm reviewing the festival in general and not this year's show(s) as this is an annual festival and they do a different show or shows every year. I started going 14 years ago while I was in college and I have been every year since. It's free (donate $5 at least, $10 if you can....you'd pay $20-40/ticket to see this show in a theater somewhere). You sit on the ground for the most part though there are reserved seats (which I've never paid for). We take a blanket and a picnic basket (or eat dinner at Winstead's down the road just off the Country Club Plaza). If it's not too hot we walk to the park from the Plaza (easy, free parking). You can also pay to park at the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum or get there early and score a parallel parking spot on the road around the park. Take a big pillow or stadium seat so you can be comfy while you watch the show. All ground is hard. They sell refreshments which aren't priced too bad. The kettle corn is fresh. The shows are always good and rank from above average to exceptional in every year that I have gone. I've never not enjoyed the show. Like I tell all of my students, don't be intimidated by Shakespeare. It is easier to understand on stage than in a film or by reading it in your language arts class. Ten minutes in you'll be completely comfortable. This year they are bringing back a two show schedule (2012) with shows on alternating nights. They did it years ago for a while and we'd always go twice. Usually one show would be a comedy, one a tragedy. They stopped for a while as it was expensive and after miraculously funding last years show at the last minute they seem to be in pretty good shape as they are doing two shows again this year. Hopefully the All-Star crowd will find out and hit the festival up while they are in town. I'd say kids middle school and up would enjoy the show and it makes a great way to cap off a trip to the Plaza or art museum if you are a suburbanite making a day trip downtown. I'm a teacher so I take advantage of the summer and I go during the week to avoid a weekend crowd. The shows usually get over close to 11pm so if you work all week, the weekend is a better bet. Check the weather as the show is outside though the best act I ever saw was the first act of Macbeth on a night when thunderstorms rolled in. The second act was rained out but God himself provided the sound effects when the witches were on-stage in some of the most haunting scenes I've ever seen.

As that time of year approaches (the summer and as I will be moving away soon), I tend to reminisce about what makes me love the Kansas City Metro. This yearly free festival is packed with fun, culture, and the enjoyment of fresh air with your loved ones on a picnic blanket. Unfortunately, your furry friends are not welcome. It's fun to pass the Nelson Atkins and see what wonderful things they are building across the street in the park. Every year, for a few weeks, they have an outdoor play for Shakespeare. Yes, in most cases, it's unbelievably hot, but at least it's at night. The actors and actresses do their best to keep you entertained and make the prose that you studied dryly in high school come to life. "Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind." Who really talks like that anymore anyhow? I encourage everyone who lives in the area, or perhaps even tourists, to enjoy this festival. The festival in 2013 will present "As You Like It" in Southmoreland Park, June 18 - July 7, 2013. Come on, come all, frolic away in the park to Shakespeare and munch away on that Kettle Corn.
