I attended my first movie at Stray Cat Film Center today as part of the KC Fringe Fest. If you are old enough to remember The Bijou in Westport, you will have a newfound fondness for Stray Cat. Small and intimate with seating for around 50 i'm guessing. Old theater seats and couches with not much of a slope (if any) so get down front if you're short. Ultra hip lobby with art school vibes which match the type of films they bring in. Stray Cat, I'm sorry I haven't visited prior, I'll certainly be checking your weekend schedules for future visits.

Stray Cat Film Center is a magical hidden gem that aside from showing eclectic film, also acts as a time machine, taking me back to my early 20s when there were more old school indie movie theatres that oozed of charm. This place had been on my radar for some time when my friend invited me to come watch a screening of one of our favorite foreign horror films. I literally could not turn down a screening of little otik (If you haven't seen it and you like dark comedy/horror be sure to check it out). I arrived about 20 mins early, and had no trouble finding parking, which was honestly a surprise on this stretch of Broadway, but I parked, walked in, and was hit with nostalgia immediately at the scent of old school popcorn, and the community of folks that had gathered to watch this movie. I say community because I feel like Stray Cat invites you in, whoever you are, and the folks that are there are just as interested in watching what's on screen, as they are in chatting with others that share their interest in art and film. To me, being now a parent living in the suburbs, it was like coming up for a breath of fresh air to mingle with some folks that I don't often get a chance to visit with in my day to day. The movies are affordable here, I think it was maybe $7? And, they have soda, sparkling water, beer, and plenty of fun snacks available for purchase at the concession. It's very casual, and the folks working here are some of the kindest you'll find in KC. Only thing I'd improve are the seats as they are just as old school as the venue itself, I'm torn on if it lends to charm, or if they could really do with some more comfortable chairs, but regardless this is still a five star venue, and I know I'll be back to bask in a trip back in time.

Stray Cat Film Center is one of the places you're just glad exists. I love the concept of a small, local, artsy hideaway that features small indie films and local artists. I recently attended a small album release party at Stray Cat which felt like an intimate gathering of friends. Don't come in expecting the usual amenities and comforts of a typical movie theatre. Are the seats very comfortable? Not really. Do they recline like they do at all the theatres these days? Certainly not. But what might surprise you is the affordable concession stand with *free* ( (tip encouraged) beverages. The popcorn is microwave popcorn - which is so quaint and cute - but they put it in a movie theatre popcorn bag. They offer vegan popcorn upon request (because they said it was a popular request), and I love that they have that option. Support this local gem when you get a chance. They not only feature indie films, but they host a lot of local events that keep the KC arts scene alive.

They may call themselves the "fifth best movie theater in Kansas City" but they're number one in my heart. I love spending any night at the Stray Cat watching weird indie films and old horror movies. The tickets are always super cheap since they're a non-profit microcinema, and they even have tons of free events. And the best part? Free beer (definitely leave a donation to keep this place going, but it's the thought that counts). Popcorn and snacks cost a few bucks. Get there early to snag a seat on the beat up couch in the front row. Usually plenty of parking on the side streets or on the weird dead end behind the building. Convinced my now girlfriend to be my girlfriend after taking her here to see Cronenberg's Rabid, so I have nothing but good memories of this place. I love the variety of films and events the Stray Cat offers -- so so glad this place exists!

Movies are probably my #1 favorite activity so I love having a fun little indie cinema downtown! The variety of movies is really cool and they have a ton of different genres and monthly series. Tickets are usually $7 or less. We've seen some super niche movies as well as more mainstream stuff. My girlfriend and I loved the sapphic cinema series!! I hope they bring it back! Sometimes the hosts of the movie will bring little treats for purchase or for free - we still dream about the beet brownies we had for a Valentine's film last year! Not all of the movies they show are my taste, but it's fun to see something new every once in a while!
