This is, sadly, going to be a mixed review at best. I SO wanted this place to knock my doors off because it's closer than the other BBQ places in Newark and the service is pretty fast. However the food was just so-so. I wanted leftovers for my son (he's starting to really love BBQ) so I ordered the 1/2 bbq chicken, ribs and pork tenderloin trio...the order also came with fries and rice. the beautiful young lady who took my order could not have been less interested in my order, being helpful, or even speaking...so there goes any star you might have gotten for great (or even good) service. The food itself-a mixed bag. Let's start with the Good...the BBQ chicken was great...really excellent. Meat was juicy and not overdone, the spices were very Latin American and really added a very nice clavor to the chicken. Loved that it wasn't slathered in BBQ sauce, but the cup of sauce they gave me for dipping was delicious and complemented the flavors nicely. I also loved the saffron rice... Now the rest of the story...Pork tenderloin and ribs at a BBQ place should never, ever be hit or miss, they should always be home runs and what I had yesterday was a pretty big strikeout. The ribs were not smoked/cooked long enough. I don't need my ribs falling off the bone, but these weren't even close-way too tough and chewy. The pork tenderloin was overdone and tough (and to be honest, there should have been more for what they charge). And the fries...a soggy mess of unhappy potatoes. Overall, they get two stars only because the chicken and rice was so outstanding, The ambivalent service, the crappy ribs and overdone pork leads to the obvious conclusion-Stick with McWorter's or Dinosaur BBQ and just plan ahead. I won't return to Jersey BBQ Pit and Grill.

This place smells, but not like BBQ. It was too late to turn around though. My co-worker wanted to go here and we were already in the door. If it were up to me, we would have been at Dinosaur. But here's why I will not be going back here: First, the service was rude. I asked the cashier/waitress for an empty cup so I could fill it with water from the soda machine. Her response: "Don't you want a bottle?" My thought was, "if I wanted a bottle, I would have asked for a bottle." But I didn't. I specifically asked for an empty cup to avoid paying for a bottle of water. Call me cheap, but she acted like I was the first person that ever asked for an empty cup. When she agreed to give me one, she never ended up actually giving it to me. Second, and most importantly, I won't be going back here because of the food. My chicken was cold and it didn't look to be cooked in any sauce. The BBQ sauce was in a squeeze bottle on the table. Personally, I'm not a fan of the "add it yourself" method. The fries sucked because they were frozen and unsalted. Honestly, the best part was the saffron rice, which shouldn't have even been served with fries in the lunch combo. Why not offer baked beans or mac and cheese or cole slaw? The one saving grace: it's pretty cheap. My lunch platter was $6.95, tax included, although it disproportionately contained more frozen fries and saffron rice than it did chicken.

This isn't a traditional American bbq, it's more of a Portuguese style bbq which when done right is great. The menu is a hodgepodge of basic fast food i.e chicken fingers and fries to more traditional dishes like paella. Whenever we go here we tend to get the grilled salmon dinner. Salmon,rice, french fries and veg. Generall we'll sub the fries for beans or plantains at no additional cost. The salmon is always cooked perfectly! Nicely golden moist flakey filet of fish, rice is evenly cooked and the beans are well seasoned. The boiled carrots and potatoes are average and usually need salt. They have a house bbq & hot sauce that leaves much to be desired, but isn't really needed. The atmosphere is pretty generic, picnic style table clothes on some tables and booths, but no collective theme. There are 2 tv's although only 1 is ever on. There is ample parking in the plaza, and they offer delivery.

Portion size amazing, chicken was really good, steak skewers also tasty but the ribs I can pass on. Ribs really not tasty, dry and overly cooked. Vegetable really great.

I think my one star is very courteous for my experience with Jersey B.B.Q. Pit and Grill. I mean after all I think the name really suits them. Their BBQ is really the pits. After my workplace was the only thing opened the day after Thanksgiving of this year, I was ecstatic to learn that Jersey B.B.Q Pit was one of the few food joints opened in the area. My coworkers and I decided to venture out and try something new. Light years passed until our food was delivered. Minutes turned to hours which seemed to turn into days and our food was nowhere to be found. We called the restaurant to inquire about our delivery order and we were told that they were on their way. When I looked at the clock it was an hour later. After multiple times of being told our food was on its way and multiple hours of not seeing our delivery we decided to call and cancel our order. The manager insisted he'd take a few dollars off the bill which was an outrageous compromise, which we did decline. After another endless hour of waiting the manager finally told us he would take 10% off our total. It wasn't worth it at this point, but because our work day was coming to an end and a girl has got to eat we took the manager up on his offer. Unsurprisingly the food was cold and tasteless, much like our experience. Even prisoners in New Jersey jails must get tastier food than this. After a deeply disappointing meal, we concluded that Jersey B.B.Q Pit and Grill is not a restaurant that we would want to return to anytime soon.

After a long day at work, I wanted to treat myself to some tasty bbq. A co-worker of mine recommended a good bbq spot that's literally five minutes from my house. So I decided to try it. Besides I love trying out new restaurants in my area. It gives me something to Yelp about ;-) The restaurant seems clean, staff looked professional (well groomed and clean uniforms), and the food smelled delicious. I ordered a half bbq chicken with mixed veggies, fried plantains and tres leches for dessert. I waited a while for my food but its ok as long as its fresh and hot. After about ten minutes, my food was ready. I rushed home, changed and was ready to chow down. The food and dessert were good. It's not the best I had but it was good nonetheless. They deliver locally, if you spend a minimum of $20+ $2 delivery charge. Its a good alternative besides the ubiquitous pizza and Chinese delivery option.

After McWhorter's... it's going to be hard for any BBQ to impress me. My friends and I were starving, and we always pass bye JBP, so we decided to stop by. It's a small-ish place. We decided to order take out. We got the trio platter of ribs, tenderloin, and chicken. Ribs were okay. Tenderloin and chicken were a bit dry. Rice was a bit bland, and the fries were whatever. That same day, I went to McWhorter's and couldn't believe I cheated on it with JBP. Other than the fact that it's so close, I don't think there's another reason I'll be going back.

My coworkers and I ordered delivery from Jersey BBQ Pit months ago. We ordered a whole chicken and full rack of ribs with rice and beans. We waited an hour and it never came. We called them to check on our order and they said it was already on the way. We waited again for another 15-30 minutes, nothing. We had to call at least 3-4 times and every single time, they kept insuring us that it was on the way. After waiting for 2 hours, we wanted to cancel our order. On our last call to them, we told them we did not want the food anymore and at first, the manager offered to take $2 off.. Are you kidding me!? We declined so he finally offered to give it to us for 10% off. Fortunately for them, we were starving so we reluctantly agreed. In retrospect, we really shouldn't have accepted it at all. When the food finally arrived, it was cold. And even though we were so hungry, it wasn't even any good at all. It was bland and it didn't taste like bbq at all. And if you're going to offer delivery service, make sure you deliver promptly and the longest wait should only be an hour. This place is definitely is not worth my time and money. Never again. It is not even worth the one star I'm giving them. There are far way too many bbq places in Newark that are so much better.
