Olmsted was a real letdown.  Despite the hype, it was surprisingly mediocre.
Our server, though incredibly sweet, encouraged us to share plates, which we usually love. But the menu just wasn't designed for it.  Who shares a hamburger?  And unlike other restaurants that cater to sharing, the portions weren't adjusted to our party size.
The "snacks" tasted amateurish, though the main courses were decent.  The atmosphere was equally off, with harsh lighting and barely-there music.  It felt like the chef wanted us to focus solely on the food, which would have been fine if the food was actually amazing.
Honestly, save your money and skip this one.

It is extremely hot here in the summer!! So if AC is something you care about, don't come here as they leave the back doors to the garden open. We sat at the chef's counter and spent the whole time sticky and sweaty.

Otherwise, food is fantastic and the service was prompt and attentive. Very innovative takes on fresh seasonal ingredients.

As other reviewers have pointed out, the gnocchi is to die for (if you like very soft gnocchi). Also really enjoyed the kale + crab rangoon. The sauce in the carrot crepe was a little too salty for my taste and the sweetness of the crepe wasn't quite enough to offset the saltiness. All the salt also competed with the flavor of the clams.

Portions are enormous. My companion and I got 1 snack, 2 appetizers, and 1 entree between us and left super stuffed with another meal's worth of leftovers to take home.

Their back garden is stunning - seems to be a great place to relax for a cocktail or have a little soiree.

Beautiful restaurant with friendly staff, but the food is not it.

Anytime a restaurant has a menu that incorporates cuisines from many different parts of the world, you’re bound to get a unique meal. In the appetizer section, you had options of a Thai som tum salad, potato gnocchi, and watermelon sushi.

I understand creativity in the kitchen, but a more cohesive menu is probably the better move?

We ordered the falafel - very tasty and served with this spicy whipped ricotta. We ordered the som tum squash salad - nothing crazy, tasted like any papaya salad you’d get at a Thai restaurant. The potato gnocchi - basically gnocchi swimming in a cheese soup (no hyperbole). And we shared the chicken - not good. Chicken was lacking flavor, served with undercooked rice and this star anise oil.

The also forgot one of our drinks, which ended up being comped. When we told them about the chicken and rice, they were willing to give us another entree on the house.

Overall, I’d come back here for better weather for drinks and snacks in the backyard. I appreciate the idea, but feel that the execution is lacking.

We have been here couple times, but it’s our first time trying their tasting menu. Food is pretty good, especially the kale with sunchoke. We also ordered extra sesame bread with hoisin sauce, which is phenomenal.
The service could be better. They forgot to bring us silverware at the beginning and I think they might forget that we came to celebrate birthday.

Now, this is FOOD. Olmsted is cute little place in Prospect Heights, with nice decor and good vibes overall. I went during winter, but I bet dining in the garden during warmer days must be very pleasant. The day I went the only option was doing a tasting menu. What an amazing experience. All the flavors were very balanced and seasoned, and it was one of the best food experiences of my life. Thanks Olmsted! Special shout out to the butternut squash and the salmon dishes, simply impeccable.

Edit.: Went back 10 month’s later and thought the restaurant’s new seasonal menu was not up to par with my previous experience. Plus, they are charging 35 dollars more for their tasting menu.
