Came with a girlfriend visiting from San Francisco.. 🥰🥰🥰 this RESTAURANT is excellent. Spicy Garlic Shrimp lunch special was $12.00... I thought it was kind of expensive until the food arrived. Huge shrimp (13/15) with veggies, steamed white rice and won ton soup.... then I order combination chow fun. It was not on the menu, yet they cooked it... I think it was the best Chow fun I have ever eaten. It had the perfect smokey taste, while the noodles ever expertly prepared.... Yes, yes, yes... I would be back

Food was amazing! Best Szechuan food I've had in a long time. If you are in New York City, definitely try this place because it's going to beat your small-town Chinese restaurant by a lot. I recommend the baby eggplant, spicy beef tendon, and soup.

Just had a really lovely dinner here with my dad.  So glad I was able to bring him here as this is the kind of restaurant he likes to go. We came for an early dinner at around 6pm.  Highly recommend coming at around this time before the actual dinner rush starts.

We went a little bit crazy and ordered a lot food for just two people.  We couldn’t help it as we wanted to try a lot of dishes.  We got the Sichuan cucumber salad, steamed pork soup dumplings, sweet crispy fried duck, Yangzhou fried rice, and the shredded pork with sweet miso. The food got to our table super quick!  Couldn’t believe how quickly they made the food.

The duck was prepared for us at the table into four wraps.  While this was fun to watch, I kind of wished I could have done it myself.  I like to pick and choose which cuts of meat goes inside my wrap.  Otherwise, I found the duck to be quite delicious! They used thin taco-like sheets for the wrap instead of the white fluffy bread at other places.

The fried rice was yummy, very filling and the portion was large.  I loved the pieces of spam thrown in the rice with the pork and shrimp.  The soup dumplings were good, but I’ve had it better at other places.  The shredded pork dish was delicious.  The meat was very tender and had a nice coating of miso glaze.

My favorite dish of the night was the Sichuan cucumber salad.  Refreshing, crispy, crunchy and slightly spicy.  Kind of reminded me of Korean cucumber kimchi but the chili used here has more bite and less fermentation.

Big shout out to the staff for being wonderfully attentive.  Whenever I go out to eat, I like to observe how the staff interacts with their customers.  The staff here were on point and were very focused on making sure everyone was attended to. The lady at the table next to me accidentally dropped her chopsticks on the floor and the waiter instantly came running to give her a new one.  She didn’t even get a chance to say “oops”!  They were also very diligent about clearing our table of any unused plates and making sure our water glasses were always kept full.

Overall, we had a great night.  The combination of good food and excellent service will have us coming back.

2019-12-31 Update: Tried the grilled fish. Taste was good but could be more spicy.

Szechuan Gourmet 56 is a reputational restaurant serving Szechuan style Chinese food. Dining environment is awesome and dishes are savory and near authentic with minimal local adaption (not as hot as some authentic Szechuan dishes). Highly recommend if you are around the southern part of the Central Park and need a place to have Chinese food for dinners.

Convenient Midtown Szechuan with some Cantonese and Chinese-American standbys for the uninitiated. Food is quite good and service is polite and tries hard to please but can be uncoordinated with waits for things like serving spoons or your check. Some customers are rude and talk down to the staff which ruins the dining experience. Dining room is modern and open. There is an upstairs. I would come back.
