After reading the reviews I was worried about coming here but I also heard that The Box is iconic and a place everyone should go at least one time so Im glad I did. Luckily the event was sponsored so I didn’t have to pay for drinks nor did I wait outside in the long line outside neither so I avoided the common complaints here. The bartenders were cool. It was loud so I had to yell for them to hear but everything was ok. Inside was cool, different, and had a nice vibe. I could see why ppl enjoy this place, it did feel exclusive. I would definitely come back here and I would tell others to at least visit once. Im not mad at this place.

Headline: Probably way overhyped, fun to try and visit once but I think I don’t need to go back

Details: Of course we’ve heard of The Box as ~the~ club in NYC so we had to try. Couldn’t find out how to make a reservation or guest list so my friend (hot girl) and I decided just to try and get there early. Arrived right around 11:10pm, short line, we were told that if you didn’t have a ticket tonight you weren’t getting in. We went to a nearby spot for some nice dancing for an hour, and came back. The line was still pretty short; after waiting for about 15 minutes, the two pairs of girls in front of us in line were turned away, and my friend and I and the two girls in front of us were beckoned to go in. Not sure why, seems totally arbitrary. No cover, and just an ID check. Got in, completely empty space, drinks were fine (two tequila shots were about $25 each and we asked for salt but they didn’t have any). We stood at the front of the non-reservation section — the shows came on at 1:30am and 2:30am for about 15 minutes each time. The shows were alright: I guess they’re raunchy enough, more going for the shock factor than anything.

I think one of the main problems is the advertising of this place as a club, and to me it seems more like a burlesque / cabaret type of performance night. Before and in between the shows, there’s mediocre house music and also no place to dance, so everyone is literally standing around. After the second show ended, everyone literally got up and left (around 3am). If there was a music and a dance floor, plus performances, I could definitely understand the hype more. Confer somewhere like The Stranger where they have performances and activities and dancing — that place left a much better impression on me.

I hate to say this, but this place has changed. It breaks my heart but as a New York native i have spent years coming to the box. I used to walk up and they would say yes or no based on your vibes….there was NO line out the door. Now, you are lined up with all of the out of state people (no hate) and expected to wait for up to an hour to be “considered entry.” I understand that tourism is part of the economy, but I thought that the box was immune to that. Even the shows have become more muted and less extravagant. I wish the management knew that this is the #1 way to lose business in the long run. Keep this place as a sacred home for all true New Yorkers and the people cool enough to be accepted! It is a privilege to be vibe checked by the box, and now it has become a thing of monetary value. If you want tourism…allow people to feel the privilege of being in a higher end place, even if they are just visiting!  There is nothing wrong with tourism, but use it to your advantage because you are becoming like every other club…and soon you will go out of business because your primary marketing tactic was your exclusivity, not the fake exclusivity manifesting itself as a line out the door.

We have booked this place as a rental and been here plenty of times. But today seemed like a power trip. There is no dress code so they need to stop because the guy with the outta shaped tank top was outta control and got in. Security was being rude and for what. The lady with the Afro SIO asked for our reservation left came back and said no. Why make the reservation take credit card info just to not talk to us. They said we were dressed too casual. And i know NY is about fashion so we spent 10k on clothes to come just to be treated like we wasn’t dressed to impress.
