The Carolina Ballet debuted their 2015/2016 season with Gustav Holst's The Planets, and it was spectacular! I have been wanting to see a ballet by the Carolina Ballet Company since I moving to the Triangle, and after hearing that they would be choreographing The Planets, a symphonic tour de force that is, and I quote, "the repertory of every orchestra in the world and has been the spring board for dances by many choreographers", I knew I HAD to make my move. After VOCALLY performing for the Neptune piece for the Tulsa Symphony many years ago, The Planets will always have a special place in my heart. The Carolina Ballet company was simply magnificent: choreography, costumes and ballet. In addition to the incredible performance, the director of the company had the insight to incorporate the work of Guy Solie, a local Durham metal sculptor and designers' artwork into the seven pieces. Separate, huge, metal sculptured works were created and displayed as the dances incorporated the planets there both literally and figuratively. Not only was I awed by the artists dance performance, but the mastery of visual art added another element of wonder and amazement. Truly a marvelous production, and I look forward to seeing many performances in the future. We say in Section E, Row L, seats 5 & 6, we had a marvelous view and tickets are slightly discounted on the sides, running $37/piece including tax. My only note is that I was disappointed the music for the ballet was not performed live by a symphony, I think that would definitely add to the performance as a whole. However, that note aside, The Carolina Ballet makes for the perfect fancy date night activity or even a flying solo activity, I assure you, once the performance has started, that will be all you can think about.

Be very careful about ordering tickets over the telephone. They are terrible about sending your tickets out. I ordered tickets in July, and I still do not have tickets. Since they had not sent them out, I thought I might change them. OMG, all they could do is try to make money by charging a fee for each ticket , and then try to charge more for a ticket in a lesser seat. They are worse than the airlines. We need a Pete Buttigieg over them to exact fairness. I know that this is probably a management problem, but it is a sad state when poor management overshadows a cultural gem for our community.

Just saw a production of Gustav Holst "Planets". The company is fantastic. Choreographers are talented. Composition is beautiful. I loved every bit of it. And I love that there is complimentary wine at intermission! I'll be returning to see their next production.

Don't bother! The selections were lovely but the execution was.... lacking. There were not one, but two collisions between dancers the night that I attended, and overall technique was a bit wobbly/out-of-step. Intermissions and pauses were frequent and long: something that I appreciate in a lovely venue to stroll around, but this is not that, and it felt like there was as much waiting around as there was dancing. Definitely not "world-class" as another review ambitiously describes it.

We are so fortunate to have a world class ballet company in our city and Carolina Ballet makes it easy for everyone to attend. Tips: ticket prices for the Nutcracker vary depending on location. Last year, tickets for the UNC performances much cheaper. Also, look for ticket deals through News & Observer and coupon books - like Go PlaySave, that schools in the city sell.
