I have not been able to find a rating on Yelp! for this fine eatery that is on the first floor of the large Novant Presbyterian Hospital for quite some time, so am addressing this as a new business. It is inside the main hospital building. My 99 year old dad has been frequently in and out of this hospital so my wife and I have spent a lot of time hanging out for visits and to await lab of physician reports. Our experience with both of our mothers hospitalizations left us high and dry in the facility, relying on vending machines or a cafeteria with limited offerings and what is offered is so healthy that there is little flavor and even the employees go outside to eat. Not so in Matthews. The Cafe is far above the more commonly found skimpy institutional snack bars and cafeterias. They offer a couple of hot table meals for lunch, there is a decent salad bar, beverage options abound and the grill is quite popular. Beverages are refillable, but not for canned or bottled. There are comfortable mini-booths and tables, it is clean and there is a good deal of traffic flowing through to eat-in and to take-out. Cashiers are really efficient, and nice as they remind you that your beverage is refillable. And they serve regular meals in addition to heart-healthy and low cal stuff. For instance, you can get a grilled-for-you hamburger or cheese burger. Yes, there are turkey burgers and bean burgers, but you are not trapped in eating good and leaving hungry. The salad bar does have meats. The hot line has specials occasionally, like chicken livers with onions. Maybe not for everyone, but some creative and delicious plates are offered up. They even have a fresh baked pizza buffet table! So if you are there, look for this cafe. It is so labeled on the direction signs. If in the emergency room, it is a good walk through the main building to get there, but you will probably need a worry break to get away from the emergency room mob. The main hospital lobby, even late at night, is tidy and relaxing. Unfortunately, the cafe is only open from morning until late in the afternoon. Weekends the offerings are more limited, so take a run into it early in your stay. They do a good job here and I am a regular. So is wife who agrees that this is a good place. A-OK
