This building/station is so pretty with all the details of the past it is so beautiful. I bet this would be a great place to take photos or have family photos taken. Overall the center is clean and is easy to find your gate due to the small size. Trains are on time and easy for someone to understand, book and travel. Great prices and a fun way to travel.

Solid 4 star experience in lovely Harrisburg PA. I've only taken the train and not been downstairs to the bus station. Love being able to get to Philly and New York City with ease and comfort. Taxis, busses, and walking to the station are easy. Some shady characters hanging in the neighborhood but mostly safe. Harrisburg is a great place to leave and this is a portal into another dimension...or real city.

Clean, lots of phone chargers, simple to navigate, can easily watch Norfolk Southern operations move about, what is there to dislike? For one, the sketchy characters in the station make it unpleasant to walk around. Two, it is in an interesting part of Harrisburg. Three, you are not able to get on the platform until 10 minutes to departure. It is also not wheelchair accessible. I did not see any elevators or escalators, but maybe I was not paying attention. Get on your train and get on with your travel. Nothing else to see here.

The Harrisburg train station is a beautiful tribute to a time gone by but it is much more than that. It is extremely easy access coming from outside of Harrisburg and for those traveling to Philadelphia or New York it is a comfortable and economical ride. Our son takes the train to Temple in Philly and it typically costs $35-$40. Parking is limited so we typically just drop him off without parking. You will need to find a different station such as Middletown if you need long-term parking. The train station is in a safe area of town and we have never had any issues but still have situational awareness. There can be sketchy people with questionable stories of hardship that can come around as you wait to pick up arriving passengers.

A walk through the Harrisburg Transportation Center (AKA, train station) is a stroll back through time. Unlike many others built by the mighty Pennsylvania Railroad in its monopolistic heyday, this structure in the Queen Anne style, remains a beautiful example of a late 19th Century edifice used by hundreds of thousands of passengers per year. Several fires and building extensions from both ends have kept it changing shape, but it has never lost its charm and modest grandeur. It is one of the Great American Stations according to the non-profit by that name, whose mission it is to help communities discover and develop the economic power of America's train stations. Unlike the neo-classical 30th Street Station in Philadelphia, this red brick three story building has a small, but beautiful concourse leading from the street to the old train shed, one of the few covered track areas in the entire old PRR system to keep people from the elements. The mansard (barn) roof was constructed in 1905 to improve the sightlines of the third floor windows and gables. There is also a whimsical model railway under glass in one corner of the lobby that is perfect for a Christmas reverie. Currently, the building and grounds are owned by Amtrak, and leased to the Harrisburg Redevelopment Authority. The basement housed the Greyhound Bus Terminal, and the third floor, railroad and private offices. There is a news shop and small deli on the main floor. It is on the National Register of Historic Places, and is designated as a National Historic Landmark. With its marble floors and paneled ceiling, the main structure is a beautiful space available for private rental. I was there to pick up my son coming back from Latrobe, PA. On Christmas week, he could only secure a ticket as far as Harrisburg, although his ultimate destination was Philadelphia. What a pleasure to be of service to him and be fortunate to discover the accessible architectural beauty of this public space. It was well worth the drive. PRO TIP: In reading about the station I learned that the term "Union Station," was not as I had thought in honor of the Union during the Civil War, but referenced the fact that back in the day many separate railroads used a common station rather than build separate ones for each company. Thus, "Union" meant an agreement to build, maintain and utilize one set of tracks leading to a collective station.

First of all, I have yet to find the hours of the station posted anywhere, online or on paper, except on the door of the station itself. I do not know when the policy of locking the doors before sunset came into being. On a few occasions in the past I've been delayed there. Staying in the lobby until the next train was not a problem. On Sunday, April 2nd, all trains from Harrisburg to Philadelphia were cancelled. My train was scheduled for 1:00pm. No game plan was in place for people stranded at the station, yet we were expected to figure out for ourselves how to be accommodated until the Monday trains would begin running at 5:00am. The baggage check was closed. Although I could afford an inexpensive hotel, The only advice I was given from a person who did not work at the station was to go to Harrisburg's homeless shelter. I roamed downtown for hours, using every search or app on my phone to find my way to food or shelter. Nothing was up-to-date. I finally found a bar, but it did not have food. I didn't stay long. On the trek back to the station there was no traffic on the street, which at night is not very reassuring. Deserted downtown Harrisburg is strange and eerie late at night, almost like the City of the Damned: so quiet it's actually sinister. During the course of this adventure, I incurred a physical injury. When I got to the station, I waited in front, clothes stained with blood, exhausted, and cold. It would be another four hours until the doors would be unlocked. Eventually, other people arrived. I had a feeling we were comrades-in-arms. If I hadn't made this same trip two to three times a year for the past 35+ years without major problems, I could have credited this to bad luck. I can't. Even taking any lack of good judgement on my part into account, a transportation center in any city needs to be available to stranded passengers. Up until this experience, Harrisburg and its train station were fine by me. However, one star for April 2nd and 3rd, is generous. I sincerely hope this was an isolated incident. By the way, I did make it home to NYC from Harrisburg in just under 23 hours. After a hot soak in the tub and a long nap, I felt better (almost).

What an amazing historic building! Downstairs is the bus station and it seems a bit "newer" but the upstairs, the main floor is amazing just to see it! I can imagine each time we are there, how full it used to be and wonder why we no longer use train transportation like we used to in years gone by. Everyone is usually friendly and you can get a great cup of coffee at the little store inside!

Never really took the train to Philly I always just drive there. When I saw I could go round trip for $44 I thought I'd give it a whirl because between gas, tolls, and parking this was a no brainer. My husband dropped me off and I entered an nearly empty station which was nice because I could walk around and take it all in. The signs for the trains and times were labeled clearly so I knew where I had to be and when. The gift shop had plenty of PA souvenirs, snacks, and food if you needed a nosh. They even sold R&K subs which are my favorite area fundraiser subs. When its time to board they come out and call you in. You line up and head down to the train and get on. No issues at all. My train out was on time and arrived early. My train back was on time and arrived early. My husband picked me up easily and my car stayed safe and warm in Harrisburg. I will definitely travel this way when I can. It was effortless and relaxing.

The Amtrak is always my choice for driving to New York City. The station has few parking spots and is in downtown area - easy access in and out. Staff here is very friendly. The platforms entry is opened minutes before the train departure. One can take the stairs down to the train - elevator is also there at one end of the station. Waiting area is huge - has plenty of seating. There are charging stations throughout. There is also a train display in the waiting area. It also has a convenience store which has necessities, newspaper, snack items and coffee to grab before boarding the train.

Todd pretty much sums up my review. Makes my job easier! (See below). But really, the transportation building itself is always kept very clean. The bathrooms are clean too! There is no line to see a ticket attendant, and even if there was, you won't wait more than 3 minutes at most. You can print out your ticket using the kiosk from your online purchase. There is plenty of waiting space and chairs to wait for your train. A little convenient store is inside the main lobby for drinks, snacks, newspapers, magazines, etc. Most trains leave from Harrisburg and are NYC or Philadelphia bound or both. Never have a problem getting a seat. There is a 10min lay over in Philadelphia on your way to NYC, but I wouldn't recommend getting off the train. The Philly commuters will be entering shortly, and you may not have the same seat when you get back. There are taxis available from the station. A bus is also available. AAA Discount is available on Amtrak if you purchase 3 days prior to your departure. The employees at this station are very courteous and helpful. Definitely agree with Todd - take the train. Maybe higher in price, but you can get to NYC in 3 hours vs taking a bus (where there is a chance of construction, accident, bad weather, etc).
