We visited Susquehanna Art Museum during 3rd in the Burg--which meant admission was FREE (normally $8 per person). Love a good freebie, especially when it comes with extended hours (5-8pm) for those of us who work the classic 9-5. Bonus: free on-site parking right behind the museum at Calder & James. Already winning before we even walked in. Accessibility check? Perfect score. From ground-level parking to wide doorways to a beautiful elevator between the 1st and 2nd floors--this place is wonderfully welcoming if accessibility is a concern. And then...the moment we stepped inside... I was SPEECHLESS. The building itself is a work of art. Bright white, soaring 27-foot gilded ceilings, massive windows, marble floors--it's breathtaking. My delighted giggles echoed through the wide-open main hall (the staff laughed when I realized everyone could hear me going bananas). The original bank vault doors were incorporated into the renovation and are now part of the exhibits, which is both clever and super cool. The first floor is a thoughtful meander of exhibits--artistic genius laid out to explore at your own pace. Photos are welcome (just no flash), and yes, I photographed nearly everything. Upstairs was the real showstopper: FUTURE FOSSILS. The exhibit asks, "If life as we know it stopped, what would future archeologists find?" From skeletal remains to electronic devices encased like relics, it was part haunting, part brilliant, and completely mesmerizing. It felt like walking through a contemporary Pompeii, forcing you to see our current world from a whole new lens. Staff were warm, helpful, and happy to share details about the exhibits or point out restrooms (always important). I'm not an art expert, but this hit all the right notes for me: free admission, jaw-dropping architecture, thought-provoking exhibits, and a super welcoming vibe. Highly recommend checking this out--especially on a 3rd in the Burg night.

On my first visit to the historic former bank housing the Susquehanna Art Museum at this location, I attended a fundraiser, the Seventh Annual A Taste of Jazz, sponsored by St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Harrisburg. Performances included Shades of Blue (Vocal Ensemble, Messiah University), Mike Alexander, saxophone, Cliff Starkey, piano, and The Eric Byrd Trio. It was a delightful evening with Jazz music, a silent auction, light bites, cocktails, and seeing lots of familiar faces. It was also an opportunity to see and learn about Patricia A. Montgomery's current exhibit, Tribute to the Civil Rights Movement: Quilted Swing Coats. The cool aesthetic uses the former steel bank vault, the DeSoto family vault, to display quilted coats. Patricia Montgomery, known as the "Coat Lady," is a textile and installation artist born in Oakland, California, and raised in Hempstead, New York. The exhibit celebrates hidden figures who contributed to the Civil Rights Movement and runs until July 6, 2025.

Such a delight to visit. Packed full of art that makes you think and feel with a cute little gift shop. It's 8$ for an adult and it was absolutely worth it. It's only 2 floors. But they focus on uplifting marginalized voices and that to me is worth every penny and more.

Our first visit to this museum on third st in Harrisburg they do have a charge but it is it to view the feature galleries. We were informed their galleries change every 2-3 months so you can really pick and choose with what interest you! Located in an old bank Bldg the museum is close to not only the restaurants downtown but also to the Broad St. Market there is parking but it can be a little hard to find during the week days! Looking forward to our next visit!

Awesome museum in midtown Harrisburg! It's housed in an old two-floor bank building & has an exposed vault inside. I had the pleasure of visiting a few times while at their old location, and at least twice at their new location. They offer seasonal classes such as metal working, fiber arts, etc. The displays / exhibits my children really liked were comic-related. There was a kids class where you could color & draw in sort of a workshop area that's exposed to 3rd street. Tina, one of the employees is super cool! First Sundays are free to members & open for a nominal suggested donation of $2 per person. Parking next to the museum in a private lot. Mural by Daniel Finch is incredible, going just for that is worth it!

This is the third or fourth time we've visited, and the exhibits are always good. There's usually about five exhibits -- don't miss the ones in the vault or the ones displayed at the side of the first floor. I think it's the perfect size -- you can enjoy your visit and examine the art works in about two hours if you take your time. Lovely space, and the guides are welcoming and knowledgeable.

Excellent museum! The new facility in midtown Harrisburg is in an old bank building that was beautifully renovated with a new addition (that includes a second floor gallery & educational spaces) attached to it. The staff and volunteers are helpful and informative. The exhibits change periodically throughout the year and there is always something new to see. Check their website for special events. Free Off street parking behind the building. Highly recommend a visit (or multiple visits) to this first rate art museum.
