I've been to places that charge dirt cheap prices as well as places that charge a lot (Sakana, Zama, Ogawa, Morimoto, and more). I'm also an amateur sushi chef who has won a sushi competition in the city, so I have a unique perspective. Here I will explain to you my reasoning for giving five stars for supermarket sushi. At Giant, no less. I'm going to tell you that if you dare rate sushi based on the pre-made sushi containers, you should remove your review now. Nobody will take you seriously. :) I recommend rating places based on the freshest versions of items, something that's made to order rather than pre-made because the truth is all pre-made food tastes ordinary and uninspiring. I've walked by Hissho many, many times at Giant. I'd rarely see someone working there and that's usually because I don't go to Giant during the day. My kids and I have purchased various pre-made items over the past couple of years. They were always ordinary and uninspiring. Why the f would people eat sushi this way? For my kids, they don't care. For me, I'd get annoyed eating pre-made sushi. The crunch of the tempura is never there in pre-made sushi. The sushi is cold in some cases. I want room temperature at the very least, not cold. Today I walked up to Hissho with no intentions. I was going to order a Saladworks salad today, but something made me stop in front of the elder Asian man who was preparing sushi rolls. He greeted me and asked me if I wanted to order and I said yes. I wanted a poke bowl with two proteins and he didn't quite understand me. He pointed at the pre-made bowls. "No, I don't want that," I said with a smile. The other chef, a young Asian woman, knew more English and helped me with my order. Shrimp, tuna, mango, avocado, green onions, tempura crunchies, fried onions, pickled carrots on top of a bed of sushi rice topped with ponzu sauce. Okay, let me tell you that this sushi rice is amazing. I placed the above in its own sentence because it really is amazing. It was made perfectly. It's how sushi rice should be made. When you have good sushi rice, bland ingredients taste better and very good ingredients taste great. Everything was fresh and looked like they were prepared that morning. I would even say they have Saladworks beat in terms of freshness because there were no brown spots on the avocado slices. The shrimp were these small little things mixed in spicy mayo sauce. They were surprisingly good. From my first bite to my last, everything was a delight to eat. I've had poke bowls that cost a lot more and they weren't as good as this. I will say... get this exact combination of items if you can and never settle for the pre-made stuff ever again. What you buy freshly made will cost the same as all the pre-made stuff here, so why settle for the pre-made stuff? I hope that when you visit Giant and go to Hissho you will get the same experience I just did with the same delicious rice and all.
