An underrated gem in Charleston, SC. Beautifully situated next to Waterfront Park and the Pineapple Fountain, this free city gallery brings art, history, education and thought together. In its spacious two floors, you never feel crowded. Everyone should visit.

Great gallery, great location just behind the Pineapple Fountain., great admission fee - FREE. I saw the 2021 South Arts prize winners and state fellows. An awesome collection of artists from across the southern region. Two floors of exhibit space, this is an absolute gem of a location for a free gallery in the city.

Looking for something to do at Waterfront Park besides staring at the water and getting your feet wet in the Pineapple Fountain? Why not take a break from all that walking and visit the free admission City Gallery? Until March 2019, the two floors of gallery space house beautiful photographs from a new exhibition, "Southbound," depicting life in the American South from the vantage point of a wide range of visual artists. The second half of the collection can be viewed on the campus of the College of Charleston, but even half of the exhibition is quite impressive. Don't skip the opportunity to view some amazing images showcasing the range and diversity of life in today's New South, beyond the limited scope of what you will see in tourist centered historic downtown Charleston. It's an easy stop to make!

They don't do a big job of advertising it, but we decided to investigate when walking through the park. Building is nice, big, and airy, and admission is free; they also have nice bathrooms. Has nice view of the water and park of course. Not crowded when we were there. They had a collection of photographs/photographers, where each person had photos of their various subjects. I would definitely stop in again, but only if the display was new/updated/different.

I visited the gallery during the Moja Arts festival on a very hot Friday afternoon. They have about 6 exhibits that rotate through the year and the current exhibit is a tribute to Historically Black Colleges and Universities(HBCU's) which was exciting for me as I am a proud graduate of an HBCU. The gallery is free of charge and on this day they were offering light refreshments, but I'm not sure if that is always the case. It's very spacious inside but be warned about the huge staircase to enter through the front and back of the building. The first floor was showcasing the history of Morris Brown College and the next level had art representing many other HBCU's. There is an elevator inside or you can take a short flight of stairs between levels. There is really no parking other than street parking which is limited in the area so it's best to find public parking nearby and just walk over.

I really enjoy visiting the City Gallery at Waterfront Park. They have a well curated art gallery with a rotating series of exhibits that are always worth a visit. This is a great place to visit at no cost and get some art and culture. They also have a good place to cool off and use the restroom on when you are visiting Waterfront Park. I have always had a really good experience here and look forward to seeing each new exhibit as it is revealed. I like that this gallery exists and all of the work that they have done throughout the years.

Visited the Southbound exhibit here today. They were late opening but other than that I enjoyed the visit. The exhibit changes but the venue is very nice and clean. The second floor overlooks the waterfront park walk and has a beautiful view. The staff is friendly and they have clean bathrooms.

i was truly blown away by the works of Ben Timpson and Karin Olah and the guy who made a beautiful sculpture from stirsticks in the center lobby, whose name I forget. Sorry. The internet proved pretty useless when it came to this Gallery and art center. I mean, do they not have their own website? still, a wonderful establishment filled with wonderful art. I think most of it was local, but I tend not to read about the art. really cool stuff here.

Wonderful gallery in a stunning building and a waterfront location but NO Signage! Once you get close to the building on the street side you ll see the tiny brass plaque or perhaps there is some hidden sign. But study a picture of it and it looks like a large white contemporary office building. Inside are always wonderful exhibits of varying mediums. If you come for an opening usually Saturday nights watch dusk arrive over the water from the second floor. Shows change frequently. Sometimes the artist will actually be working on site or assembling their work and open to a little chat. Lobby Mayor Riley while he's still around for a sign.

Don't let the poorly designed website fool you- this place is awesome! Basically, it's a giant, free art gallery right on waterfront park with rotating exhibits. They switch out pretty often, and there is a wide variety when it comes to the quality and style of art. You can just go inside the front or back doors (the back door opens to the park, the front door opens to Prioleau) and explore the space, and no one will bother you, and it's air conditioned, and there are bathrooms. Just keep your voice down when you go inside, it's a quiet, peaceful space!
