In a city that claims to love music, it seems that it only likes certain kinds (mostly one kind?). The opera has had disappointing crowds each time I've gone, which is really too bad, because the opera here is doing some really interesting things and producing some great productions. This past season, I went to all but one of their operas. In October 2017, I went to Tosca (twice actually). Tosca is Puccini, so this opera was classic and traditional and beautiful (and really sad, of course). In January 2018, I went to Hercules vs. Vampires, which was a 60s cult movie set to a new operatic score and sung before a large screen playing the film - it was wildly fun and funny. And in April 2018, I went to Susannah - a more modern opera, sung in English, and set in East Tennessee; it's described as a "folk opera." For this last opera, I went with a friend of mine who had never been to an opera before, and we both really enjoyed the production! In three operas I saw over the course of a single season, the Nashville Opera blew me away! This past season was a great mix of traditional and modern and playful. It feels very much like they are trying to be a modern opera for a growing, youthful city, so I hope that more people give the opera a try during the upcoming season. It's more varied and interesting and entertaining and beautiful than a lot of people might expect. Keep up the great work, Nashville Opera!

I am sure that this review will be upgraded to 5 stars within the next 6 months as I finally plan to check out a few of their upcoming events and shows. However, what I can give feedback on is the absolutely beautiful facility they have in Sylvan Park... WOW! I had no idea that this modern HQ was behind Climb Nashville and the Nashville Ballet all this time. Once you turn the corner, you can't miss the large and contemporary offices. I met with their Marketing Manager Andrea Smith who gave me a tour and filled me in on what they have in the pipeline for this season. From light-filled rehearsal space (which can double as an interesting event space, for all of you party planners) to the costume warehouse, I was a kid in a candy store. The most impressive thing for me is that the Nashville Opera yearns to grow their audience by infusing unique and fun elements into their shows such as the Western Wear Contest for the upcoming show of The Girl of the Golden West or Opera @ Dyer Observatory - Opera on the Mountain coming up in the Summer. Picnicking and opera music? Yes. Please. Don't count out the Nashville Opera as a stuffy institution because you'll miss out!

I've been to two operas at the Nashville Opera now with varying experiences. The first, The Marriage of Figaro, I enjoyed immensely. It's difficult to not enjoy Mozart, even at the collegiate level, so perhaps I'm giving the Nashville Opera too much credit. However, I found their Prima Donna quite impressive and I generally liked the production values. But the second show, The Girl of the Golden West, shared and empathized the main weakness of the first show: a tendency for the orchestra (the Nashville Symphony Orchestra) to overplay the signers. This is a big problem for an opera. Overall I found The Girl of the Golden West to be a disappointing production. The Prima Donna gave a relatively weak performance, though her male counterparts had fine strong voices. The art director made a series of horrific decisions regarding a digital backdrop that periodically showed large stills of the main characters and ridiculous animation. Some of the digital scenery also made no sense and appeared grainy. I couldn't believe I was seeing this in a professional production instead of in a 1980s Nintendo game! Then, the subtitle person made some poor decisions--in my opinion--about what to put up when they shouldn't have. For example, in an Italian opera about American West, when the actors start speaking in English you don't need to put subtitles in English up. It's silly and distracting. I found many other unnecessary subtitles put up that were distracting and superfluous, particularly in regards to lyrics and chorus background babble. The construction of the Nashville Opera's theater lacks some sense. We sat in the center of the back top balcony and the spotlights shined on our laps. Not good. I also suspect that some of the orchestra's cover-up of the singers had to do with poor acoustics, though not entirely. Then, if you're wearing heels, try not to sit in the upper balcony. The stairs are treacherously steep and there aren't enough elevators servicing the multiple levels. So, overall, I think four stars is far too high of a rating for the Nashville Opera. I'm grateful to have an opera of this quality (let alone a professional opera at all) in this part of the country, but let's be sensible. The Lyric Opera in Chicago gets four stars. The Met gets five stars. This gets three. PS-I was also disappointed that the free Nashville Opera magnet promotion from Yelp had never been heard of by the souvenir people and they did nothing to help me out. Boo.
