I had the pleasure of visiting Traveller's Rest on a sunny October afternoon. There are layers of history here, with very knowledgeable guides. Our guide, Hannah, was an personable, engaging storyteller who could answer any questions. I appreciated that the tour gave a full picture of the history--good, bad and ugly. Recommended!

Travellers' Rest is NOT a hotel as you may think from the name, so do not call them asking to book a room! This historic plantation house may have some ghosts anyway so I'd suggest going with the Omni instead when you're in Nashville. Travellers' Rest is the former home of Judge John Overton and his family. He was an advisor to Andrew Jackson, a judge for the Superior Court of Tennessee and known also as one of the founders of the city of Memphis. A visit here is a step back through different eras of time with a large emphasis on it's presence particularly during the Civil-War era. It was at one point in time a tobacco plantation with enslaved laborers and during the Civil War was the location headquarters of the Army of Tennessee. It was only $10 for admission to the grounds and $2 more if you desire a tour of the plantation home so we each paid the $12 and certainly got our money's worth. We were told that people generally spend 1.5 to 2 hours here which we did end up spending. We, a party of 3, essentially got a private tour of the home for over an hour as our tour guide went into a lot of detail explaining the history of the house, the family who lived there and elements of the Civil War. The tour guide recommended before the mansion tour that we view their exhibit hall to learn more first which really did enhance the tour after we were educated by a well-done and comprehensive video about Traveller's Rest. The plantation house itself is interesting but the tour really brings it to life when learning about its previous occupants. We asked several questions on the tour and the tour guide knew the answer to everything we asked. I was really impressed by her level of knowledge. The tour ended at a house with an exhibit on slavery. None of the original slave quarters still stand but the exhibit does inform on the names and ages of the people who were there because of detailed records that were kept. Overall, an interesting visit. Any history buff would certainly enjoy it although at times for me the tour almost was an information overload. The grounds are beautiful and there seem to be numerous weddings and events held here. Staff are great here and the educational component is well-done.

I have toured many of the Civil War era and historical sites in the greater Nashville area. This one is interesting due to its connection to the bigger historical picture it is related to. John Overton was BFFs with Andrew Jackson. So there's a lot of cool stuff tied to that. He is also related to the Cheek and Harding families... the other Nashville big hitters of the day. We took the guided tour, which I recommend. Though I wish our guide spoke a little less about the physical house and its modifications and more about the Overtons. John Overton didn't marry until he was in his 50s. He was short in stature. But ultimately married a woman/widow who was 6 feet tall. Make sure you hear about the "proposal." The property is beautiful and serene. They are honest about the role that slaves played and you can enter former slave quarters. If you can only do a few historical sites, this one ranks below the Belle Meade Plantation and The Hermitage for me. But it is an interesting afternoon.

This was one of the top 20 places or so to recommended to visit in Nashville as said by traveling websites. If you're looking for a reasonably priced tour, this is it. In simplistic terms, this is a historical site of Andrew Jackson's BFF (Judge John Overton) home. If you visit The Hermitage, you will realize it once took 6 hours to get there by horseback. If there is anything I took from the tour, it is how much people loved wallpaper in the 1800s. Heating / water was not available and the house was considered huge for its time. Overton's wife and him apparently had a huge height difference. The tour was intimate ( there was only 5 of us excluding the tour guide) and available only during certain hours so make sure you plan your trip/ arrive appropriately. Outside of the tour, you're free to explore the small gallery which gives you an idea of slavery on the plantation, civil war, and Overton's life. It was interesting to find the list of his slaves and where the slaves lived, as well. I spent about one hour here and found the tour very informative. I ended up going to The Hermitage after to gain more insight on Jackson's life and after learning that he was more risk taking (the weather wasn't ideal) and raised cotton vs. Overton.

The oldest house you can tour in Nashville going back to the very late 1700s. An amazing array of history. This location was home to Native American people going back way before then. There are some of those archeological artifacts on display. The main house includes an excellent tour covering the different rooms and a bit of the history of the area and the original family who built and expanded the house. The area is also an important piece of both civil war history and presidential history with the owner being a close friend of Andrew Jackson's. Many very interesting period furniture pieces decorate the house. At one point their was an interesting cup under a glass cover and the tour guide said it was a cup used to celebrate the victory by Jackson and Lafitte at the battle of New Orleans. The history here is very fascinating and quite the learning experience. Keep in mind I took 4 different classes on American history in college so I love history. A marvelous representation of 1800s life and the struggle families faced during the reconstruction period. I would definitely recommend this as a must see place. Note they also have an amazing newer barn here for events like weddings.

Been wanting to go for a long time. Chad at Travellers Rest did not disappoint. Very knowledgeable about not only the family history, but history of the property as well. We were able to see the house decorated for the holiday time appropriate for the period and got history on 12th night. A nice visit for anyone interested in the history of Nashville and some surprising twists. Just really wish there was better signage cause if it wasn't for Google maps I would have been driving in circles

While on vacation we were looking for something to see that was about some history of Nashville. We came across the Travelers Plantation. The cost was $12 per person for a guide to take you around the grounds and inside the home. Totally worth it. There is a small museum and gift shop to look through before you head out to the tour. While in the museum there is a video and this gives you some back ground information and is very helpful when you take the tour of the home. Our guide had so much information about the history of the grounds and the home. We were pleasantly surprised how the home and those that lived there helped so many people. This tour takes about hours to go through the area and you could spend another hour or so, on your own. Easy to find with gps and good amount of parking

My trip was nearing the end and had opted to tent a car to check the sights outside of downtown. And this place was on my way back around to town. The site is small, compared to its originally 2,000 acres back in the day. Now a days most is residential housing and highways on the other side. Not much here was preserved other than the structure of the house, the smokehouse and maybe the gardener/service staff quarters. Though there are interesting time-period pieces in the property, the tour itself could have been more composed. Not trying to knock on our tour guide, but just as constructive criticism: learn the facts. Most times her answer was that she didn't know or it had t been discovered yet so she said her facts were not all accurate.. The history of the family and the house are interesting, but could be narrated in a better fashion. (In my personal opinion). It's cool to check out nonetheless

I discovered this place actually from the signs while driving along I-65. I've long been a history buff and was interested in what role Nashville played in the Civil war. And so, I came to Traveler's Rest. Admission to Travelers Rest was a cool $12, I believe, which was the full guided tour. There is a self guided tour option as well for a lesser fee, but since I was there, I wanted the grand experience. I learned why they called this place Traveler's Rest, but it had always been a private residence for Nashville's most prominent citizens at the time, Judge John Overton. He was the confidant and best friend to President Andrew Jackson, the Tennessee Supreme Court judge, and founder of the city of Memphis, TN. Judge John Overton lived here with his wife and many children at Travelers Rest during the Civil War area circa 1830's till the 1860's, but the homestead had been here earlier than that. They call this place Travelers Rest when the family started to accept random people traveling through Nashville a place to stay - like a bed and breakfast back in the day. Tennessee was the last state of the USA to join the confederates in the Civil War and that judge John Overton and his family were confederate sympathizers. The tour went through a small modern museum exhibit, complete with a short 15-20 minute video explaining Travelers Rest and the history of the Civil War. It was interesting to see the exhibit, the quotes/information written, and the artifacts that were displayed. Traveler's Rest is located off the I-65 at 12245 Main Street in Nashville, TN, tucked away in residential surroundings. They have free parking as you approach the admissions office and gift shop. I imagine that most days they get their fair share of people who are interested in Traveler's Rest. They accept credit cards, which is always a good thing, as well as cash. The main residence of judge John Overton and his family was quite large for the time period. I was told by the tour guide that no photographs can be taken while inside the house and no touching. She was kind of strict about these house rules. Almost everything inside the home was pretty much authentic and well preserved to the current day. It was interesting to see how people lived back nearly 200 years ago. This home was pretty extravagant during the 1800's, although it seemed rather very basic now in 21st century terms. It was cool to also discover the slave quarters, where many slaves were housed in tight quarters and given very little liberties and freedoms during that time. Anything and everything seemed to be a luxury to them, but slave labor during these times helped develop the Deep South economically and socially during the civil war period. I also got to see other minor structures inside the property, including the campfire, the well, and the smokehouse. I believe the smokehouse is where the slave labor would do all the cooking and other household chores there. There probably have been a small plantation nearby that helped the judge and his family financially during these times. The main guided tour was that of Judge John Overton's primary residence and that the guide told me about the slave quarters, which was the new and exciting exhibit they had recently erected. The thing that interested me the most about the slave quarters was the chart of the slaves. They wanted to document the names of the slaves, how old approximately they were, when they were born, and any other pertinent information related to them. The slaves seemed to live the harsh life back then, but that's the sign of the times and the culture and stigma they had to endure. For the most part, I did learn quite a bit from the local history that stems from the battle of Nashville. That and Judge Overton gave room and board to any one who wanted to fight for the confederate cause. It's quite nice to have found this place on an interstate signage rather than on TripAdvisor, of at all places on the web. Do yourself a favor, if you love history and want to learn more in Nashville's roll in the civil war in 1860 come on down! It's definitely well worth the stop during those long road trips by car! 5 starts! Support local! A++
