# Bee Dumpling – Authentic Asian Comfort Food in Austin, TX

(Note: I write Facebook reviews for residents of Turner's Crossing, a new development in Buda, as we all learn about good places to dine in Austin.) ------------- I'm going to write this review while the memory of the great food we finished only minutes ago still lingers on my taste buds. Turner's Crossing neighbors highly recommended this place after trying it recently. Being a couple of foodies, wife Karen and I were anxious to give it a shot, considering we have not been at all satisfied with the Chinese restaurants we have sampled so far in the area. I think it's pretty sad when the best Chinese food we have had since moving here about two years ago is dished up at a buffet, the East Buffet at I-35 and William Cannon. See my earliet review of that place. We have been there at least five times. Note that if you Google One Bite Dumpling to check out the directions and the menu, you are redirected to the website of Bee Dumpling, which is apparently its actual name now. The restaurant itself is still adorned with a large sign that says One Bite Dumpling. Until they change the name on the building, I will refer to it as One Bite Dumpling. It is located in a strip mall at the southeast corner of the Manchaca Road intersection with William Cannon. The twin strips of parallel shops run perpendicular to Manchaca, so watch carefully for an entrance as you near the intersection. One Bite Dumpling is a spacious, comfortable and clean eatery with an extensive menu of goodies, many of which I have never tried. I grew up eating Chinese food on a regular basis, and almost every restaurant my family went to specialized in Cantonese style food. Since then, I have also become fond of Szechuan cooking, which is different and can be much spicier. After looking at the menu, I asked Oscar our waiter what Chinese cooking style was featured but he did not know, just said it was likely a mix of various styles. The menu was not specific. For my first of what I expect will be several visits to this place, I picked the chicken chow mein ($12.99), partially because ithe menu photo looked similar to the Cantonese chow mein I had ordered my whole life. Oscar pointed out that the portions are generous. He wasn't blowing smoke, because I took about a third of my dish home. It will make a nice lunch for Karen or me, depending on who gets to it in the refrigerator first. My chow mein was definitely not the same as Cantonese style, which I always enjoy, but I relished this change of pace. It was tasty, served piping hot, and satisfying. Big chunks of chicken were tender and coated with a delicious sauce. Karen, who had never eaten Chinese dumplings before, went with an order of the crab meat soup dumplings ($13.99). Interestingly, Oscar the waiter noted that Karen's order contained sausage, which I guess he does because some diners have an aversion to pork. I'm surprised that little cautionary note was not on the menu. Karen's dish was also steaming hot, and she carefully slid a large spoon beneath one dumpling to try it. She immediately nodded approvingly, so I knew we had a winner. Check out the menu online. Dumplings, especially soup dumplings, appear to be a lot more popular in Chinese restaurants in the Austin area then they were in the upper Midwest where we hail from. Karen graciously allowed me to sample one of hers, and it's something that I will be likely ordering the next time. We were also intrigued by one of the appetizers, labeled salt and pepper squid ($12). We vowed to include that in our dinner on our next visit. The restaurant has a pretty good mix of tables with comfortable chairs and the usual booths. Service was extremely efficient. We were also grateful that the temperature inside was comfortable, and sweaters or jackets were not needed like so many restaurants where they only have two settings for the air conditioner: Arctic blast, or off. We had a chance to enjoy a pleasant conversation with Oscar, who quickly commented on my Ohio State cap when we entered. In the first few minutes, he explained that he studied a year in Columbus at Ohio State. He later spent some time at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, and was a big fan of the state of Ohio. Of course, that was enough reason for me to give him a bigger tip. He spoke fine English with a thick Russian accent because his family came from Kyrgyzstan, formerly part of the Soviet Union. I was surprised at the heavy accent because he was born and raised in Chicago. Nevertheless, he is an affable chap and an excellent waiter. Ask for him if you decide to try One Bite Dumpling. The place is well worth the short drive from our neighborhood of about 20 minutes or so. After only one visit, we already have this restaurant among the top half dozen places in our rotation of eateries.

Food was delicious. My noodle soup bowl was definitely a favorite. The flavor of the broth was sooo good! I'd order the broth alone if it was on the menu. Portions are large and not what we expected for such a reasonable cost. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Big hit with the family.

I went here with a friend 2 weeks ago and was extremely disappointed. This location used to be Hao Hao, which had excellent Chinese & Vietnamese food with excellent service. My friend ordered the pork buns as well as the seafood dumplings and I ordered the chicken and corn dumplings. My friends pork buns came out first. There was more breading than there was meat. It was not tasty at all. Something else but of dumplings arrived long before my friend's order, which is not good service. She just set the plate down and took off. We didn't even know if the dumplings were for me or for her. The presentation was not good and when I summoned the waitress, she didn't know which dumplings they were. Usually dumplings come with a little dish for soy sauce And no dish was provided. I had to ask for one and then go ahead and dive in to see if they were my dumplings. They were. I do believe they were about the worst dumplings I've ever tasted. When the waitress finally returned and saw that I had barely touched my food, she asked me if everything was OK. I told her no. To their credit, she did offer to replace it with a different item, but after trying the pork buns, I told her no thanks. She did not offer to refund me even though I only had one out of the 10 dumplings but did offer ice cream. I will admit that was the one thing I liked. She also provided ice cream for my friend. My friend and I will not return. Also, it took forever for the waitress to come back to give us our check. I miss the service and food that I got when it was Hao Hao.

There aren't a lot of Chinese food options here in S. Austin so I was excited to check this out but was met with disappointment. The food is overall ok but it's not a place I would go back to. I would rather drive a bit further north. We got the black pepper beef udon, scallion pancake, and soup dumplings. Black pepper beef udon is alright with rice but by itself is too saucy and peppery. Scallion pancake is good but is small. Honestly, the soup dumplings I can get at Costco taste better. We waited a while for these too. It's a new restaurant so hopefully it can improve but I probably won't be going back anytime soon.

Met a friend at One Bite Dumpling which is Austin's go-to spot for authentic, handcrafted dumplings and Asian comfort food. They specialize in freshly made dumplings, flavorful noodle soups, sizzling stir-fries, and delicious dim sum. I was greeted promptly on arrival and the staff accommodated my request to be seated at a booth. They have plenty of searing in the dining area with both booths and tables. There is a window in the kitchen where you can watch the dumplings being prepared. Their Chinese cuisine features high quality ingredients and bold flavors. Ordered the pork soup dumplings that were made fresh using traditional cooking techniques and served in a basket with an order of 8. The waiter removed the lid of the basket and you could see the steam come out. There was a side of vinegar and chili oil on the table for dipping sauce options. Also ordered the sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf. The rice was very flavorful with a mixture of sausage. They were fun to unwrap and then enjoy eating with chopsticks. They had several specials including the crispy plum shrimp had a balanced sweet and savory flavor. The shrimp were butterflied and fried and you have the option of eating the shell which had a very crispy texture with a nice flavor. The entree was served with rice and was a good portion size to split. Overall had a great experience trying this new establishment and they offer both dine in and take out options. I am excited to come back and try other items on their menu.

Simple and delicious. I like both the quantity and the quality of this place. The Mongolian beef's are amazing and the rice smells nice too.

We got soup dumplings, sticky rice with lotus leaf, and shrimp cooked in plum sauce. The soup dumplings and sticky rice were flavorless. The shrimp was probably my favorite item. However, if dumpling is in the name of the restaurant, I would've expected more out of the dumplings. Glad I tried it to check it off my list but probably won't be going back.

Came in for dine in and this place doesn't disappoint! The dumplings are clearly handmade and you can even watch the team making them through a window. The pork soup dumplings were the star. They were super juicy and packed with flavor. I dipped them in vinegar and chili oil and really recommend it. The beef roll was sweet, savory, and had a nice crunch. It is very filling so recommend sharing. I also tried the spicy beef noodle soup, and it delivered that numbing, Sichuan style spice I love. It was spicy but was still balanced and so tasty. The whole place felt inviting and lively, and the food quality really impressed me. There are so many other things on the menu I didn't get to try so I'll absolutely be back soon. This place is a must-visit!

HIDDEN GEM ALERT!! The food was AMAZING. We ordered the soup dumplings, spicy beef soup noodles, beef roll, and kumquat lemon tea. All of it was wonderful. Everything tasted homemade. It is one of the best asian restaurants in the south austin region (we don't have as many asian spots in the south) Our waitress was very kind and checked on us very often. The ambiance is casual and welcoming. WE WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK!! So many other things on the menu I want to try!!

We ordered a little bit of everything at One Bite Dumpling -- bacon fried rice, chicken chow mein, beef with peppers, udon soup, steamed soup dumplings, barbecue bao, Kung Pao chicken, and orange chicken. Every dish had its own highlight, but the bacon fried rice and the orange chicken stole the show. The rice was smoky, savory, and full of flavor, and the orange chicken had that perfect balance of crispy, tangy, and sweet. For the portion sizes and flavor, it's honestly a great value for your buck. The steamed soup dumplings were another favorite -- thin, delicate wrappers with piping hot broth inside that made every bite feel like comfort food done right. Everything came out fresh and hot, and you could tell the kitchen really takes care with each dish. On top of the food, the staff made the whole experience even better. They were super sweet, welcoming, and attentive -- checking up on us often without ever being overbearing. The restaurant itself was spotless, and you could feel the team's energy and pride in their work. Honestly, I'm surprised there aren't more reviews for this place or more people talking about it. One Bite Dumpling deserves way more attention because it's a hidden gem in Austin. If you're looking for amazing food, friendly service, and a clean, welcoming environment, don't sleep on this spot -- go check it out!
