Christmas at the Carrilon Concert December 2007 Well the chorus was excellent as always. I am awed by people who sing well. That part of the concert was great - but the Christmas concert this year (this is the first year I have been to their Christmas concert) was not good. Like I said, the chorus was great, but their guest artist was a "scoopy" praise singer. If you are a singer, you may know what I mean by scoopy - sliding into the notes instead of hitting them right on - not a clear voice either. That I could forgive if I liked the music. Some of the (more traditional Christmas and some rock) songs were nice and the interweaving of different songs was very cool. If you are into Christian Praise type music - then this is for you. I didn't like it at all. There is plenty of great Christmas music (traditional and modern) and this was not it.

Christmas at the Carillon 2008 The concert was brilliant. I got chills several times. It was the first time I'd seen Conspirare and I'm definitely hooked. Lots of interesting arrangements, even a Madonna song, all precision singing. Eliza Gilkyson was cool. The crowd gets zero stars for being loud and distracting. Lots of coughing and heavy breathing.

seeing a live performance of Rachmaninoff's Vespers has been on my bucket list since i was about 11 years old. It is an incredibly challenging and incredibly beautiful piece. What luck i thought to have it performed by a Grammy winning group here in my home town!!! So excited about that i did a sound check at the venue(St. Martin's Lutheran Church) to find the best seats and bought an entire row worth of tickets at no small expense to get the maximum enjoyment out of the once in several lifetime experience to share with my family. But this what i got instead... Constant irritation of people chatting and whispering to one another. And in city this size you would think there would be culture enough that people would turn of their cell phones... oh hell no. there were 7 cell phone rings (some on vibrate which is just as annoying in a venue that you can hear a pin drop) during the performance. The worse part is that 3 of the rings came from the SOUND GUY!!!!!!! At one point the conductor stopped the entire concert and glared at the sound guy for 3 of the most uncomfortable minutes of my life, during which you heard people digging their phones out of their purses and turning them off. A point of pure euphoria shattered to bits has now ruined a great piece of music forever due to above being forever etched in my mind. No apology can make up for what was lost that evening, unless they would perform it again for those who truly loved that piece.

Edie did not attend the same concert I attended! Not possible! Or perhaps the genius of Craig Hella-Johnson protected the group and it's admirers by not selecting you into the company? You sound like a bitter woman (or man) who has suffered rejection and doesn't want others to experience the glorious, uplifting, soul nourishing bravura of Conspirare. The group - including the brilliant soloists-- are a treat that will be a hallmark of anyone's holiday season.

How can this premiere Grammy winning choral group be rated with less than 5 stars? I've known Craig Hella Johnson for at least 20 years. Having been to quite a few of the Conspirare concerts over the years, this choral group has never failed to excede my expectations! I am impressed by the professionalism of the singers, their dedication to providing the best quality choral performance possible, the melodic harmony with voices that meld together so well that they sound as one voice. Their repertoire, especially during the Christmas concerts, is excellent, blending musical styles that one would not think possible in such an elegant manner. Their performance and CD of Russian sacred music is of the highest quality, for which they received a well deserved Grammy in 2015. Conspirare is truly an Austin jewel. Maestro Hella Johnson's own composition honoring the late Matthew Shepherd truly moved me to the most profound depths of my heart. May Conspirare continue to inspire and augment our souls as they conspire together in one song. Beautiful!

For the last four years, I have been amazed at the talent and possible genius of Craig Hella Johnson. How does someone make a quilt of music from this genre and that and make it sound like they were born to be together. Conspirare is a true gem of Austin.

This group of fantastic performers may vary in size greatly but is always excellent. Craig reaches out to the community in many ways, sharing his music and directing abilities with children, convicts, and all of us in between. The music performed varies but is always extremely well done. Johnson's spiritual sense of human sharing and creating beauty shines through everything he does. He unites and guides, bringing joy and just a touch of the divine to each listener.

My first Conspirare concert was pure joy from start to finish. The singers' lovely voices were only part of it; there was a spiritual quality to their cameraderie that made the whole thing transcendent. I loved the artful blend of classical and modern tunes, all connected by the themes of love and incarnation. So grateful for the experience.

I wanted to leave after the first 15 minutes. I had been looking forward to going to a Conspirare concert for a long time, and I guess I picked the wrong one to try. We attended the Christmas Concert with Mela Sarajane Dailey and Matt Alber. First, I'll start with the choral group itself. What a beautiful choir--strong voices and energy. When the choir sang and swelled, it filled me with such bliss. Unfortunately, that only happened about 7 times in the entire concert. Several solos by choral members ran the gamut from touching to humorous. A few (very short) songs, including an African spiritual brought some life to the boring program. They could be easily understood without looking at the program. The best song was a complex song called "What if" that let them show the talents of the choir members with little involvement from the two guest singers. The rest of the time, though, the chorus was left to stand there, sometimes swaying (probably out of boredom), looking at the two guest singers do their duets and solos. The guest artists were so-so. I thought that Alber's voice was whiny and completely overpowered by the classically trained Dailey, reminding me of a poor quality country and western or folk singing, but really just milk-toast. Dailey herself had a few high points, but when singing the operatic solos was very hard to understand. Finally, the arrangement.. oh, it was so boring. The first "chapter" could pretty much have been better served by Matt Alber karaoke session...at least there would have been some life to the songs. It started with a drizzle and continued with a drizzle. The arrangement somehow turned Chet Powers, Sunny McHale, and even John Lennon into Musak, dripping along at the same, slow tempo. My thought on leaving the auditorium was, "I don't get it." Why not let the choir sing? Why not let them show all they've got? Why hire two individuals so the choir can stand around or serve as mere background singers? I get the whole solo thing and the narrative quality of the choral arrangement, but it lacked variation. Send Matt packing. Send Ms. Dailey packing. Let the choir sing!!
