So it stands to reason that as some spaces don't work as well, they'll sell off or try something new. And it is with no small sense of irony that bar that years ago was known as The District (and since intermittently as other things) has come back around to its beginnings. Albeit with a fresh layer of new paint and a fledgling mini-patio, the District is working on a re-imagining. The flung open the doors here recently for the opening of the new concept, and it was as you might expect: lots and lots (and lots) of bodies crammed into every nook and cranny, lines seven deep for drinks, and the full frontal DJ sonic experience. I didn't end up staying long, but was there long enough to decide that the new bones of The District are solid, the aesthetic potentially worth a return stopover. And so it is that my three star tome is somewhat incomplete. At least, until I turn up and revel in this place, glass in hand, and, albeit perhaps, my elbow not in someone's back.

Now known as District 301 Bar, tonight was its grand opening. If you're familiar with Betsey's Bar, the same owners have revamped the adjacent bar and opened its doors to Austin. I've been here a couple times during the last few weeks, even before the official grand opening. I know the owner through my friends, and after I met him in a state of inebriation at least twice, I finally met him stone cold sober just a while ago. The owners are very nice, and they run a good bar. Aesthetically, its a lounge-y type place; full bar, booths, some tables to sit at. Outdoor seating is limited to three tables up front, where you can smoke. If you're desperate for a cig and it's full out there, you can always walk through the narrow passageway to get to Betsey's and smoke over the railing. The bartenders are pretty and friendly (ask for Kat, she's my friend), and if she's off that night the other ones will take good care of you. The opening tonight was packed. Free vodka and perhaps free Jameson (a sponsor) was offered for a fixed time, so as soon as my social justice church meeting was out, you know I was there. A couple people had mentioned free appetizers from the Belmont next door, which were conspicuously absent, although I could understand: it was a pretty large crowd to feed AND liquor up. Getting a drink tonight was a pain in the ass with all the people, but its usually not. The crowd was what I expected; mostly white twenty-somethings with the luxury of going out on a Wednesdsay night. There was a smattering of self-important tools with their dress shirts with the sleeves rolled up and their entry-level C-class Benzs, but where aren't these guys? The women were dressed very well (especially my fabulous coworker and partner in crime for the evening), with the occasional "cougar" fishing for the aforementioned d-bags. All in all, what I expected from a straight crowd. The DJ (I forgot to get his name) for the evening played relevant, 96.7-type music. I asked around for other people's impressions and they ranged from "Didn't this used to be something else?" to "It's a bar", to "We definitely need to come hang here one night." The location at 6th and Lavaca takes it just beyond the crowds that might be walking down 6th, so you have to know where to look for it. Give it a whirl, grab a drink, you can't lose. It's next door to the Belmont and the staff is more than happy to run and grab you an appetizer if you're hanging out at District with your friends. I'm excited to see what kind of promotions they have in store. Let's all keep an eye on this one.

Went here with 3 of my friends after the Townhouse event. Not only did they have a happy hour at 10 pm Thursday night, but it included $3 mimosas, champagne, and calls. I did not expect to get 4 Maker's Mark for $12. Sweet. Then, one of my friends pointed out the table full of dildos and other sex toys set up near the back of the bar. What? Turns out there was some kind of trunk show which included sex toys, skin care, and manicures. Weird, but fun. So we got our hands massaged/exfoliated and I bought a heart-shaped heat pad for massages. Awesome ending to Thursday night.

I refuse to ever step foot in this venue again. I came out to this place on Halloween weekend to see a show. I arrived a few hours early before the headliners were scheduled to go on, and I began to notice that the venue was cutting every opening act's set short. They're openers though, I thought, I was sure they were just trying to make sure they let the headliners start on time. Then the headliners began their set, and the venue cut them short as well after only 4 or 5 songs, and then kicked them out of the venue entirely! Not only that, but the venue had no other live band or DJ to perform after that, they just played some crappy club music over the speaker system. Seriously, whoever runs this venue and handles their bands and DJs is a complete ass-hat. And $5 Red Bulls? That's the highest I've paid for a Red Bull anywhere in Austin.

I love this place! The copper bar and lighting is beautiful. The bartenders are nice and the drink specials are even nicer. This is my new hangout. :-)
