Hidden Gem Happen to come here for Museum Day. Never heard of it and it's wasn't on my radar. What a nice little surprise. It's a quaint museum with only two exhibits. One on American Slavery and the other on a rotating schedule. Riley Holloway's What I Carry exhibits was currently being displayed. Surprisingly there's no George Washington Carver exhibit outside of the children's room. You'll spend 20 minutes tops here. If you are in the area and have time to kill stop in by. It's also free! 8/10 Paintings

Free street parking and free admission, they only request you sign in. I was the first visitor today around 2pm or possibly the first one to sign in. Bathrooms are clean and the volunteers are friendly and they greeted me when I walked in. I viewed two thought provoking exhibits today. I enjoyed my time here admiring the art and learning a little history.

In East Austin, former Negro District, stands the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Complex. Black Austinites petitioned the city to relocate the library to the segregated neighborhood and rename it for the African American Agricultural Scientist and Inventor. So you will find only his bust and letter, and a small section to honor him in a room. The remaining 36,000 sq ft museum, library, park grounds, auditorium are dedicated to showcasing African American culture, preserving history, and aesthetic expression. Admission and parking are free. Nearby is the delicious Hoover's Cooking restaurant, southern cuisine and Dr Charles E Curry mosaic plaza.

I can't believe we live around the corner. Not even. I can see it from my window. A one-minute walk to such an important museum. So much history and culture in one building. An educational must for all!

My family and I love this museum and we can't sing its praises enough!! They offer programs and events for all ages that are so very well done. I have brought my littles here for kids day events and my oldest for Historically Black College and University day. They do a great job of celebrating and honoring Black history and culture all year long, while bringing the community together. I moved to Austin in 2016 and the George Washington Carver Museum has really brought a sense of home and belonging to my in life in my "new" city. The George Washington Carver Museum is next to the Carver Branch of the Austin Public Library and is about 10 minutes from downtown Austin. The museum itself is free and there is also free parking in the parking lot or along the streets. It's not a big place and could be done in about an hour. There was construction going on so there was half of the museum that we couldn't see. The half that we did get to see talked about slavery and freedom in Texas and then the evolution and celebration of Juneteenth in Texas. It also displayed the different African American communities in the Austin area. Also, I didn't know that George Washington Carver was also a well-known scientist. Overall it was very informational and insightful but it was a bit underwhelming and smaller than I thought. The genealogy center is next door for those who want to know about their African American genealogy. Funny story: we stopped in right when they opened and before we even opened the door someone came outside and told us that this place was not a museum but was just a place for people to look up their African American genealogy. Then there was a momentary pause and then I realized that it was implied that it would be useless for us because well... we aren't African American. We understood and walked away but that got a good laugh out of us.

Although I only spent about 30 minutes in this museum (it's not a large space), I felt like this museum did the early community of Austin much justice! Usually when we see black history, it's mostly the documentation of demoralizing abuse and crimes against mankind. However, This little museum managed to pack much more history in. Some black families that have been established here in Austin for generations are featured. And their descendants are still living in Austin, despite the lineage being ravaged several times by the KKK.

I love the GWCM&CC. Been several times for different events. It has some great local black history exhibits, a nook of inventors (including GWC), and a section with a large interactive art gallery. Outside, there is a garden, some statues, and some plaques with additional history displayed as a walkby timeline of key moments in black history in the US. There is also a nice theater they use for special programs and performances.

Great history museum about Austins Juneteenth and the Emancipation Proclamation. They do have some great info about George Washington Carver, about his contributions in the front lobby. Lots of art and displays, take the time to walk around and read. Go outside in the back and read the displays. The inside and out is well kept. A local artist had some of her work displayed to the right of the entrance. They do have some hands on for the kids, so take them. The staff is helpful if you have questions, a few flyers are up front. Very educational and worth the time, they do have a donation box. Next door is the Carver Library, I stopped to get a little more history.

Okay, so I went here with high hopes. Took my kids with me. They had some excellent exhibits by Jamel Shabazz as well as George Washington carver and other historical black figures. There's a display of shackles and the first the black firefighters in Texas who broke the color line. There was an exhibit about Anderson high school which was in service from 1955-1971 when it closed due to desegregation. I mean there's some great information. However all the exhibits were small and sparse; the children's wings is one small room and not very interactive. The museum's exterior is currently under construction. They also have a statue garden which is nice. I would really love if they build on this museum; it has the potential to be something special.
