This is a cute little place with good customers service, great prices and a variety of products to select from. They offer prepackaged snacks/food items and fresh made off the grill. They have a variety of drink items and a few office items that may come in handy. I think to keep prices low they use cheaper items and canned goods. This is not a terrible thing but it also isn't a great thing. If high quality is what you want and price is not an issue you may want to go elsewhere. However, if price is a consideration, you can eat here for a good price and have a decent meal. My favorite part about this place is the people that work here. They are funny and friendly!

For a state (employee) cafeteria; they are a very good deal. It is not just for state employees as anyone can get in. (enter on the Brazos side by the gazebo) They have a hot plate daily special or you can order burgers, chicken sandwiches, depending on availability is a $3 taco salad or club sandwich with chips. They have deli sandwiches, chef salad, ice cream bars, cookies and lots of candy and some unusual and unique food items. They also have a mini-store and sell aspirin, greeting cards, and other emergency items like umbrellas. It's not anything I would go across town for but you can't beat the price. Credit Card minimum is $3 They even have outdoor seating. If you want better, then go elsewhere and pay double.

I would give it 4 stars, but it's still cafeteria food, and there's something wrong about putting cafeteria food right next to Rudy's BBQ =) That said, the food here is tasty, warm, and will fill you up for cheaper than anything else out there (including McD's - blech). Entree and a side for $3? That's a deal! Also, they're open til 4pm, so you can get a late cup o' coffee, some healthy (just kidding) packaged snacks, or a tuna sandwich in the fridge if you're lucky. The fried okra's great, as are the tacos (breakfast as well as the hard tacos they sometimes have for lunch). The burger is very tasty, and is much fresher than McD's (blech). The staff are very cordial as well. This place has probably saved me a chunk of change this past year of working for the State of Texas, and while I've probably taken a hit on the saturated fat intake, I figure since I try to eat smaller portions here than I normally would, it all balances out. Pretty good place to eat if you're a state worker!

I appreciate your 99 cent breakfast tacos, and your fried okra is quite tasty; however, so far, everything else has been pretty poor. How do you mess up grilled cheese? How hard is it to avoid making the coffee taste like dirt? I knew I was going out on a limb by ordering a cafeteria pork chop, so that one's on me, I guess. I do have one request. Is there something you can do about ventilation? This place always smell like old bacon, and subsequently scents me with old bacon aroma. Anyway, you provide a convenient source of caffeine, fat, and carbs for the government drones (myself included). Thanks for that. UPDATE Add one star for the "Travis Cafe!" Ventilation still doesn't work well, but the fresh coat of paint and the new flat screen TV help perk the place up a bit. Recently, I tried a cheeseburger meal ($3). I was pleasantly surprised. The fries were soggy and not salted, but the burger had decent seasoning and was served fresh off the griddle. This is by no means my favorite lunch spot, but if I forget to pack a sandwich, I might get that burger again.

The credit card minimum thing is not only stupid, it is against their card holder agreement that they signed. I understand their feelings behind it and that it cuts into profits, but tough, you signed the rules, now follow it. This really just makes me want to steal plastic forks from you and horde them in my office drawer. You are still cheap and good for a quick breakfast or a somewhat passable cheap taco on Thursday.

It is the closest cafeteria to the Comptroller's Office where I work. That alone is not enough to get me to eat There. You have to walk through a gauntlet of grease that smells terrible to enter the cafe.The food quality is as poor as I have ever experienced. My high school cafeteria was even better and it was sketchy. If you have to eat there, the club sandwich is the only item I would trust.

As you approach the William B. Travis Building Cafeteria from the outside, it appears to be a cozy, quaint little spot. As with a cottage nestled in the woods, you'll travel beneath large, overhanging trees. You'll walk along the bicycle-lined pathway past a quiet, naturally-lit seating area. Entering through two sets of glass, double-doors, customers are welcomed by an ambiance and decor reminiscent of times long past. For me, it invokes a sense of nostalgia as I remember the homes of the 80's television shows I watched as a kid. The staff is warm and welcoming, yet often a little quirky. They have been kind to me on my many visits, which has always been appreciated. Kudos to management who not only employ a blind cashier (and he absolutely kills it behind the machine), but also for (as I understand it) donating a portion of the profits towards blind education locally. I can't imagine profits are substantial, however. The prices are so incredibly low, you'll be confused and dumbfounded as to how they continue to operate. After ordering, you'll be pleased by the over sized portions and incredible value you'll believe you've discovered. Unfortunately, the food is pretty bad. Not terrible, but pretty bad. It's akin to that feeling after eating your guilty-pleasure fast food. (For me, it's Taco Bell) You know the feeling. It's how you'll enjoy it while you're eating but then immediately regret it afterwards. It's like that except without the first enjoyment part. It doesn't taste great while you're consuming it, and then afterwards, you'll be a bit nervous about the general state of your health.

I only go here when I need a quick fix for a liter of water or gatorade (and I am too lazy to drive to the 7 Eleven). Alas, this is one of the closest state cafeterias that takes a credit card. Jill's review is on the nail. The old bacon smell is on my coat.
