They get three stars bc of the great staff. I usually try to avoid Avis/Budget based on past experiences, but unfortunately, our flight arrived late and they were the only rental company open at 1am. I reserved an intermediate, gas-powered vehicle. Well, they said it would be an EV OR I could pay an additional fee to upgrade. My biggest issue is don't leave me with no options bc you ran out of vehicles. This had to be the most stressful two days of my life bc in Houston there aren't many EV charging stations except for the ones in an apartment complex for their residents or at the car dealerships. I eventually found one at a grocery store that I had to sit in for 2hrs to get enough charge to return to the rental facility. But despite the long line and irritated travelers, the staff were amazing.

Fuck this place. I rented a car and all they had was an EV. Sure whatever, I had to took what I could. I read the reviews and saw they were charging people cleaning fees for dumb things so I made sure the car was in tip top shape. Not a scratch on the car. They email me TEN days later saying I returned the car with the largest crack in the middle of the windshield. I know for a fact there wasn't a crack in the windshield because the size of the crack they are claiming would have been a safety hazard for me to drive and I would have returned the car before I was supposed to due to this nature of damage. They damaged this rental and they are trying to pass the buck to me. Absolutely NOT. I will escalate this as far as it needs to go. If I could give 0 stars I would.

1 Gave me an EV without telling me. It can be hard to charge a rental EV on a trip, so I reserved a compact car that runs on gas. When I landed at the airport, the app offered me an EV, so I declined it and picked a Toyota BZ4X. But I did not know that this model was electric. The app did not say that it was electric, and I did not realize until I rented it! The app should always make it clear that an EV is an EV. 2 This car only has a 185-mile range, too short for Texas. I had to work somewhere 75 miles from the airport, so I used most of the range just getting to my work location and back. West of the Mississippi, 185 miles is a shopping trip :) 3 The trunk has a space for a Tesla adapter cable. Avis did not include any cables, so I could not use the numerous Tesla Superchargers. EV infrastructure is often poor with widely scattered chargers that are hard to find and often out of order or blocked by a parked car. An EV is basically useless without a Tesla adapter cable. On a business trip, I had to take time off work just to keep my car charged. 4 Lesson learned: only accept a rental vehicle that takes gas. Hybrids OK. 5 And one tire had low pressure when I picked it up. Unsafe! 6 A few days later, we rented from Enterprise at the same airport and had a great experience.

Unfortunately we had quite a negative experience renting a car from Avis at IAH. Pickup: We got in at ~1:00am, and there were 2 staff members to service all of the flights that got in at that time. And those 2 staff members seemed to be casually chatting with every customer, letting them chat on the phone while holding up the rest of the line, and overall moving at a glacial pace. 45 minutes later, we get to the front of the line. The staff member seemed very slow, only just realizing that there was a line as we pulled up. We had reserved a car online (Rav4 or similar), and they were trying to push an electric car on us (in Texas in 90° heat), which we declined, or a minivan, which we declined. They asked if I wanted to "upgrade" to an SUV, which I had already booked. Eventually they give us a car, which did not have a full gas tank. I was not about to wait another hour in that line at 2:30am, so we took a photo of the gas tank and left. Dropoff: We dropped off the car at the same gas level it was given to us, and flagged down a staff member to let them know the situation. They understood, and said they would "mark it as full." Five minutes later we get an automated email charging $70 for "fuel services." I then spend the next hour on the phone with customer service, 45 minutes on various different holds, for them to tell me that I didn't return it full, which was incredibly frustrating. We're currently in the process of fighting this fee. Overall I would advise exercising caution before renting from this Avis, as it felt like they tried to make it as difficult and cumbersome as possible at every step.

Avis at the Houston airport is awful. I come 1-2 times per month for work and have been extremely loyal to their brand. Every single time there is a line of 20+ people at both the preferred and normal counters because they are out of cars. One time is a coincidence, this is going on 5-6 times in a row. They try to blame it on "concerts" but one of their staff members told me it is a department staffing issue with their cleaning. Book your rental car with another company.

Representative at the desk was on FaceTime at 6am and proceeded to waste 1.5HRS of my time claiming she couldn't help us. Come to find out she just didn't want to do her job and was turning people away she shouldn't be. Unacceptable and ridiculous, if you can't clock in at 6am don't clock in at 6am. How do you get a line backed up like this at this hour? Everyone in this line deserves compensation.

DO NOT USE AVIS PERIOD!!!! On February 26, 2025, I reserved a full-size, four-door truck a week in advance to ensure availability for my vacation. However, when I arrived on the morning of Friday, March 7, 2025, to pick up the vehicle, I was informed that none were available. The representative spent 45 to 50 minutes trying to locate one, and when she did, it was a plain white Dodge without step ramps. This made entering the vehicle difficult, especially for my nine-year-old daughter. Before leaving the parking lot, multiple warning sensors appeared, including an oil change notification, a brake light warning, and a windshield wiper fluid alert. Upon inspection, I found that the third brake light on the cab was not working. Additionally, the truck was dirty and in need of a wash, but since it was the only option, I had no choice but to take it. A Toyota Tacoma was offered as an alternative, but it was not a full-size truck and would have been uncomfortable for a 13-hour drive. As a Preferred Customer, I expected a far better experience. Despite reserving a week in advance, my family and I spent nearly two hours securing a suitable vehicle. This delay and the poor condition of the truck made me feel as though I had let my family down. No one wants to disappoint their child, and unfortunately, our week-long vacation to Atlanta started on a terrible note due to this rental experience. To make matters worse, I paid $1,191.33 for a vehicle that was not only poorly maintained but also missing a front license plate and had an expired rear plate (November 2024). Additionally, the fuel tank was not full at pickup, and when I reported this, I was simply told to take a picture and inform the attendant upon return. Even after returning the vehicle a day early before 12 noon, I was still charged for the extra day. I also couldn't help but notice that every other full-size, four-door truck in your lot had step bars, making me question why I wasn't given the same level of service. Resolution Request: Given the multiple issues with my rental--lack of availability despite a prior reservation, vehicle maintenance concerns, safety violations, and incorrect billing--I request a partial refund to compensate for the inconvenience and additional charges. I also ask that my Preferred Customer status be considered in resolving this issue to restore my confidence in Avis. Avis response a $124.61 refund based on subtracting the $37 for one day and $86 more dollars. When I informed them that was unacceptable, should be at least $595.00, I promptly received a response saying sorry we have already credited you $124.61 and there is nothing else we can do. However, we have sent you a free upgrade voucher. Based on my experience and the other reviews posted Avis should close down and leave the rental car business alone. Obviously they don't care about providing customer service or resolving issues they create. I wouldn't use this company again if it was the only company in town. Eric Wilkins

I rent 30+ cars a year from Avis and this is the worst location in the company. My last 6 rentals have been from this location - the vehicles have had an average of 50,000 miles on them. I had a Charger in December with over 75k (a personal record). Beyond the high mileage, the cars here are just in poor condition overall and operations seem to lack. Steering wheels are sticky, half eaten food in center console, no gas in tank despite showing as full when checked out, cars not getting checked in at drop off, no charger in EVs, underbody splash shield falling off, etc. Picked up a car a few Sundays ago and the porters were taking vehicles directly from the return area to the lot for customer pickup. Giving two stars instead of one because that week the car I picked up had no gas and I was charged $75 when I returned it empty... when I went to the desk to get it fixed the associate refunded me without question and said "Yeah I'm not shocked it was empty last Sunday was crazy!" I have literally had a negative experience here with every single rental. I am considering status matching and changing to a different company.

A line of people waiting to rent and the 2 workers are resting their hands against their cheeks, talking to each other and not a care in the world. efficiency? work ethic? customer service? What has happened to these companies? Now both employees have disappeared and the line grows.
