When was the last time you rode the METRO? Hop on board! If you need to get a Metro Fare Card this is one of the main locations to do so. The service is quick, easy and the location is very secure. The only issue you might have is finding a parking spot nearby. I know Houston is not very public transportation friendly but every little bit helps with the traffic congestion. The best part I have found so far is the ability to travel with my mountain bike to the parks downtown and surrounding areas.

Located at the North End of downtown, one can catch the North/South Red line of the Houston Light Rail system at this stop. It is very close to the large Bus Transit center, and was our way to connect from the bus that took us from IAH airport to the Red Line, which took us to Rice University. The cost is minimal ($1.25 for unlimited rides for 3 hours), and you can buy tickets right on your smart phone. On a Saturday afternoon, the red line trains were running every 15 minutes or so. Also something to notice: there are different platforms for trains going south vs trains going north, so need to pay attention to be on the right platform (they are not connected). In our case, we needed to go South so the southern most platform was the right one to be on.

A lot of buses connect in Houston in this transit center, so if you ride public transport you'll inevitably end up in downtown transit center at some point. It's in a central downtown location, and next to the metro store where you can buy your metro q-card (an easier way to pay for buses/rail by just tapping your card). Since parking is expensive in many downtown locations public transport is definitely a cheaper option. I commute through this station frequently. It can get a little dirty and a little sketchy especially at night, so just be cognizant of your surroundings. I think recently metro has been trying to keep the stations cleaner and safer (with metro police hanging out around the station) so there are some improvements.

I visited the RIDE store recently to get a METRO Q Card. The process was fast and easy but make sure to bring your drivers license if you are getting a Q Card. The woman helping me was wonderful and very friendly. My one issue was the parking situation, if you plan to drive and park to visit the ride store, allow extra time because the lot they have is 7$ to park, and when I went to the machine, it didn't work. So I ended up parallel parking one block over. Now I haven't visited the transit center yet, but it looked clean and nice when I walked by.
