We came for dinner on a Saturday at 7 p.m., and it was already pretty full. They're a small hole-in-the-wall spot with just a few tables--three big round ones and four small ones. The menu is thick with tons of pictures, and the staff--likely the owners--were super helpful and knowledgeable about every dish. We ordered 5 dishes, and the food came out pretty quickly at first, but then a few large parties arrived, which tanked the service quality. We basically didn't get 2 of our dishes until we were done eating. We ended up taking it to go. They could really use an extra server during peak hours. That said, the food was excellent and had huge portions. Chive and Pig Blood (韭菜猪血) - this was my favorite--the pork blood tasted great and was well-prepped. Fried Pork Liver Slices (溜肝尖) - meat was tender and flavorful. Seasoned Pork with Handmade Pancake (熏肉大饼) - The flatbread was super crunchy and flaky. The meat was good. Housemade Haerin Sausage (哈尔滨红肠) - it was simple but good--it would've been even better with the flatbread if it had come out on time. Dace with Black Bean Sauce and Lettuce (豆豉鲮鱼油麦菜) - tasted great as leftovers the next day.

TL;DR: This is my favorite find of 2025 so far. My friend brought takeout for Lunar New Year from Lucky Bento, and I was amazed that we had such a good Dongbei* restaurant in Houston. I was at the restaurant one week later. And I revisited the following week as well. *Dongbei literally means eastnorth, or northeast, obviously referring to the part of China (Shandong and other colder provinces). This restaurant had some popular Sichuan dishes though, so it's not all Dongbei. I also don't think I saw potato slices, which is a Dongbei classic, but I might just have missed it. By the way, a lot of people have mentioned getting charged for rice. As someone else mentioned, the norther part of China (everything above the Yellow River) grows wheat and eats noodles, and everywhere south of it grows rice. Found it pretty hilarious to see someone say that's why this Dongbei restaurant would charge for rice... hi, we are still in Houston, where rice is abundant and cheap. When I dined in, they gave each person a large bowl of rice without charging. Not sure whether they would've charged had we asked for refills. On the note of service: The lady is super nice and sweet. The guy with dyed hair, not so much. I wished he would refill our water. We asked three times on the last visit as the only people in the restaurant and gave up. Other people have been fine. Anyway, after having eaten 11 dishes from here three times in two weeks, here are the items I had in order of likelihood of ordering (there are some I shouldn't eat as often even if the dish itself tastes good): - Guobaorou, or sweet and sour pork: 6/5! This is the best rendition of guobaorou I've had outside China. It's not your average sweet and sour pork (tangcurou) because it comes in whole pieces as opposed to strips and is extra crispy. It is very strong on the vinegar smell but you don't really taste it as it is sweet; fyi, vinegar helps reduce glucose spikes so maybe that dulls the diabetic blow? It's still probably one of the least healthy dishes here but I still eat it knowing that. So good. - Roasted tendon: 5/5. If you like tendon, you'll not find a better dish. If you're not sure but you like like chewy, gelatinous textures, you likely will like this. Tendon in pho is bland, but this has great flavors and a mix of textures from crunchy bamboo shoots and crunchier bell peppers. - Pork ribs with long/wide green beans: 4.5/5. Honestly, this tastes healthier than it probably is. Love the high heat wok flavors in this dish. It tastes even better as leftovers because the sauce seeps into the beans. - Dongporou, or braised pork (belly): 4.5/5. This is the best preparation of dongpourou I've seen outside China so for that, I'd give it 5/5. It's just that pork belly is not my favorite cut just because it's so fatty, hence the deduction. ... but it's still really good. - Basidigua, or candied sweet potatoes: 4.5/5. Again, half point deducted only because I really shouldn't eat these, but they're done perfectly and taste really good. They fry sweet potatoes, then coat them in sugar syrup. It comes out piping hot, and it's done perfectly. Get this after all dishes have been served so that you can eat it as dessert. - Dumplings: 4/5. I'm really picky when it comes to dumplings, but these were good. Good dough/texture with shrimp, chives, and some other meat (forget whether it was beef or pork). I wish they would've served this with ginger threads. - Kung pao chicken: Always a crowd pleaser. I'd give it a 3.5-4. - Liangpi, or cold noodles with cucumber and peanut sauce: 3-3.5. I normally love this dish but this one had way too much garlic. It calmed down a bit after a day so the flavor was better as leftovers, but the noodle had hardened by then. Not sure I'd get this particular dish here again. - Pork belly with sauerkraut soup: I love pickled veggies and wanted to love this dish but it had such strong pork smells that I initially gave it a 2/5. But it tasted a lot better as leftovers after the soup seeped into the meat more. I'm torn. Final rating is probably 3.5/5. I might try it again, but I'd really have to be in the mood for it because this place has so many other dishes (see above) that I'd get before getting this. - Huoshao, or Crisp Beef Pancakes, or what another Yelper referred to as meat pastries: 3.5/5. These are pan fried and both crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. They are done really well, but I rate this lower because I'm just not a huge fan of this type of food (greasy on the outside with fatty ground beef on the inside). If you like huoshao, you'd love these. - The eggplant without meat: It was okay, not memorable. I plan on trying yuxiang eggplant here next, probably for lunch at $11/dish. Suffice it to say this place is now a house favorite and has made it to my Houston's Best list. We'll re-visit again and again!

Food is good and in large portions. However, they could improve their quality by going easy with the salt. Everything needs to decrease salt content by a half. Don't order the boiled fish: it was stale and tasted muddy. Do order the candied yam and sweet and sour pork ribs. Seems like a locals place. Bring your own seafood and they will cook it for you.

I came to check out Lucky Bento V.I.P. Cuisine 小沈阳 when it first opened 4 years ago. That was a completely different restaurant. My original review said the restaurant served Fuzhou Cuisine. According to a Chinese news site in 2021, a new Northeastern Chinese restaurant just opened. (https://www.dealmoon.com/guide/959837) To be precise, Shen-Yang is a city in Liaoning Province in the northeastern region of China, which is closer to Korea than to Beijing. The Shenyang Cuisine has similar dishes in Northeastern Cuisine but taste different. Due to the colder climate, the food is often served temperature hot and spicy. I ordered the traditional Malatang Pick 2. There was no English name for this dish. In Chinese, it's 水煮两样 under Delicious and Healthy part of menu. I picked Duck Blood Pudding and Tendon. The flavor was... oh my gawd, yeah. Other than picking out those toasted peppers, there were lots of meat in the bowl. A lot of reviewers complained about it charges extra for rice. Technically, rice is for southern Chinese. Northeasterners eat wheat breads and pancakes. I wanted more authentic. So, I ordered Scallion Pancake. This tasted authentic to me. Layers of goodness with crispy outside and fluffy inside while piping hot. Pancakes from this region normally don't have strong scallion flavor. Overall, this was a well-spent dinner. I got so much leftovers to serve many lunches thereafter. Oh, this place can get loud as customers happy to enjoy the food.

We had never had Chinese food from this region and were pleasantly surprised. The house specialties were good: crispy fried sweet and sour pork as well as the ribs and beans. Basic interior but cleanish. Our food came out quickly and the service was attentive.

This is a no holds bar, authentic Chinese spot. No frills, and it doesn't look like much from the outside. The interior is decently clean. We ordered a bunch of dishes and they're Northeast Chinese cuisine. All pretty good and it's decent portion size as well. Service is very minimal as per old school Chinese spots but it's reminiscent of the old fashioned style of dining out before Chinese cuisine got hipster. The sweet and sour pork is a solid dish and the the small intestine is cooked deliciously as well. The cumin lamb is another decent dish. Note: this is ridiculous but they charge you $1 per bowl of steamed rice. This is very atypical of any Chinese restaurant and also the rice is a bit soft/too much water added. Also note: we did spot a cockroach scurrying around the dining room. Nothing Michelin starred or fancy but it'll be home cooked Chinese food that will fill you up.

My top favorite authentic Chinese restaurant currently will not appear on the HC Top 100 list, and I hope they will remain a neighborhood hidden gem. The chef has superb skill, the menu offers a wide variety of regional Chinese dishes, and the value is crazy good, order three dishes and get one free. We got the Lamb Menudo Milky Soup, which I highly recommended, juicy and flaky Beef Stuffed Made-from-scratch Biscuits, Smoky Cured Meat stir-fried with Vegetables, and my perennial favorite Eggs stir-fried with Tomates as the free dish. In a huge city like Houston, I ran into 2 families I know at lunchtime, what are the odds of that? I look forward to my next visit to this oddly named restaurant with the best authentic Chinese food I can find currently. Please don't make the list because they are doing fantastic business as it is.

One of the most underrated restaurants in Chinatown! I came here for the first time on Christmas day, and then a second time a couple of weeks later with my family. You find some of the most delicious, quality and quantity food for an amazingly low price. You can tell that everything is freshly made, all of the incredible flavors are there, some of the best dishes I've had. Again, it makes it even better that they are also really low price! My family and I are huge eaters, we eat enough for a village lol. The last time we went we ordered 9 to 10 dishes for about five people, of course we had a lot to take her back home with us, but there is just such an incredible variety. We wanted to try everything. All of the meats were super juicy, everything was just so fresh in the flavors are there. Pretty immaculate. Apologies for some of the half eaten food pictures, I just couldn't wait to dig in I tried to take them at a better angle- whether or not I was successful... I may have read some earlier reviews of the place, not being as good, but I feel that they might have done something differently within the last couple of months of ownership, because again, this is a really great place to eat, and you have to come check it out at least once. We had incredible service, you have people constantly checking up on you, it gives a really good family feel, they have even asked us if things have tasted good each time I was here, you can tell it's not just transactional. Ambience is pretty great, they have a couple of different seating options. When you go in, there is a little bit of a limit to seating, since it's a little bit of a smaller place, totally worth coming in to. This place has quickly and easily become one of my favorite spots in Chinatown, again super underrated, so you have to come check it out!
