World class museum in the heart of Houston's museum district. I hadn't been back for a while and there is garage parking and some street parking available. I saw two special exhibits today impressionist and a light exhibit. How about some Renoir, Degas, and Van Gogh? Staff are kind and helpful, I had bought a family membership and I was refunded the tickets for the special exhibit today. It is a lot of walking between building so bring comfortable shoes. Highly recommended!

I went here for the Opening Day Lecture on Stokely Carmichael, leader of the Black Panther Party! Dr. James Jones III did an excellent job and there was a chance for questions and answers afterwards! The museum had many pieces of memorabilia inside!! It's a very nice museum. 5500 Main St. Houston, Texas

I love the film department of MFAH! They have something for everyone throughout the year, very diverse and always interesting. My favorite time to visit is when the shorts film festival is taking place here, February. I recommend buying your tickets online ahead of time, and get there early because many films sell out here. The seats are a little narrow, so if you like to spread out or need your personal space, sit in the top rows where there are individual chairs as opposed to attached row seats that share armrests. I once had a scheduling issue and was prepared to give away my tickets to a friend because I couldn't make it amd ink found out a few hours before the film started. I called the film dept. And they were so helpful and switched my tickets to a later date and they were so kind to do it all for me over the phone and leave my new tickets in an envelope at guest services. Wonderful, excellent, super duper service. I recommend signing up for their emails to keep up with their films. One last thing, the free parking lot that was once across the street is no longer available. So parking is now $17 to park in the museum's parking garage. So that's another reason to get there early to find street parking, or take the light rail.

They screen documentaries, independent and classic films, and even have kid and family oriented movies. The prices are variable, I have yet to find a pattern so I apologize, but they seem to stay in the range $6 - $10 a ticket. They do give a $2 discount for students and seniors. The family movies are either free with museum admission or completely free. You also get discounts if you're a MFAH member or there is also the Film Buffs Membership, which sadly is out of my price range. The Brown Auditorium in which MFAH Films operates is located on the bottom level of Caroline Wiess Law Building across of the Cullen Sculpture Garden and the furthest building from the parking garage. The ticket booth for the films is also on the bottom level, so you can head straight there. You can purchase tickets online through MFAH's website. What is neat about it is that it shows you how many tickets are left, so you will know if you need to purchase them now or if it's safe to wait and purchase them at the door. Don't expect to munch while you're here, unfortunately it's not that kind of theater. The films I have seen so far have been very interesting and I felt accomplished for experiencing something with more culture than the next summer blockbuster. The staff is very friendly, talkative and knowledgeable about the films. So you can have an intellectual conversation and learn more about the film if you wish. The seating is comfortable, the row in front of you is down by your knees. So even if you are a child the person in front of you is not going to block your view. So the Angelika had me spoiled and in a routine. With it's closing I was sad but it forced me to search of other options. I'm almost embarrassed to say I've lived within walking distance of the Fine Arts Museum and had taken so long to see a film screening here. This has now become a resting place for movies that surely would have played at the Angelika but didn't get picked up by River Oaks three screens. If you feel like something is missing from your life like I was after the loss of the Angelika this is a great option to get that experience back.

This was my first time attending an MFAh Film event. It was a bit odd since it was on a Monday. The museum is closed on a Monday, so my hope of eating at Cafe Express dissolved. I had printed out my ticket online and was happy to arrive as they opened the doors for the 7pm showing of Rushmore at 6:30pm. I'm so glad I was able to snag a seat of preference before the movie began. There was quite a crowd!! People were seated on the staircase! They did a great job of playing a 35mm film on a big screen. It was also perfectly time, not too late for a Monday night. I had a great time and was comfortable throughout the film. I hope to return the next time a film catches my eye. I continue to love the MFAh - such a gem in Houston.

I didn't know this existed, but they have a nice selection of movies that you wouldn't get to see anywhere else, ie. artsy fartsy type movies or foreign movies. I saw "Le tableau" or "The Painting" as the English version is on a Thursday (Free!). Not sure if they do this all the time, but the curator was giving a little speech at the beginning about the movie and other things they have going on. I think however that she spoke about 5 minutes too long and explaining the movie before we saw it! If that's what is done every time, she should teach a class at a community college or something because before a movie is not the right time. Think about it, people have come, sat and watched the little preview slideshows for 15 minutes already and they are ready to see the movie! 2 minutes should be tops for a pre-movie speech!

Really disappointed with the French comedy series this year. Somebody should take a course and understand the concept of comedy. Showing me an hour and a half of French rap with a bunch of foul language is not comedy; this is the kind of crap that looses membership. Waste of an evening. Good news, only showing once.
