It is disgusting & very disrespectful that greedy personal interests have managed to lobby & buy their way into taking over the PXs/BXs/Stores (& Canteens) at our veteran's hospitals. They immediately insured that, except for the grossly overpriced sodas & snack items, everything/the only options available to the United States of America's military service veterans & their family members, is "Made In China". That is a level of disrespect & uncaring which is impossible to understand, much less justify, yet the uncaring is allowed to continue to line the pockets of these greedy vendors & the legislators they have bought.

Great breakfast burritos. My 88 year old dad purposefully forgets to eat breakfast so I'll take him to the cafe! It's a busy place but the staff take good care of it - tables are wiped, garbage dumped, coffee is ready. We'll keep going back, plus my dad often offers to buy because it's very affordable.

I used to look forward to dining here, reminded me of my mess hall days. It has changed to the point, this may be my last Breakfast here. It used to be the cheapest place in town to eat, like the Commissary those days are gone. Looks like they have gone to a one size fits all on coffee less than 16 oz. No self-serving the condiments. Get from register employee which slows down check-out service. The food servers should never have to leave the serving area unattended and yet she did with customers waiting. Food wasn't made to order so not hot either through mainline.

It is really difficult to add another biz called Patriot Store. Because these establishments are operated by Veterans Canteen Service. Although it's not open to the public, it doesn't mean they don't exist. In fact, you can come here if you dare to endure the parking situation. According to their policy, these vending units are for "authorized" customers. You can be at least a visitor to VA Medical Center to patronize here. Of course, they serve people who work here or being a patient here. So, this review contains 2 parts: Patriot Cafe and Patriot Store. They have same operating hours. They all have same goal - servicing medical staff, veterans and their families. PATRIOT CAFE This is a typical cafeteria. Like it or not, everyone eats here at lunch time. Extremely busy, yes. They have daily specials. Look for the menu posted at the door. However, I never see them served on the line. Otherwise, you get to choose from the usual food like fried chicken, fried fish, fries, burgers, sandwiches, salads, soups and stuff at the main dining hall. Breakfast is served until 10. Lunch ends at around 2. After that, self-service vending machines open all day. Microwave ovens are available to use. I just don't understand why serve greasy and salty food to healthy people. I usually go to Pizza by the Slice across from here, if I'm hungry. If I can hold my hunger long enough, I take my appetite elsewhere. Another thing. Quit complaining about their customer service. You are in Houston, not Las Vegas. PATRIOT STORE This is my must-go place when I come to Michael E Debakey VA Medical Center. It is like a mini Military Exchange - all proceeds go to benefit veteran's programs. That's why I always buy something here doesn't matter how little I spent. They also have online store for bigger items like tires, refrigerators, mattress and stuff. They have monthly specials like a department store. I hope you enjoy reading my review. The Patriot Cafe is Disgusting! Many years ago the food was much better. The subs are stale bread with spoiled black olives. The hamburgers precooked (Boiled?) was luke-warm on cold pre-toasted buns and the french fries hardly warm. The food offering is greasy fried chicken and over-cooked vegetables. All is over-priced. A few blocks away in the Houston Medical Center, all those hospitals have great cafeterias. As for the Patriot Store, an item purchased for $30 proved to be junk and was brought back the next day, unused and in original condition. The store refused a refund. Even with tax, I found that most items could be found elsewhere at less cost.

Always a fascinating way to start the day, eating with heroes when we go to the VA. Food is decent, people are pleasant and those eating or hanging around are a treasure of history. Amazing what people have been through. It is a heavy traffic area but is kept clean almost always.
