My personal preference for bars vs clubs has no impact on this review. As I've said before, I'm not the type of person to go to a strip club and complain about naked chics, alright? So here's my take on Red Room from the eyes and ears of the long-gone club bunny inside of me... Red Room is located right down the way from More Than You Can Imagine, in a residential area where a pack of Bentleys, Ferraris, Lamborghinis line the streetside for all the commoners to drool over. Door guy was never an issue both times I've visited here (for a Christmas after-party and birthday), but it was 1am with no crowd hovering over the velvet rope, so perhaps that was the case. The venue is split into three sections with three completely different vibes. On the patio you'll find your typical smokers and groups of people-watchers keeping tabs on every person that walks through the gate. Upstairs, oh God. Upstairs is packed. It's a free for all. From the bar to the private tables where folks are poppin' bottles in celebration of yet another day to party, there's not an empty seat or room to stand in the house. And a tiny dance floor with spinning laser lights keeps the party people dancing -- or in my case, haul ass downstairs to the quiet, dark cave of a lounge. In all seriousness, I could hangout here all night. As I did with my companion, just chatting, snapping photos, and talking furniture and upholstery. (As a matter of fact, the various prints and textures gave me great design ideas.) Service was attentive down here, as two well-spoken managers stopped by to see if we needed anything. I normally don't hold it against a business when it comes to their patrons ... until it affects my experience. I must warn that this is the kind of place where no matter how upscale the club/lounge people say it is, patrons here can't buy class or manners. Expect stare downs from the ladies followed by noses turned upward ... and the fellas? Even worse. Don't expect them to say "excuse me" should they shove you over. Really, this is a recurring theme. Think trashy snobbery at its finest. What a bunch of dorks. Fortunately, this is the only establishment where I've seen such behavior, so as long as these folks stick with their kin and inhabit one spot, I'm fine with that.

I'd come here on a Tuesday or Wednesday but never on the weekends. If you like waiting in lines, having your name on a guest list, buying bottle service or things like that, this is your place. If you like to relax, have a drink and enjoy the company of your friends without the hassles of getting in, go somewhere else. It's a nice venue and it's in a great location. But avoid the weekend troubles if it's not your thing.

"I'm sorry, but we theres no way you can get in without a reservation on a Friday or Saturday." The door manager turned away four lovely women (of color) as we barely squeezed through the door. The unprofessional doorman lets us know that "When you get up there, let your group know that they are going waaaaaay over their max." Um, that's not my job, asshole. We headed up to the half empty lounge and ordered drinks from dorky bartenders who actually were dancing along to the top 40 music spewing from the mediocre sound system. Someone with no restrain decided that it would be a good idea to throw up tacky carpet, ugly paintings and cheap overstuffed couches and call it interior design. We spotted two middle aged guys lounging on the faux Victorian setees in the back, downing Grey Goose. They were being entertained by a pair of "high class" sex workers clad in polyester animal prints that lazily gyrated their hips to the unimpressive line up of pop songs. After a couple of drinks, we decided no amount of alcohol could transport us to the Meatpacking District and we scooted out promptly.

What a waste of time! Red Room is by far, the worst place to go on a Saturday night in Houston. "Dan Green" lets half your party in, waits for them to buy some bottles, then turns the other half of the party away. He claims he is the manager, the place is full, etc. None of which is true. Did I mention the members of the party that are denied entrance are Asian, Latino, or some other non-white race? Do yourself a favor and stay away and do not support an establishment that is openly turning away people based on their race.

Pros: - Nice decor and ambiance - DJ was doing a good job; good music and acoustics as well - Good upstairs section - Downstairs is good if you want somewhat quiet place to talk and enjoy your drinks. Cons: - Similar display of 'in the trend' absurd reasoning at the door. - 'You're not on the list' is used to remind people that they've committed a crime by not registering themselves for the list. However, web-site doesn't mention any door policy, nor was there any form to get on the list. If someone answers the phone, then you can ask to get on the list, but it is not very often that someone answers the phone. - The voice mail says 'come check us out' - only to listen to the silly talks at the door.

(-) Red Room. Not my cup of tea. I'm just used to places that are friendly and welcoming. I felt uncomfortable. Don't get me wrong, the lounge was the best thing about the place but overall, I wouldn't come back with friends. (-) Door guy is was being a door guy.. Mc Ass-Hole. But unfortunately, it's his job to be one. He actually said, "they pay me to have a heart this little!" It just sucks when you arrive with the birthday girl and door man won't let us in "without a reservation." We had to lose 2 guys in order to get in. (-) DJ wasn't that great. He had some good song choices but transitioning into it was a disaster. (-) It gets really hot upstairs for dancing. Dance to your jam and get some fresh air outside/lounge. + Gorgeous waitresses!! My friends and I were like ga-damn!! lol. I had to answer for a friend because he was lost out of words to say when she came by to check on us :)

I was not impressed with this place, but in their defense, they are renovating and utilizing the brownstone antique shop in the meantime. I felt like I was standing in my grandmother's parlor with all the antique furniture and art. The vibe was terriBAD. Maybe it's just not my type of crowd, but we found everyone to be quite unfriendly, materialistic and uncomfortable. The staff was just okay--I felt they had a detached, unsocial presence that was very unbecoming. The patio had a couple of table sets supplied with heaters. I think they were attempting a garden ambiance, but it felt very cold and unwelcoming. We stayed for an hour in hopes that it would improve, but the same situation amassed instead. I highly doubt I will return on my own since there are ample places in Houston with a pleasant vibe, in the least. Well, maybe I will come back after the renovations are complete, but only to give it a second chance. I highly doubt expanding the place will replace the dreadful people.

Oh Yeah! Not the kool aid man...but the same color red! The got the name right with this place. Red everywhere, but in a tastefully plush way. When I visited the Red Room on my first night, a Friday, at 6:30...I loved it! A cool, upscale lounge vibe with great decor and service. But, I visited tonight and there were two "private parties" with no one there...the doorman wasn't letting anyone in and two girls were crying that they had "reservations" with the manager. We'll see how this ends up but right now, this is my go to place for a martini after work.

I can corroborate Susanna and Marcus' reviews, I was there. Rude, unprofessional door staff and horrible valet with zero customer service. Places like this don't deserve my business.

I found it extremely difficult to get into the Red Room. On my first visit, I was told the place was full, despite having got to the doorman before 10PM. On the second visit I was invited by a "celebrity" and finally made my way in. I was about to be turned away with the usual "it's full" reply from the doorman before I name dropped and gained entry only to find the place half empty. I guess that's the charm of the place. There is no real line outside and they do a good job of keeping the club just full enough to not seem overcrowded. However, the real gem about the Red Room is the decor. Having been designed by a famous interior designer, whose name escapes me, the Red Room provides great ambiance to enjoy a relaxing night out. The music is not blaring and the drinks are very reasonable. If you are lucky enough to get past the doorman, then go buy a lottery ticket and enjoy a great evening at the Red Room!!!
