Worldfest is a 9 day international independent film festival held at AMC Studio 30 Dunvale Theaters in Houston every April (oldest in the world; founded in August 1961), usually on beautiful days where people go do things outdoors instead. _OO_ |___ K /\ / \ Dolores Fuller: "You people are insane! You're wasting your lives making sh*t! Nobody cares! These movies are terrible!" ----Festival is back in 2014 with most movies you've never heard of. It is the kind of festival a movie by Ed Wood would have played. Hence, quotes from the "Ed Wood" movie set up each point of my review of last year's event. Although the crowds in 2013 were not packing the theatres, I hope they keep WFF going. I did not have the time like the true movie aficionados to see a lot of these movies. I only saw 3 (one short, two full length).---- Edward D. Wood, Jr.: "I met Bela Lugosi." Dolores Fuller: "Why, I thought he was dead." Edward D. Wood, Jr.: "No, he's very much alive. Well, sort of." ---- Chairman and Founding Director Hunter Todd was accused of Muslim profiling in 2013 (see http://houston.culturemap.com/news/entertainment/04-23-13-worldfest-head-accused-of-racial-profiling-a-muslim-dismisses-it-as-a-pc-tempest-claims-fbi-agent-backs-him/ ), but apparently all is well again.---- Criswell: "Eddie, we're in show biz. It's all about razzle-dazzle. Appearances. If you look good, and you talk well, people will swallow anything." ----Houston is not Hollywood, of course. But, we have film aficionados, some filmmakers, and critics. And money. So, combine them and we can have our own film festival, complete with awards. Plus, if you make a movie, you can enter it.---- [Bela Lugosi casts a love spell on Vampira who is on TV while moving his fingers like Dracula] Edward D. Wood, Jr.: "My Gosh, Bela, how do you do that?" Bela Lugosi: "You must be double-jointed. And you must be Hungarian." ----No film festival is worth anything without European films, and this festival offered a few.--- Edward D. Wood, Jr.: "Is there a script?" Georgie Weiss: "No. But, there's a poster." ----Some of the short films are clearly low-budget by struggling filmmakers. Yet, the ones I saw have some merit.---- Edward D. Wood, Jr.: [on phone with Mr. Feldman] "Really? Worst film you ever saw? Well, my next one will be better. ... Hello? ... Hello?" ----The full length movies did not make big box office. Of course, who pays to see short films, except at film festivals? Nevertheless, the event managers picked a variety of good, not necessarily great, films, IMO. Many of the Directors of the short and full-length movies were present to answer some questions.---- Dolores Fuller: [arriving for her scenes in "Bride of the Monster"] "Well, I see the usual cast of misfits and dope addicts are here." ----Judging by their attire, the crowd in the theatre is full of obsessive film fans. But there are the retired folks as well (who else has the time and money to attend during the weekday hours?). The crowd looked like a mix of Westheimer Arts Festival and Luby's.---- Edward D. Wood, Jr.: "We don't have a permit. Run!" ----Once you get past the main entry, your ticket is good for any of the four theatres no matter what is playing. So, if you get bored, you can switch.---- Vampira: "You're watching our Halloween movie, "White Zombie", starring Bela Lugosi, John Harron, Madge Bellamy, and a bunch of other people I've never heard of." ----This is not where you see popular movies or movie stars. The only one that I recall is Eric Roberts. Well, I did get to see "First Dog" live in the theatre (the dog starred in a PG movie that was predictable, but sufficiently enjoyable).---- Old Man McCoy: "So, uh, you made the movie, and now you wanna make it again?" Edward D. Wood, Jr.: "No. We shot ten minutes of the movie, and now we're looking for completion funds." ----Sorry, but I don't have the budget to finish my review. So, instead of full-length one, this will be a short flim.----

I've tried to reach out to this film festival with a submission question, but they don't respond. I sent two emails, left a phone message, and tried contacting them through their contact form and no response. After trying to reach them over the period of a month and not being able to reach them, I decided to google the festival and boy am I glad I didn't submit. They have bad reviews all over the internet. Some filmmakers have reported negative experiences, including festival cancellations without refunds, and concerns about this festival being an "award mill," saying that this film festival event primarily exists to sell trophies to filmmakers, rather than providing a credible screening platform, industry exposure, or genuine critical assessment. Here's what others said, "This festival was almost a complete waste of time and certainly not a professionally run operation." "One would think of fun outdoors entertainment and big time celebrities- none were present. It was a complete waste of our corporate dollars."

This festival was almost a complete waste of time and certainly not a professionally run operation. I attended several films. The opening night film - Flying By (starring Billy Ray Cyrus and Heather Locklear) - was something more akin to watching on the Lifetime channel, not something that should be opening an international film festival. Laughable. Several of the international films were quite good (the French films in particular), however it was embarrassing that many of these had such small audiences. One film I attended had literally 5 people in the audience. I felt particularly sorry for the directors who attended their screenings with so few people. I mentioned this to one of the Worldfest staffers and their response was that they did not seem to care. In another screening the director was forced to do his Q&A session without a microphone. If Worldfest want to be taken as a serious film festival (and you wonder if they do, after having been in operation for 40 something years) then they need to invest much more in promoting the event and providing a bit more support for these directors, many of whom travelled from overseas to attend. And another tip - fix the Worldfest website, it is atrocious!

As a sponsor this year, I was very disappointed with the "festival" - which there was none. One would think of fun outdoors entertainment and big time celebrities- none were present. It was a complete waste of our corporate dollars. The information provided to us on attendance and demographics was untrue. The person in charge of this organization didn't event take time to greet me/us at the event and see how things were going. I would NOT endorse this festival. A huge warning to those in the future that may want to consider being a sponsor-- don't do it.
