In the words of artist-curator-critic Dave Hickey, the process and value of art is in the faster than lightspeed interaction of artists responding to culture. The more artists in close proximity, the richer the interaction. This Seattle living space is home to friends, many, many artists in close proximity and they have open houses for their art sometimes. Unlike the usual minimal, cold and dank warehouses, the TK lofts are clean and bright. All the better for keeping hundreds of resident artists perky and productive. Keep an eye out on their website for open houses!

This place is absolutely gorgeous. A good friend of mine recently was accepted here and I stopped by to check it out one day. I was thrilled for her because the space is clean and airy. I was also green with a little jealousy because I missed my loft space back in Texas! The artists are encouraged to decorate the walls outside their doors, showcasing their own art. I thought that was absolutely brilliant because the hallways are enlivened by diverse works and you're never bored walking the halls! Stop by during their open house so you can meet the artists and see their work. I highly recommend it!

We checked out the 30 30 challenge where artists created 30 paintings in 30 days. I left with an amazing piece by a lovely young puppeteer who was there to chat with me about her series. Looking forward to attending many other events here.

artists/art spaces, wondrous art, and artists aside, can we talk about that pinball machine near the entrance to the lobby leading to the artists lofts? i've gone in n out of the place for a couple years while participating in Pioneer Square's Art Walk and just noticed after coming away from seeing the 30 Day Art Challenge show that it's been sitting in the corner there, quietly playing down its showy lineage. someone had thoughtfully left on the pinball machine written instructions on how to play the bowling ball themed game for Free on a little piece of paper. an affinity for games & a childhood spent with a mother who would stop at every "FREE" sign saw this pinball machine as an imperative duty. "Yup, i'm playing you." pinball machines generally light up desire, train dexterity/mind-eye-hand coordination/calculative ability and burst with a kind of synthetic fireworks display seen on the Vegas strip, all while in rapid passing. i felt none of this when i played this pinball machine. i've never seen a pinball machine more depressed than this one. this was like the Holden Caulfield of pinball machine's. the metal ball would lazily hit a bouncer to dim lights while targets sluggishly came down each time they were hit. my two flippers acted as best friends supporting their friend in need. "we're here for you bowling pinball machine." despite the friendly flipper boost, physics would somehow sink the ball through the play field into the ramp section pit. i felt so emo. i like that this pinball machine is there; playing it reminded me that Nelson Mandela had passed away the night before, that i have a lot of things i need/want to do, and that Final Fantasy VIII's graphics are fucking amazing. ("let's go do that.") after playing the total allotments of tries for one player, i left the game a little more sober, with a finer sense for searching for more hidden treats in the sprawl that makes up the Tashiro Kaplan block.
