"Envisioning One Humanity" is the theme behind this relatively small, indie museum located in the University District of Seattle. We're not talking about massive corporate bucks or sponsors here. While much of Seattle seems to be sponsored, The Unity Museum is an individual initiative that opened up in 2012 and continues to grow even through the challenges of surviving through the pandemic. The Unity Museum offers physical and virtual tours. They are primarily interested in folks who are fully vaccinated as Seattle slowly opens up, though they will admit non-vaccinated folks with masks. Dr. Amy Colbert is the curator of the museum and Zabine Van Ness is its Executive Director. It is a non-profit guided by a well educated, informed board of directors. The museum is a subsidiary of United Hearts Networking Institute. I was fascinated by this place - I love small indie museums, though this museum is not wheelchair friendly - 1) It's upstairs in an older building and 2) The layout packs in quite a bit and there are definitely spots where even the best wheelchair user would struggle. Ultimately, for those in wheelchairs I recommend a virtual tour or arranging for an exhibit. The Unity Museum uplifts humanity by celebrating the history of human progress toward unity, social justice, and global peace. They offer rotating exhibits, presentations, and public discourse on local and global topics relevant to its themes. They also do offer outreach exhibits and presentations for the community. They have limited in-person hours, however, if you're in Seattle it's worth going out of the way to check out and support. The Unity Museum is on the bus route within the University District and it's super close to a couple hotels (including the one I stayed at, Graduate). It's also adjacent to University of Washington. While I wish accessibility was much improved, ultimately this place is super cool and I still give it an enthusiastic thumbs up.

An awesome space, a complete individual initiative by a wonderfully energetic and dynamic woman who is available for conversation, tours and sharing wisdom equally and for all. The doors of the Unity Museum opened in 2012 and this location has been serving the University District since 2014. Exhibits rotate about every three months, including topics such as history of Seattle, the importance of the role of women in society, race and race unity, the complementarity of science and religion, and much, much more. Come and meet Zabine and the volunteers who keep the space warm, questions answered, coffee and homemade cookies on hand for visitors and guests. Come back for more learning and participating in activities including a monthly brunch, fireside chats and so much more. It's a lovely, cozy space with much to offer, learn and share with the community, not just university students, but students at all ages and stages. Keep an eye out for more activities, including a children's story time and classes.

This was free, hidden, quirky, and the two staff (a woman and man), were hospitable and helpful. They engaged with my 4 year old son great, offered to let him touch anything (which I politely declined, it was a kind gesture but my tornado of a child would have totally broken some of the cool quirky stuff in there, specifically the electric train... I heard those are crazy expensive). They did have a little kid corner with crafting as well. Fun little hidden excursion, thank you people who run it.

We found the museum very unique in that it shows us how far we've come as a civilization, despite the painful and tragic ordeals that we as a species have forced upon each other over the past century. From world wars and genocide to gender and racial injustice, it shows the challenging path that that we have charted for ourselves. Things what we have overcome, what we're working on today, and what we have yet to face. The exhibits highlight the events, villains, and heroes of the recent past while touching on modern problems and events faced by today's society, such as the rise of populism, war in Ukraine and the Middle East, climate change, religious intolerance, gender rights, and more. It is a grand vision in scope, meant to elicit a feeling not too dissimilar from the "overview" effect that astronauts experience when the look at the Earth from space for the first time, and realize how in reality there are no borders and we are all in this together. As such, what touched me the most is how inclusive and safe the space feels. Regardless of where you come from, what your nationality, religion, gender, or other attributes may be - you will feel welcome here. And that is really the main message, that if we set aside our prejudices and accept others for who they are, learn more about and connect with the people living not just next to us but in other corners of the world, then maybe we can avoid the terrible mistakes of the past and work together to build a better future.

I really wanted to write a good review of this place, but I left a bit peeved. It was my first time in, saw that they closed at 3pm on Google Maps, show up at 1:30pm and see 2:30 on their door...an hour is a good amount of time, so I'm fine with it. The two older ladies that greeted me were friendly and inviting, and I start perusing their displays. 2:17pm (on my cell phone, you know, the kind that is globally synced) and a guy tells me they're closed and I have to go. I apologize and tell the guy I was watching the time and hoped I had 13 minutes left, and he just replies with, "You must be looking at some other clock". I point out that it was the time on my smartphone, and the guy didn't care. I was bummed because I only had two more displays that I hadn't looked at. Then, on the way out, a couple walks up the stairs and they get led on a tour as I got kicked out. This place is ambitious, albeit a little scattered, but it has some cool displays about local history you don't find often. They seriously need to work on not pissing off what few visitors they have though. Seriously, I want places like this to succeed.

This is one of my favorite places to visit in Seattle. It offers a history of diversity and social justice movements presented in novel ways. The staff is friendly, warm, and welcoming.
