We stayed at the Astor for two nights, and ended our evening each night in the bar. It does feel like a hotel lounge, but they did have some good wines, one of which was the Louis Martini Cabernet. Both nights the bartenders were friendly, efficient and one of them even gave us some great directions on avoiding some of the road construction on our way out of town. The second night there was a wedding in the adjacent banquet room and some of the guests were coming into the lounge and being loud and dropping some f-bombs, but otherwise everything was great.

No longer open so I wouldn't try this place out. Also place is not clean no matter the historic aspect--I don't like going to restaurants that don't exist anyway

This place is odd. The hours of operation aren't clear. I guess they've dropped their mid-week hours unless you are hosting a private party. The bartenders are nice, but it doesn't seem to know whether it wants to be fancy or chill. I mean, it's a hotel bar, so there should be some allowances for casual patrons, right? Not everyone is going to be dressed to the nines. Standard selection of beers and liquor but they do make good cocktails. It's also unclear as to whether they serve food or not, are remodeling or not, will ever serve food or not, and even figuring out where you can sit is a bit confusing. The interior is dark and uses purple lights. Is it a club? A hotel bar? There's a lot of identity crisis here.

This really is separate from the Astor Hotel on the same block. You can enter the Bar & Grill from the outside or from within the hotel but it needs a review of its own. It is night and day different from the hotel and my gut feeling is that it might have different ownership. This place is scary. Not in a dive bar full of hipsters almost good kind of scary, but a children of the corn meets the swedish chef from the muppets kind of scary. We first went in here for a night cap on our first night in Milwaukee. There were quite a few people at the bar when we walked in, but soon discovered that almost all of them worked there. It's never a good sign when the best patrons are the employees. I got quite possibly the worst gin and tonic I've ever had and after giving it to me the bartender walked over to the other side of the bar and struck up a conversation with one of the employees that were drinking there and commented "Well, the tonic is completely flat, but I'm not going to open another one the late at night" We didn't even finish our drinks. Fool me once... Fool me twice and all that jazz.... Quite a few people recommended the Sunday brunch there and so we returned on our way out of town for some breakfast. Even bigger mistake. I like runny yolks on my eggs, but runny whites? I'll pass. The hotel is great, I cannot recommend the hotel enough, but skip the Astor St Bar and Grill and head to one of the many local bars for a drink.

I am not sure if the Astor Bar and Grille is open to the public or not. We were there for a Christmas party and had the entire place to ourselves. It was a very nice place for a party and the service was good. We had three items from which to choose for dinner. I had roast beef and it was pretty good. We also had a small dance floor and DJ area set up so we could dance and have a fun time. We supplied our own DJ.

You would think having the hotel fully booked for a wedding and a city festival would tip you off that you need to staff your restaurant fully for the morning, but apparently, this guy didn't get the message. Came down for breakfast the night after a wedding, We had a table of ten, and there were probably 4-5 other tables of various sizes, and one other table of 14. There were two waitresses, neither of whom seemed clear on their sections. Waitress #1 gave us some menus. #2 brought water for some people, not others. The manager brought more water for some people, then some coffee--again for some people. #2 took our order after we had been sitting for about 30 minutes. #1 later asked if anyone had taken our order. it was completely disorganized. After we ordered, it took an hour for our food. Yes, ten is a big party, but breakfast food is hardly labor-intensive. And when we got our order, it was full of errors. A plate of pancakes and bacon no one had ordered. Eggs that were hard-boiled, not poached. Waitress #2 came to the table four times to bring some syrup, forgetting each time but the last. An iced tea took three requests and 45 minutes to come to the table. At the end, when one of our party complained to the manager about the wait time, his response was, "Everyone is waiting." He refused to do anything about the bill. Terrible customer service. I feel sorry for the waitstaff that have to work for such a poor manager.

Although the Mr. lives practically next door, I have never been in here. I guess I wasn't missing too much. It wasn't until some friends from out of town stayed at the Astor that I ever even went inside. The Bar & Grille is just kinda weird and has a creepy vibe in that I'm pretty sure there are ghosts of confederate soldiers haunting the entire place. I mean, it would serve a very select purpose. Like if I was getting married and the theme of my wedding was "Civil war era grandmother tea time" then this would be the only place I would go. The staff seemed nice (both the one behind the bar and the ones scattered at the bar) but it's definitely not a place I would want to hang out regularly or grab a drink with friends after work or anything. It's kind of disappointing that time stopped here circa 1910 because it would be pretty cool with a few interior updates and still maintain it's charm.

The interior decor of the grille & bar are very pleasing but it was the 1 hour wait for the server to deliver my meal that disappointed my expectation in the customer service. The order was a simple calamari cuisine. The grille/bar manager observed that I had been waiting longer than the average time and ushered the servers & kitchen staff to take to an importance of my waiting duration. Suprisingly, when the dish was leaving the kitchen in the manager's hand to be served to me, the manager had forgotten which table had ordered the meal. He stammered around for a few moments until the cocktail waitress had to refresh his memory.
