We recently attended the Black Panther film performance and sound bites dinner at the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. The Symphony Center is a beautiful, massive space great for any event. They open up early before the performances to allow guests to grab a drink, snack, or mingle with others. There is a couple bar and snack area open to purchase items. TLDR: Sound Bites Dinner: 4/10 MSO performance and experience: 10/10 We arrived 90 minutes early for the Sound Bites dinner and were seated at our own table in a separate section of the dining area. The tables were huge for two people and I felt a little far away from my husband. Everyone was seated and a little confused on how the dinner was going to go. We snacked on some hors d'oeuvres and got our drinks before dinner was served. There were crackers, cheese, vegetables, salmon bruschetta, a salad, and vichyssoise (potato soup). Soon after, we were served our appetizer, ratatouille, which was very good. Next was beef and fries with some sauce, then a pork chop and piece of casserole to share. It was difficult to know what we were eating as they only thing we were told what it was, was the ratatouille. Also, about halfway through the dinner our waitress that we had disappeared and another person came to to serve us. We were kind of getting ready to leave, since she wasn't there, but then another person came out to give us more food. The whole experience lacked information. We weren't given a menu of what we were eating before we starting eating, we were only told what one dish was, and we weren't sure how many courses/plates of food we would be getting. It would be nice to get an email leading up, a print out, or at the very least told what we would be eating to prepare. We ended up not eating a lot of the last dish since we had filled up on the others, thinking that was it. The food was mediocre, and I was not sure how it was chosen, by what the performance is? seasonal items? It would've been cool if the chef came out and announced anything. I would've been more satisfied going to the food and beverage cart and not doing the formal dinner. It wrapped up about 5 minutes before we headed to our seats, due to the delays with the waitstaff and no one knowing if we needed to stay for another surprise plate of food. I would not do the Sound bites experience again. The performance hall is a beautiful restoration and space. The seats are comfortable and have enough space. We sat on the lower level and had a great view of the stage and move screen. I would like to try sitting up on the balcony to see all of the performers. The whole performance was great, we had a special guest appearance from Massamba Diop, playing the Senegalese talking drum that is featured in the film. The orchestra played SO well, you wouldn't know the difference. It was a fantastic experience and will love to go back to see another show!

Gosh, we love everything about the MSO. The performance hall is lovely, and I loved seeing the historic photos and hope that they will build that lower level out to be more about the history and plans for the MSO. The organization tries to bring a range of music experiences to the Milwaukee community, and I have always appreciated the season offerings. The programs are well organized, and it's so great that they provide backgrounds on composers in addition to the performers. More education in the programs is great, given how much goes into preparing them for the season. I can't wait to attend more performances in the new space!

I'm updating this review because the MSO now has their own performance hall, with new aisles that are much more accessible to older patrons. They have pretty good repertoire and guest artists. I'd recommend checking it out if you haven't been before!

I had the pleasure of winning tickets to the Secret Symphony courtesy of Yelp! What a treat it turned out to be. We arrived at the CityCenter and picked up our tickets, started off enjoying a couple beers, which were reasonably priced, and then ate some fabulous appetizers from Safe House. The theme of the night was espionage so we went around and did some spy type, Safe House hunts that were of course whimsical but nonetheless fun. The place was a bit chaotic but truly it was a one of a kind event that you could tell people put a lot into making happen. The symphony was extraordinary. We were up close and personal which was special. I don't think these kind of opportunities come along to often so we soaked it up and enjoyed. We even got to interact before the show with many of the symphony artists and they let us play some of the instruments. Good times for sure!

Yelp sponsored an elite event on Thursday, May 14th, 2015 at the symphony. The composers featured on this night were Ludwig Van Beethoven, Vivian Fung and Maurice Ravel. Now, Beethoven's my jam. Well, Mozart is my jammiest jam, but Beethoven is a close second. Für Elise, the original love song*? Yes, please, but not tonight. Tonight we were treated to selections from The Creatures of Prometheus, a piece I was not previously familiar with and Symphony No. 8 in F major, a piece I have heard a time or two before. As usual, two very beautiful pieces of music. With The Creatures of Prometheus, I felt an intensity, very much like I feel when I listen to Beethoven's 5th Symphony. The difference being that this was a more positive, uplifting, warms-your-heart intensity, versus that of the brooding and apprehensive 5th with it's sporadic moments of happiness. As I listened to TCP, I very easily pictured people and cartoon animals, a la Disney's Fantasia, frolicking to the music as I made up scenarios in my head and it was lovely. With Symphony No. 8, I could picture the various movements as pieces of a movie soundtrack; a Meg Ryan-type romantic comedy...... Vivian Fung was new to me. I had never heard of her before this night. The piece selected was her Violin Concerto. At first, I wasn't feeling it too much but, as the piece continued, I started to enjoy it more. For the most part, it sounded like a mixture of crickets and space ships. It was very progressive and what many might consider "out there". The solo violinist, Kristen Lee, was amazing and made her violin hit notes that I did not know were possible. Maurice Ravel was also new to me, but then, I don't know of many French composers other than Berlioz and Debussy. For the most part, the movements were upbeat and positive, but there were a few times when the music turned a bit somber. Later, I learned that each movement was dedicated to a friend of the composer who had died in World War 1. History lesson aside, it was very enjoyable to listen to and I think I should listen to more. Any time someone (or, as in this case, many someones) can do something better than me, they get 5 stars. As a former clarinetist, I know how much time and effort it takes to practice to the point of perfection. Job well done, symphony! *I use the word song very loosely 72/2015

I can't wait to see a performance in the new, yet historic, stage and setting. We had the pleasure of going with Yelp to the Secret Symphony at City Center. The best part of the whole event was seeing the whole MSO perform! I love movie scores and especially "West Side Story." I plan on taking my daughter to one of the Sunday Family performances of "Bugs." and recognized that one. I was disappointed at the grown adults that chose to talk throughout the whole performance. I would like to see another show at the MSO with just movie themes or perhaps a whole Star Wars performance. It was fun too to try to play the instruments. My practicing as a kid got me know where! I enjoyed talking to the musicians and hearing their story too. Food was meh and that part was kinda a chaotic mess. The Conductor was very funny and reminded me of Christoph Waltz.

Hey Milwaukee... listen up! I'm about to spit some truth atchya. We're SO lucky to have to MSO here in Brew City. So, I may be biased because I dig classical music and grew up playing the violin... but I'm no band nerd, and I'm certainly not current in my practice, so there's that. Here's the thing: classical music is awesome and generally highly underrated or just plain ignored by those unfamiliar with the genre. Like metal? You'll like classical. Like using your brain? You'll like classical. Music nerd? Love math rock or Rush or whatever? Give classical a chance. (Though, to be clear, the MSO isn't only about old dead white dudes with names like Bach and Liszt... ) Here's what the MSO brings to our community's collective table: +world class musicians (mad talent, mad discipline) +diverse programming: classical (different eras/composers/regions) as well as contemporary and Pops offerings +a commitment to community; you'll find 'em out and about, playing at Colectivos and other various events throughout the year +culture, class, and an opportunity to explore something new and have a new experience Additionally, the MSO now has a social group called Crescendo; they rock events and are all about connecting you with the symphony, so keep an eye out for their stuff on the world wide interwebz, or hit 'em up if you're even slightly interested in checking out the MSO. If you've never been, I highly suggest taking a chance on a new thing. (Here's a great analogy from the president of the MSO, paraphrased) "Think of it this way: you can set up a fan in your basement, sit on your stationary bike, play engine noises on youtube and throw on your "Bad to the Bone" 45, or you could actually ride a motorcycle." Going to see the symphony? Like riding the motorcycle.

The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra is a very talented group of musicians and we are lucky to have them here. I enjoyed the Gershwin Favorites: Porgy, Bess & More concert recently. Having seen many performances on Broadway and at Lincoln Center in NYC, I was so pleased to be able to enjoy such high caliber performing arts here in Wisconsin. The guest conductor and singers were really talented. The best part of my experience was buying a ticket on the day of the performance and sitting in the front row. For $25. That was a WIN! I grew up attending this symphony with my parents and am happy to see it's continued success.
