Shout out to both Brian and Joanna for Putting this event up on the events page. I finally made it to the 35th annual Bockbierfest. I was hesitant about going to any senior center for having a "Good time" From the look of the parking lot it was filled up and I came just in time to see the Anvil performer hammering away. The band was quite large and was jamming the hits to make you forget about how cold it was outside. So spring is here wheres the beer.. buy tickets and enjoy Sprecher beer for $9.or HB for slightly more and Lite for slightly less. Special thanks to Mike, Kelly, Gebby, Brian N Joanna for volunteering. Glad to see many familiar faces and yes they have a sheep that looked awfully scared up along the sprinkler system pipe.. I know nothing... Food- 4, sausages and desert table Amb- 4 Serv-5 Loc-5 not bad for a hart park senior center. Value- 4 lots of volunteers and good support from the community Win Win.. 23 / 2015

So, I'm German and I don't drink beer? What the hell, Nancy? Well, tonight it was ok, because I was the designated driver, and my drinks (soda) were free! Think of this festival as German Fest Light....no dachshund races and no parade (unless you count the conga line!). Food and beverages work on a ticket system: $1 and $.50 increments. Food choices included various sausages with potato salad and sauer kraut, various baked goods for desserts, large soft pretzels with cheese, nachos, landjaeger, and candy. Beverage choices were beer, beer, wine, soda, wine coolers and beer. German music was polka style, of course, and included selections such as "Roll Out the Barrel" and "Edelweiss". The main event was a (near)beer drinking contest where both a king and queen were crowned. All of the racing sausages made an appearance and walked amongst the crowd and posed for pictures. At some point, the hot dog, Polish sausage, Italian sausage and chorizo left, leaving only the bratwurst (natch!) to work the crowd. Work it, he did, as he became a prominent member of the above mentioned conga line! 6 hours of excellent food, drink, music and people watching and an awesome kick start to the upcoming festival season in our fair city.....I'm already anticipating next year! 58/2015

Apparently, 2013 is the 33rd annual Bockbierfest - WHY WAS I UNAWARE OF THIS EVENT??? Bockbierfest is a beer fest held in Hart Park in Tosa (mere steps from home) with reasonable admission ($7) - the event is a fundraiser for the cultural group Spielmannszug. Here's how it breaks down: Good: +Cheap beer - $3.50 for a cup of Hofbrau or $13 for a pitcher? Sounds great to me. +Good beer - Hofbrau Original, Maibock or Weisse. They had Miller Lite too, if you really must. +Friendly crowd - a good mix of ages from little kids to 80-year olds +Big brass band playing "Oktoberfest's Greatest Hits" +Lots of people in lederhosen and dirndls. You'd be surprised at the number of people in this city that own leather shorts. +Beer drinking contest!! (They use Sharp's but still...) The Mister was robbed of a victory by a millisecond!! Not Good: -The "ticket" system. Man, I hate tickets. -You're hosed if you don't like beer (no wine available) -They ran out of Original at like 8pm so we had to drink Maibock. Maibock gives me a headache. Overall, we had a great time - my only regret is that I missed the last 32!!

What a seriously awesome, undersold and unknown middle of the year oktoberfest. Seriously. Head over to the Hart Park Senior Center to enjoy knockwurst, sauerkraut, landjaeger and Hofbrau paired with live music and friendly faces. There is everything from a beer chugging contest (men and women) to an anvil playing professional. Food and drinks are sold on a ticket system, so have cash handy. There is wine available for those who prefer or are gluten-challenged. There is a stand for popcorn and pretzels, as well as tons of lavish german desserts. Come as you are, leave embarrassed that pictures of you dancing with the Racing Sausages are now on the internet.

Beer, Brats, and Brass Bands, oh my!! Early spring tends to be a dry spell for social events in Milwaukee. Thank God the Bock Bier Fest exists on the last Saturday in April to whet your whistle for the Milwaukee festival season. Bock bier is a strong German lager beer traditionally brewed in spring to celebrate the end of winter. Bock bier is served at Spring festivals meant to bring people out of hibernation. Never was this more appropriate than this spring! Hosted by the Milwaukee Spielmannszug Club, Bock Bier Fest is six hours of music, food, and Gemutlichkeit. Anyone who doesn't understand the meaning of that word needs to hang out with a bunch of Germans. The more the beer flows, the more new friends you will make. The more the bands play, the more you will dance. The Alte Kammeradin band has been the main band for many years now. If you have never heard them play the "German Aerobics song" you are missing out. The host group, the Milwaukee Spielmannszug, performed two sets of traditional German drum and bugle marches. I have recently joined this group, and I can't wait to start performing with them later this season. I'll be the tall, handsome, not 70 years old, snare drum player. Until I started attending this event a few years ago, I had no idea how many Milwaukeeans like to wear Trachten (traditional Bavarian-style clothing). Fortunately, my winter-white legs were no more pale than any other leaderhosen wearing attendees. The highlight of the evening is the crowing of the Bockbierfest King and Queen. This year, fellow MKE Yelp Elite Nicole H. represented by wining the women beer drinking contest with a dominate performance that would make any beer drinker proud. Sadly, yours truly did not fair as well. I might have spilled a bit. Just like the pathetic Cubs fans always say, there is always a "next year".

A very fun and popular festival that's indoors, so weather is not an issue. Live German music that really gets the crowd going. Hofbrau, Sprecher, and Miller beer. Brats, Landjaeger, pretzels, and German desserts. All served and run by friendly volunteers at reasonable prices. $8 admission for a fundraiser. No Hammerschlagen, but man did I get hammered.

This event is always a blast! It's kind of a little slice of authentic Germany. There's a huge polka band, people in leder hosen and dirndls, lots of great German beers authentic foods. Really a lot of fun.
