Sao Bento Monastery is a Benedictine Abbey in Rio de Janeiro. This is a an excellent example of Portuguese colonial architecture.  It was established in 1590.
The interior of the church is very ornate and is covered in gold leaf gilding.
We visited the Abbey on a Saturday. It was not very crowded. There are very beautiful sculptures and the site is definitely worth visiting.

I loved the whole environment around this monastery. A peaceful and hidden enclave in the middle of a busy area, it should be discovered if you are in Rio for some days.
There is a viewpoint at the back from where the harbor and the whole rooftop of the Museum of Tomorrow can be observed.

A must see! So beautiful and free to enter! There’s a glass door with elevators to make the walk up easy. Visit the bookstore-they have very cheap and beautiful souvenirs.

Worth visiting just to observe the contrast between the beautiful, peaceful and simple surroundings hosting the seminary, and the interior of the very ornate church with different styles from Mannerist and Baroque to Rococo.
